Chapter 54 - chapter 22

BOOK TWO: THE KINGDOM BEYOND THE GATE

Chapter 22: The Child Beneath the Throne

The ancient gateway beneath the Throne of Dawn slowly opened.

A cold wind rose from the darkness below.

It carried no scent.

No sound.

Only a strange feeling...

As if the past itself had awakened.

The little girl's voice echoed once again.

"You finally found me..."

Riva's heart skipped a beat.

She knew that voice.

The Hall of Echoes.

The silver-haired child.

The one who had protected the Memory Core.

But...

That was impossible.

The Hall of Echoes was hundreds of miles away.

So why was her voice beneath the Throne of Dawn?

---

Aarvi tightened her grip on the mysterious box.

"Please don't tell me she's another future version of someone."

Eva looked toward the darkness.

"No..."

"I think she's been waiting here."

---

The silver key Adrian had left behind suddenly floated into the air.

It moved toward the ancient gateway.

Click.

The key fit perfectly into a hidden lock.

Golden light spread across the stone door.

Thousands of ancient symbols awakened together.

Eva quickly translated the nearest inscription.

"Only the Keeper of Home may enter."

Everyone looked at the silver key.

Then at the doorway.

The passage slowly opened.

---

Cassian stepped forward first.

"I'll go."

The doorway rejected him.

A wall of golden light pushed him back.

Argos tried next.

The same result.

Even Caelum couldn't enter.

Alaric sighed.

"As expected."

"The passage accepts only the Six Heirs."

---

Lucien looked toward Riva.

"Together?"

She nodded.

"No one gets left behind."

The six of them stepped forward.

The golden light surrounded them.

Instead of rejecting them...

It welcomed them.

Behind them, the doorway quietly sealed itself.

The others remained outside.

---

The tunnel beneath the throne was unlike anything they had seen before.

There were no walls.

Instead...

The passage was formed from floating memories.

Scenes from forgotten kingdoms drifted around them like living paintings.

Children playing.

Kings making promises.

Guardians laughing.

Entire civilizations living peaceful lives.

None of them appeared in history books anymore.

The Devourer had erased them.

Yet...

This place remembered.

Parna gently touched one of the floating memories.

A little flower appeared in her hand.

It glowed with soft blue light.

"Even nature survived here."

Eva smiled.

"Not nature."

"Memory."

---

They walked for what felt like hours.

Or perhaps only minutes.

Time no longer existed beneath the throne.

Finally...

The tunnel opened into an enormous underground garden.

The ceiling looked like a night sky filled with silver stars.

Crystal rivers flowed quietly through glowing flowers.

At the center of the garden stood a giant white tree.

Unlike the silver tree above...

This one had no leaves.

Its branches were bare.

Beneath the tree sat a little girl.

Silver hair.

Blue eyes.

A white dress.

Exactly as Riva remembered her.

She looked no older than ten.

She smiled as the Six Heirs approached.

"I was wondering how long you'd take."

---

Riva slowly walked toward her.

"I know you."

The little girl nodded.

"We've met before."

"In the Hall of Echoes."

"You called yourself its guardian."

The child laughed softly.

"I wasn't lying."

"But that wasn't my whole job."

---

Eva frowned.

"Who are you?"

The girl stood.

She bowed politely.

"My name..."

"...is Lyra."

"I am the First Memory."

Silence.

Aarvi blinked.

"The... what?"

"The First Memory."

"The very first memory ever protected by the Gates."

---

Lucien looked confused.

"That's impossible."

"Memories aren't people."

Lyra smiled.

"They are when they've existed long enough."

---

The white tree behind her suddenly glowed.

One by one...

Silver leaves began growing upon its branches.

The garden brightened.

Lyra gently touched the trunk.

"This tree records every happy memory that survives the Devourer."

Riva looked around.

"So this place..."

"It's protecting every forgotten world."

Lyra nodded.

"As long as one memory remains..."

"No world is completely lost."

---

Suddenly—

The ground shook violently.

The peaceful garden trembled.

Cracks spread across the crystal river.

Dark mist seeped through the earth.

Lyra's smile disappeared.

"He's found us."

---

Above the garden...

The ceiling became transparent.

The Six Heirs could see through the stone.

They watched as the Devourer's enormous shadow wrapped itself around the Throne of Dawn.

Its countless eyes slowly opened.

One after another.

Watching.

Searching.

Waiting.

---

Eva's crystal sphere floated upward.

A new message appeared.

She read aloud.

"The Heart is weakening."

"The First Memory is exposed."

"Choose the Guardian."

Everyone looked at Lyra.

"What does that mean?" Parna asked.

Lyra answered quietly.

"The First Memory cannot protect itself."

"It needs someone."

"A Guardian."

Riva stepped forward.

"I'll do it."

Lyra smiled sadly.

"I knew you'd say that."

"But you can't."

"Why not?"

"Because your destiny lies beyond this garden."

---

Suddenly—

The mysterious box in Aarvi's hands burst open completely.

For the first time since Book One...

Every hidden compartment unlocked.

Inside was one final object.

A tiny wooden bird.

The same bird her uncle used to carve.

As Aarvi picked it up...

The bird began singing.

Not an ordinary song.

An ancient lullaby.

Lyra's eyes widened.

"The Song of Home..."

"It still exists."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I haven't heard it..."

"...for thousands of years."

The white tree glowed brighter than ever before.

Its roots spread across the garden.

The dark mist retreated.

Even the Devourer's shadow hesitated.

Eva looked at the wooden bird in amazement.

"Your uncle knew."

Aarvi whispered,

"He wanted me to bring this here."

---

Then, for the first time, Lyra looked afraid.

She turned toward the darkness beyond the garden.

"No..."

"He's coming himself."

The peaceful underground world suddenly fell silent.

The birds stopped singing.

The rivers stopped flowing.

The glowing flowers closed their petals.

Even the stars above disappeared.

From the darkness beyond the garden...

Footsteps echoed slowly.

Not hundreds.

Not thousands.

Just one person walking.

Step...

Step...

Step...

A tall figure wearing a cloak woven from living darkness emerged between the trees.

Unlike the monstrous form in the sky...

This figure looked completely human.

His face remained hidden beneath a hood.

He stopped a few feet away from Lyra.

Then he spoke in a calm, gentle voice that sent chills through everyone.

"Lyra..."

"It's time to come home."

Lyra stepped backward.

For the first time...

The First Memory was terrified.
