Chapter 35 - chapter 3

Chapter 3: The Key Bearer

The valley fell silent.

The gentle sound of flowing water disappeared.

The blue flowers that had covered the ground only moments ago folded their petals as if hiding from an approaching nightmare.

Three black-armored figures stood at the edge of the forest.

Their armor seemed to absorb every ray of light.

Beneath their helmets—

There were no faces.

Only endless darkness.

The leader slowly lowered its spear toward the silver-haired traveler.

Its hollow voice echoed across the valley.

"Return the Key Bearer."

"Or all worlds shall fall."

No one moved.

Cassian stepped forward, placing himself between the traveler and the strangers.

"I don't know who you are," he said firmly, "but if you wish to reach this traveler, you'll have to pass through us."

The faceless leader remained perfectly still.

"We have no quarrel with the Heirs of Aurelia."

"Our mission concerns only the Key Bearer."

The traveler's expression tightened.

"They'll never stop," they whispered.

"They've been hunting me for centuries."

Aarvi frowned.

"Centuries?"

"You don't look older than twenty-five."

The traveler gave a sad smile.

"Looks can lie."

Before anyone could ask another question, the ground trembled.

Black cracks spread beneath the valley.

The flowers instantly withered wherever the darkness touched.

Parna rushed forward and placed both hands on the earth.

Bright emerald light flowed into the soil.

The dying flowers slowly bloomed again.

The darkness retreated.

Parna gasped.

"It isn't destroying nature..."

"It's stealing its life."

Orion's face became serious.

"I've seen power like this before."

Everyone looked at him.

"When?"

He closed his eyes.

"I don't remember where..."

"But I remember fighting it."

Fragments of forgotten memories flashed through his mind.

A battlefield.

Burning skies.

A giant gate.

Countless warriors.

Someone standing beside him...

Holding a staff covered with blue flowers.

Orion's eyes snapped open.

He looked at the traveler.

"You..."

"We fought together."

The traveler smiled faintly.

"So one memory survived."

"My name is Elian."

The name echoed through the valley.

Riva felt a strange ache in her chest.

Not pain.

Recognition.

As if she had heard that name long ago.

As if someone had whispered it into her dreams.

Eva's compass suddenly spun wildly.

The needle pointed toward Elian.

Then toward Orion.

Then toward the distant north.

Over and over again.

"It can't decide," Eva whispered.

"No," Elian corrected gently.

"It's trying to connect the pieces."

"The compass remembers me."

Eva looked confused.

"What do you mean?"

Before Elian could answer, the faceless leader slammed its spear into the ground.

The entire valley shook.

Dark mist poured from the cracks.

Dozens...

Hundreds...

Thousands of black shadows emerged from beneath the earth.

They weren't Seekers.

They weren't monsters.

They looked like empty human silhouettes made entirely of smoke.

The Royal Guards immediately drew their weapons.

Cassian shouted,

"Protect the Heirs!"

The battle began.

The shadow creatures charged without making a sound.

Selene cut through the first one.

The creature dissolved instantly—

Only to reform a few steps away.

"It regenerated!" she shouted.

Cassian swung his golden sword.

Another shadow disappeared.

Then reappeared behind him.

"They can't be killed."

Elian shook his head.

"They're not alive."

"They're memories."

Everyone froze.

"What?"

Riva asked.

"These creatures are memories stolen from people whose kingdoms were erased."

The words hit the group like lightning.

"They're trapped between existence and nothingness."

"They don't even know who they were."

Aarvi lowered her weapon.

"So they're victims..."

Elian nodded sadly.

"Yes."

"But someone is controlling them."

The faceless leader slowly raised its hand.

Every shadow creature turned toward the Five Heirs.

Not the Royal Guards.

Not Cassian.

Not Orion.

Only the Five.

"They seek the Star Marks," Elian warned.

"If they touch you..."

"They'll steal your memories."

Riva suddenly remembered the destroyed Master Archive.

The Seekers hadn't just erased history.

They had stolen it.

The shadow creatures lunged.

Eva quickly raised the compass.

Ancient symbols burst from its surface.

Golden circles appeared beneath every shadow.

Their movements slowed.

Parna summoned vines from beneath the valley floor.

Instead of attacking, the vines wrapped around the shadows gently.

The creatures stopped struggling.

For a brief second...

Their empty faces became human.

Some smiled.

Some cried.

Then they faded peacefully into light.

Parna looked stunned.

"They didn't need to be destroyed."

"They needed to be remembered."

Elian smiled proudly.

"Exactly."

Meanwhile, Orion faced the faceless leader alone.

Their weapons collided.

Black crystal met silver steel.

Each strike shook the valley.

"You've forgotten your purpose, Guardian," the leader hissed.

Orion blocked another attack.

"My purpose is to protect."

"No."

The leader replied.

"Your purpose was to guard the Gate."

Orion hesitated.

Just for a second.

The leader saw the opening.

A blast of black energy struck Orion directly in the chest.

He was thrown backward across the valley.

"Orion!"

Riva screamed.

Before anyone could reach him—

His Star Mark began glowing violently.

So did Riva's.

Then Eva's.

Parna's.

Aarvi's.

Five beams of silver light shot into the sky.

The entire valley trembled.

High above them...

The clouds parted.

For the first time...

Everyone saw it.

Far beyond the mountains.

Far beyond the horizon.

The ancient Gate.

Now open wider than before.

And standing inside the Gate...

Was a silhouette.

Watching them.

Waiting.

The figure slowly lifted one hand.

Then disappeared into the darkness beyond the Gate.

Elian's face turned pale.

"We're too late."

Riva looked at him.

"Too late for what?"

Elian's voice trembled.

"The first Guardian of the Gate..."

"...has awakened."

Far away, beyond the Gate, an ancient bell rang once.

Its sound echoed across worlds.

And something that had slept for thousands of years...

Opened its eyes.
