BOOK THREE: The Fall of the First Kingdom
Chapter 16: The Bridge Beyond the Kingdom
A deep rumble echoed beneath the sanctuary.
The ground trembled as ancient gears, silent for thousands of years, awakened.
From the edge of the sanctuary, a bridge of shimmering silver light slowly extended into a vast sea of mist.
No one could see where it ended.
Only endless white clouds stretched beyond it.
Caelan stared at the bridge.
"It wasn't here before."
The First Guardian nodded.
"It only appears for those chosen by the Promise."
---
Lucien stepped toward the bridge.
"So this is where the cloaked man is going."
Arcturus stopped him.
"Not so fast."
"The Bridge Beyond the Kingdom is alive."
"It judges every traveler."
Almost as if responding to his words, the bridge rippled like water.
Ancient symbols flowed across its surface before disappearing again.
---
Eva examined the glowing runes with her compass.
"They're not warnings."
"They're questions."
"What kind of questions?"
Aarvi asked.
Eva frowned.
"I don't know yet."
---
Without warning, the first section of the bridge cracked.
Not from damage.
From illusion.
The silver path split into three identical bridges, each leading into the mist.
Only one was real.
The others slowly faded into darkness.
Lucien sighed.
"Of course it couldn't be that simple."
---
The First Guardian smiled.
"The First Kingdom never valued strength alone."
"It valued wisdom."
---
Three stone tablets rose from the ground.
Each carried a single sentence.
The first read:
"The shortest road is not always the right one."
The second read:
"The brightest light can hide the deepest shadow."
The third read:
"Only those who walk together will reach tomorrow."
The Six Heirs read them carefully.
---
Aarvi pointed toward the bridge on the left.
"It looks the safest."
Lucien looked at the one in the center.
"It goes straight."
Parna remained silent.
Instead, she watched the White Tree.
Its silver leaves were drifting toward the bridge on the right.
Riva smiled.
"The tree is showing us."
Eva nodded.
"And the third message gives us the answer."
---
Instead of walking one by one...
The Six Heirs joined hands.
Caelan stood beside Riva.
The First Guardian, Arcturus, the old gardener, and Elias followed behind them.
Together, they stepped onto the right-hand bridge.
The moment all of them were standing on it...
The other two bridges shattered into countless fragments of light.
Aarvi laughed.
"It really was testing whether we'd stay together."
---
Halfway across...
The mist around them began to move.
Strange floating islands appeared.
Each held pieces of ancient Aurelia.
A forgotten school.
A marketplace.
A music hall.
A library.
All perfectly preserved.
Caelan looked around in amazement.
"It's beautiful."
The old gardener smiled.
"These are the Kingdom's Memories."
"When Aurelia disappeared..."
"Not everything vanished."
"Some memories chose to remain."
---
As they continued walking, they heard voices.
Laughter.
Music.
Children playing.
The sounds were so real that Lucien instinctively turned toward them.
For a moment...
He saw his father standing on one of the islands.
"Lucien."
His father smiled warmly.
"Come home."
Lucien froze.
---
Nearby...
Riva saw the orphanage.
The children waved at her.
Eva saw her grandmother.
Parna saw the forest where she had grown up.
Aarvi saw her uncle carving another wooden bird.
Orion saw his old Guardian squad.
Caelan saw a woman whose face he couldn't quite remember.
Each memory called their name.
---
"Wait!"
Aarvi whispered.
"I just want one minute..."
She took a step toward the edge of the bridge.
The silver path immediately began fading beneath her feet.
Riva grabbed her arm.
"No."
"They're only memories."
Aarvi looked back at the image of her uncle.
He smiled proudly before slowly fading into the mist.
"I know," she whispered.
"I just... miss him."
The Six Heirs stood beside her in silence.
No one let go of each other's hands.
The bridge became solid once more.
---
The First Guardian watched them with quiet pride.
"That was the real trial."
"To remember the past..."
"...without becoming trapped by it."
---
The mist finally cleared.
At the end of the bridge stood a colossal circular gateway made of white crystal.
Its surface reflected stars even though no sky was visible.
At its center was a single symbol.
Not a crown.
Not the White Tree.
A doorway.
The symbol slowly began glowing.
Eva's compass floated into the air.
Riva's notebook turned its own pages.
Lucien's sword shone with silver light.
Every relic resonated together.
The gateway responded.
With a thunderous sound...
The crystal doors slowly opened.
Beyond them lay a breathtaking valley unlike anything the Six Heirs had ever seen.
Floating rivers flowed through the sky.
Mountains shimmered with silver forests.
Cities carved from crystal stood untouched by time.
It wasn't abandoned.
It was waiting.
Caelan stared ahead, tears filling his eyes.
"I..."
"I remember this place."
The First Guardian looked at the valley with both joy and sorrow.
"Welcome..."
"...to the Hidden Valley."
"The last sanctuary of the First Kingdom."
Before anyone could take another step...
A familiar voice echoed from somewhere inside the valley.
Calm.
Confident.
Amused.
"I was wondering how long it would take you."
The cloaked figure slowly emerged from the silver mist, holding the black crystal in one hand.
Behind him stood dozens of silent figures dressed in ancient Aurelian robes.
He smiled.
"Welcome to the end of your journey..."
"...or the beginning of mine."
