Chapter 117 - chapter 20

BOOK FOUR: THE KINGDOM BEYOND THE LAST GATE

Chapter 20: The World Before the World

There was no ground.

No sky.

No darkness.

No light.

Riva couldn't feel her body.

She couldn't hear Caelan.

She couldn't hear Elara.

She couldn't even hear her own breathing.

For a moment...

She wondered if she had died.

Then someone took her hand.

"Mother."

Elara.

Riva opened her eyes.

Elara was standing beside her.

Caelan was on her other side.

And behind them...

The First Aurelia.

All four of them were floating inside an endless white space.

Riva looked around.

"Where are we?"

The First Aurelia answered:

"Before."

"Before what?"

"Before everything."

---

A single golden line appeared in the distance.

It stretched across the emptiness.

Then another.

Then another.

Within seconds, millions of lines covered the space.

They connected.

Formed shapes.

Worlds.

Stars.

Lives.

Riva stared.

"We're watching creation."

The First Aurelia nodded.

"Not watching."

"Standing inside it."

---

A voice echoed.

Not the voice of the creature.

Not the Gate.

Something older.

"Every world begins with a choice."

Riva looked around.

"Who said that?"

No answer.

The voice continued.

"Every choice creates a path."

Millions of paths appeared.

"Every path creates a world."

The lines multiplied.

"And every world eventually chooses its ending."

Riva looked at Elara.

"So the worlds aren't destroyed."

"They choose to end?"

The First Aurelia nodded.

"That's what I discovered too late."

---

Caelan looked toward the endless paths.

"Then why does the End attack them?"

The First Aurelia answered:

"Because the End doesn't understand choice."

Riva frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"It believes every world must follow a fixed cycle."

"Beginning."

"Growth."

"Death."

"Beginning again."

Elara whispered:

"And it wants to control the cycle."

"Yes."

---

Suddenly one of the paths brightened.

A world appeared.

Riva recognized it.

Elaris.

But different.

The palace was peaceful.

No war.

No Gates.

No Devourers.

She watched herself walking through the palace.

Caelan was beside her.

Elara was there too.

Everyone was alive.

Riva smiled.

"This is what could have been."

The First Aurelia shook her head.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because it never happened."

Riva looked at her.

"Then why can I see it?"

"Because every choice creates a possibility."

---

Another path appeared.

Elaris was burning.

Caelan was dead.

Elara was missing.

Riva stood alone.

Another.

Riva had become the First Aurelia.

Another.

Elara had become the Guardian.

Another.

The Devourers had consumed everything.

Riva closed her eyes.

"How many possibilities are there?"

The First Aurelia answered:

"Endless."

---

The creature appeared in the distance.

It was no longer wearing Riva's face.

It was enormous.

A shape made of darkness and light.

The First Thought.

The Beginning.

The End.

It spoke.

"You see now."

Riva looked at it.

"I see enough."

"Then choose."

"Choose what?"

"Which world survives."

---

Riva stared.

"You want me to choose one?"

"Yes."

"Then what happens to the others?"

"They end."

Riva shook her head.

"No."

The creature tilted its head.

"You cannot save every possibility."

Riva looked at the countless worlds.

"Maybe not."

She looked at Elara.

"But I can stop them from needing to be saved."

---

The creature became still.

Riva continued.

"You're forcing every world into the same cycle."

"You're deciding when they begin."

"When they end."

"Who lives."

"Who dies."

"Who remembers."

"Who forgets."

She raised the Eighth Flame.

"That's not balance."

"It's control."

---

The creature's voice became louder.

"Control prevents chaos."

Riva answered:

"Chaos is part of being alive."

"Choice creates suffering."

"Yes."

"Love creates loss."

"Yes."

"Freedom creates war."

"Sometimes."

The creature asked:

"Then why choose it?"

Riva smiled.

"Because the alternative isn't living."

---

The Eighth Flame expanded.

The First Flame appeared beside it.

Then the Seven Flames.

Together they formed a circle.

The creature stepped backward.

"No."

Riva looked at the flames.

"I know what I have to do."

The First Aurelia suddenly grabbed her arm.

"Wait."

Riva looked at her.

"What?"

"If you do this..."

"You'll destroy the Gate."

Riva nodded.

"Yes."

"And every world will become independent."

"Yes."

"No one will control their beginning or ending."

"Yes."

The First Aurelia's eyes filled with tears.

"Then the Gates will disappear."

Riva smiled.

"That's the point."

---

Caelan stepped closer.

"If the Gates disappear..."

"Everyone will be separated."

Riva looked at him.

"Maybe."

"Then how will we find each other?"

Riva took his hand.

"We'll choose to."

Caelan smiled.

"Again?"

"Again."

---

Elara stepped forward.

"And what happens to me?"

Riva looked at her daughter.

"You finally get to live your own life."

Elara smiled.

"Without being the Lock?"

"Without being anything except Elara."

---

The First Aurelia looked toward Riva.

"And me?"

Riva smiled.

"You choose too."

The First Aurelia's eyes filled with tears.

For thousands of years...

No one had ever offered her that.

She whispered:

"I choose..."

The Eighth Flame moved toward her.

"...to let go."

---

The First Aurelia opened her hands.

The Seven Flames left her body.

The First Flame shattered.

The Gate began collapsing.

The creature screamed.

"YOU CANNOT DESTROY THE CYCLE!"

Riva shouted:

"I'm not destroying it!"

She raised the Eighth Flame.

"I'm ending your control over it!"

The white world exploded.

---

Riva felt herself falling.

Caelan's hand slipped from hers.

"Riva!"

She reached for him.

"Caelan!"

Elara screamed.

"Mother!"

The First Aurelia disappeared into the light.

The countless worlds began separating.

One by one...

The Gates closed.

The Devourers vanished.

The First Kingdom disappeared.

The golden lines broke apart.

And the First Gate...

Collapsed.

---

Riva opened her eyes.

She was lying on grass.

Real grass.

A blue sky stretched above her.

Birds were singing.

She sat up.

"Caelan?"

No answer.

"Elara?"

Nothing.

Riva's heart began racing.

She stood.

The world was peaceful.

Too peaceful.

Then she saw something in the distance.

A small village.

People were walking.

Children were playing.

No Gates.

No magic.

No shadows.

No ancient palace.

Riva whispered:

"Did it work?"

A voice answered behind her.

"Yes."

She turned.

Caelan stood there.

Alive.

Human.

Smiling.

Riva ran toward him.

He caught her.

For a moment...

Neither spoke.

Then Riva whispered:

"Where is Elara?"

Caelan looked toward the village.

"She's there."

Riva followed his gaze.

A young woman stood near a house.

Silver eyes.

Golden hair.

Elara.

She waved.

Riva smiled through her tears.

The three of them walked toward each other.

But before they reached her...

A little girl ran past them.

She stopped.

Looked directly at Riva.

And whispered:

"I remember you."

Riva froze.

Caelan turned.

The girl smiled.

Then disappeared into the crowd.

Riva looked at him.

"Who was she?"

Caelan shook his head.

"I don't know."

Riva looked toward the sky.

Somewhere far away...

A single golden light appeared.

The Eighth Flame.

It hadn't disappeared.

It had simply changed.

And a final message appeared in the clouds:

"The Gates are gone."

Then another line appeared beneath it.

"But the story is not."

Riva stared at the words.

And for the first time...

She was afraid of what might come next.
