BOOK FOUR: THE KINGDOM BEYOND THE LAST GATE
Chapter 15: The Daughter Beyond the Gate
The darkness beyond the Last Gate moved.
Not like wind.
Not like smoke.
It breathed.
Riva stood before the opening, staring into a world that seemed to have no beginning and no end.
Somewhere inside...
Elara was waiting.
Her daughter.
A child Riva had forgotten.
A child who had never forgotten her.
Caelan stood beside her.
"I'm coming with you."
Riva looked at him.
"You don't have to."
"I know."
"Then why?"
He gave her a small smile.
"Because this time, I'm not letting you go alone."
---
Aren stepped forward.
"Then we're all coming."
Eva shook her head.
"We don't know what's beyond the Gate."
Aarvi smiled nervously.
"That's exactly why we should go together."
Lucien tightened his grip on his weapon.
"If Elara is alive, we bring her back."
The First Guardian looked toward the Queen.
"And if bringing her back destroys Elaris?"
The Queen didn't answer.
Riva did.
"Then we'll find another way."
---
The First Aurelia stood behind them.
"You still don't understand."
Riva turned.
"Then come with us."
The woman looked surprised.
"You want me there?"
"I want answers."
The First Aurelia smiled.
"You won't like them."
"That's becoming a habit."
Riva turned toward the Gate.
"I'm going."
The First Aurelia finally nodded.
"Then I will follow."
---
They stepped through.
The moment Riva crossed the threshold...
Everything changed.
There was no ground.
No sky.
No sun.
Only floating islands surrounded by endless stars.
Rivers flowed upward.
Mountains hung upside down.
Thousands of doors floated in the distance.
Each door led somewhere else.
Riva whispered:
"Where are we?"
The First Aurelia answered:
"The space between worlds."
---
Caelan looked around.
"So this is where Elara has been?"
"For seventeen years."
Riva turned sharply.
"Seventeen?"
The First Aurelia nodded.
"Time doesn't move normally here."
"How old is she?"
"Seventeen."
Riva's eyes filled with tears.
"Then she isn't a child anymore."
"No."
"What is she?"
The First Aurelia looked ahead.
"Something more dangerous."
---
They continued walking.
After several minutes...
Riva heard singing.
A child's voice.
Soft.
Beautiful.
Familiar.
She stopped.
"Elara."
Caelan looked at her.
"You recognize the song?"
Riva nodded.
"I don't know how."
The First Aurelia whispered:
"Because you taught it to her."
---
The song grew louder.
They reached a floating island.
At its center stood a white tree.
Under the tree...
Someone was waiting.
A young woman.
Silver eyes.
Golden hair.
She wore a simple white dress.
Around her neck hung a small golden pendant.
Riva stopped.
The girl looked at her.
Neither spoke.
Then the girl smiled.
"You're late."
Riva's heart broke.
"Elara?"
The girl nodded.
"Hello, Mother."
Riva couldn't move.
Caelan looked away, fighting tears.
Riva finally stepped forward.
"You're real."
Elara laughed softly.
"Of course I'm real."
"I thought I'd lost you."
"You did."
Riva stopped.
Elara's smile faded.
"You forgot me."
---
Riva lowered her head.
"I'm sorry."
Elara looked at her for a long moment.
"I know."
"Can you forgive me?"
Elara smiled.
"I already did."
Riva hugged her.
For a moment...
Nothing else existed.
No Gates.
No Kings.
No prophecies.
Just a mother holding the daughter she had lost.
---
Then Elara whispered:
"Mother."
"Yes?"
"You shouldn't have come."
Riva pulled away.
"Why?"
Elara looked toward the sky.
"Because now they know where I am."
The First Aurelia's expression changed.
"Who?"
Elara pointed toward the darkness.
"The ones who live beyond the worlds."
Aren looked around.
"What are they?"
Elara answered:
"They're hungry."
---
The stars began disappearing.
One.
Then ten.
Then hundreds.
Something moved between them.
Massive shadows.
Riva grabbed Elara's hand.
"Stay close."
Elara shook her head.
"You don't understand."
"Understand what?"
Elara looked at her.
"I'm not the one they want."
Riva froze.
"Then who?"
Elara looked at the First Aurelia.
"They want her."
Everyone turned.
The First Aurelia stepped backward.
For the first time...
She looked genuinely terrified.
Elara continued:
"She's been hiding from them for thousands of years."
The First Aurelia whispered:
"Elara..."
"You told me never to say their name."
Riva stared.
"What name?"
Elara looked toward the darkness.
"The Devourers."
---
A sound echoed across the void.
A deep, terrible whisper.
"Aurelia."
The First Aurelia closed her eyes.
"They found us."
Riva stepped between her daughter and the darkness.
"What do they want?"
Elara answered:
"They eat worlds."
Caelan raised his sword.
"Then we'll fight."
Elara looked at him sadly.
"You can't."
"Why?"
"Because they're not creatures."
"They're endings."
---
The darkness expanded.
A gigantic shape appeared.
Then another.
Then another.
The First Aurelia raised her hands.
White light exploded around them.
"Everyone behind me!"
The Devourer spoke.
"You cannot hide forever."
The First Aurelia screamed:
"Run!"
Riva grabbed Elara.
"Where?"
Elara pointed toward a distant golden door.
"That way."
"What's behind it?"
Elara looked at her mother.
"Our original home."
Riva stared.
"You mean..."
Elara nodded.
"The First Kingdom."
---
They ran.
Behind them...
The Devourers followed.
The floating islands began collapsing.
Caelan fought the smaller shadows.
Aren and Lucien protected Eva and Aarvi.
The First Guardian tried to hold the path together.
Riva held Elara's hand.
"Why didn't you come back?"
Elara looked at her.
"Because I was waiting."
"For what?"
"For you to remember me."
Riva's eyes filled with tears.
"You could have come."
"I tried."
"What stopped you?"
Elara looked toward the golden door.
"Her."
Riva looked at the First Aurelia.
"Why?"
Elara's voice became quiet.
"Because she was afraid of what I would become."
---
They reached the golden door.
Elara placed her hand against it.
The door opened.
Beyond it was a kingdom.
A vast golden city.
White towers.
Seven suns.
And at the center...
A palace larger than anything Riva had ever seen.
Riva stared.
"This is..."
Elara nodded.
"Where you were born."
Riva stepped through.
Then stopped.
Because standing at the top of the palace stairs...
Was another Riva.
Older.
Covered in blood.
Holding a sword.
She looked directly at them.
And whispered:
"You're not supposed to bring her here."
Riva stared at her.
"Who are you?"
The older woman looked at Elara.
Then at Riva.
"I am the last version of you."
She raised her sword.
"And I am the one who killed the First Aurelia."
