BOOK FOUR: THE KINGDOM BEYOND THE LAST GATE
Chapter 24: The Memory He Couldn't Erase
"Who are you?"
Naren's question echoed through the palace.
Riva stared at him.
For several seconds, she couldn't answer.
She had faced monsters.
Kings.
Devourers.
The End itself.
But nothing had prepared her for this.
Her own son was looking at her like she was a stranger.
Riva stepped closer.
"I'm Riva."
Naren frowned.
"Riva..."
"Yes."
"Why does that name hurt?"
Riva's heart broke.
"Because some part of you remembers."
---
Caelan stepped forward.
"Naren, look at her."
Naren looked at him.
Then suddenly...
His expression changed.
"You."
Caelan froze.
"You remember me?"
Naren's eyes narrowed.
"You killed me."
Riva's face went pale.
"What?"
Naren grabbed his head.
"I remember..."
"A sword."
"Blood."
"Mother screaming."
Then he collapsed.
Riva caught him.
"Naren!"
---
The Blue Crown floated above them.
Its light began changing.
From blue...
To black.
Kael laughed.
"Beautiful."
Riva looked up.
"You did this."
"I didn't."
"Then who?"
Kael's expression became serious.
"The crown."
Riva stared.
"The Blue Crown doesn't erase memories."
"Then what does it do?"
"It chooses which memories are true."
Riva's eyes widened.
"So the memory of Caelan killing Naren..."
"May be real."
---
Caelan shook his head.
"No."
Riva looked at him.
"You remember?"
"No."
"I've never seen this place."
Naren slowly stood.
"You were there."
Caelan stared at him.
"Then tell me what happened."
Naren pointed at him.
"You killed me."
Riva stepped between them.
"Enough."
Naren's eyes filled with confusion.
"I don't know what's real anymore."
Riva took his hand.
"Then don't decide yet."
---
Kael appeared above them.
"That's your problem, Riva."
She looked up.
"You always refuse to choose."
Kael raised the Black Crown.
"That's why your worlds keep collapsing."
Riva's expression hardened.
"You're afraid of my choice."
"I'm afraid of nothing."
"Then come down."
Kael smiled.
"Not yet."
He looked toward Naren.
"Let him remember."
---
The Black Crown released a wave of darkness.
Naren screamed.
Memories flooded through him.
He saw himself as a child.
Riva holding him.
Riva teaching him to swim.
Riva singing to him.
Riva promising never to leave.
Then the memories changed.
A battlefield.
Caelan standing over him.
A sword in his hand.
Blood on the ground.
Riva screaming.
Naren fell to his knees.
"Mother..."
Riva rushed toward him.
"What did you see?"
"I don't know."
"Tell me."
"You were there."
"Where?"
"At my death."
---
Riva turned toward Caelan.
He looked devastated.
"I don't remember."
Naren whispered:
"Maybe you weren't supposed to."
Riva froze.
"What?"
Naren looked at the Blue Crown.
"It shows memories."
"Not truth."
---
Riva suddenly understood.
The crown didn't preserve history.
It preserved belief.
Whoever controlled it could decide what people remembered.
Kael had been using it.
"He's manipulating you."
Naren looked at her.
"How do you know?"
"Because I remember something else."
"What?"
Riva touched his forehead.
"You called me Mother."
Naren stared at her.
"Before the crown."
"Yes."
"Then maybe..."
"Maybe that was the real memory."
---
Kael's smile disappeared.
Riva looked at him.
"You can't control what someone chooses to remember."
Kael laughed.
"Can't I?"
He raised the Black Crown.
The palace walls changed.
Suddenly...
Riva saw another memory.
Caelan standing beside Kael.
They were talking.
Caelan handed him a sword.
Kael said:
"She will never know."
Caelan answered:
"She can't."
Riva stared.
Caelan looked shocked.
"I never said that."
"But I saw it."
"That's not me."
Riva looked at Kael.
"You're creating memories."
Kael smiled.
"Finally."
---
Elara stepped forward.
"Then let's destroy the crowns."
Kael's expression changed.
"No."
Elara raised her hand.
The Eighth Flame appeared.
Kael immediately attacked.
A black wave struck her.
Riva jumped in front of Elara.
The impact threw her across the room.
"Mother!"
Caelan rushed toward her.
Kael descended.
"Enough."
He reached for Elara.
Riva stood.
"You won't touch her."
Kael looked at her.
"Then I'll take something else."
He raised his hand.
The Blue Crown flew toward him.
Naren screamed.
"No!"
He grabbed the crown.
Blue light exploded.
Kael was thrown backward.
---
Naren stood trembling.
His eyes were glowing blue.
"I remember."
Riva stared.
"What?"
"Everything."
Kael slowly stood.
"No."
Naren looked at him.
"You made me believe Caelan killed me."
Kael's expression hardened.
"You don't know what you're talking about."
Naren shook his head.
"I remember the truth."
He looked at Riva.
"You were protecting me."
Riva's eyes filled with tears.
"Yes."
"You sacrificed yourself."
"Yes."
"And Caelan..."
Naren looked toward him.
"...saved me."
Caelan exhaled.
"Yes."
---
Naren walked toward Riva.
For a moment...
Neither moved.
Then he hugged her.
Riva closed her eyes.
Her lost son had remembered her.
But only for a moment.
Naren suddenly pulled away.
"Mother."
"Yes?"
"We have to leave."
"Why?"
He looked toward the ceiling.
"Because Kael wasn't trying to take my crown."
Riva frowned.
"Then what?"
Naren whispered:
"He wanted me to activate it."
---
The entire city shook.
A massive blue symbol appeared above them.
Kael smiled.
"Too late."
Riva looked at the sky.
"What did you activate?"
Naren's face went pale.
"The Memory Sea."
"What is that?"
"Every memory ever forgotten."
Riva stared.
"And now?"
Naren looked at her.
"Now they're waking up."
---
Across the underwater city...
People began screaming.
Memories returned.
Ancient wars.
Lost kingdoms.
Forgotten rulers.
Dead loved ones.
Old betrayals.
Millions of memories flooded the city.
Then one memory appeared above the palace.
A woman standing beside Kael.
Riva.
But she was wearing a black crown.
She looked directly at the world.
And said:
"When the Gates fall..."
"...I will become Queen."
Riva stared at the vision.
"I never said that."
The woman in the memory smiled.
Kael whispered:
"You will."
The vision changed.
Riva was sitting on a throne.
Caelan was kneeling before her.
Elara was standing beside her.
And Naren...
Was dead.
Riva's blood ran cold.
Kael smiled.
"That is the future."
Riva looked at him.
"No."
She raised the Eighth Flame.
"That's only one possibility."
The vision shattered.
But before it disappeared...
Riva heard a whisper.
Not Kael's.
Not the Keepers'.
Her own voice.
"Find the Crown of Memory before it finds you."
Riva froze.
Naren looked at her.
"Mother?"
Riva stared toward the dark ocean.
"The crown isn't the danger."
"Then what is?"
Riva whispered:
"The person who has been using it."
Far above the underwater city...
A fifth Crown appeared.
And someone else was already wearing it.
