Chapter 9 - CHAPTER 8

THE ECHO OF THE FOUR KEYS

Some objects are created.

Some objects are discovered.

And some objects are awakened.

The compass and the box belonged to the third kind.

They had been sleeping for decades.

Waiting.

Remembering.

Watching.

And now—

They had found each other again.

---

The storm hung above Black Hollow Station like a living thing.

Dark clouds twisted across the sky.

Thunder rolled through the distant hills.

Rain threatened to fall at any moment.

The abandoned station stood silent beneath the growing darkness.

Broken windows reflected flashes of lightning.

Overgrown vines crawled across ancient stone.

Nature had attempted to reclaim the place.

Yet somehow Black Hollow refused to disappear.

As if something beneath it refused to be forgotten.

---

Eva stood at the edge of the clearing.

The compass felt unusually warm inside her hand.

Its silver needle remained perfectly still.

Pointing directly toward the station.

For the first time in months, it had stopped searching.

It had found its destination.

Or so she thought.

---

Several hundred meters away, hidden behind the remains of an old wall, Aarvi stared at the mysterious box.

The carvings covering its surface glowed brighter than ever before.

Golden light escaped through the narrow opening.

Soft whispers echoed from within.

Whispers she still couldn't understand.

Yet they felt strangely familiar.

Almost comforting.

Almost like voices from home.

---

A sudden vibration ran through the box.

Aarvi nearly dropped it.

The golden light intensified.

The carvings pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then the box pointed itself toward the station.

---

Aarvi froze.

The box had moved.

On its own.

---

At the exact same moment—

Eva's compass reacted.

Violently.

The needle spun wildly.

Silver light exploded beneath the glass.

The symbols surrounding the compass began glowing.

Brighter than ever before.

---

Two artifacts.

Separated by distance.

Reacting to one another.

Calling to one another.

Recognizing one another.

---

Far away, hidden among the trees, the caretaker watched.

His expression became serious immediately.

"No..."

The words escaped before he could stop them.

Because he knew what was happening.

The artifacts remembered.

The artifacts had recognized each other.

And once that process began—

There was no stopping it.

---

Lightning flashed.

The station briefly illuminated.

For a fraction of a second, strange symbols appeared across the old stone walls.

Ancient symbols.

The same symbols Riva had been drawing.

The same symbols Eva had been decoding.

The same symbols hidden within the box.

---

The connection was becoming visible.

---

Riva arrived minutes later.

Her notebook clutched tightly against her chest.

The moment she stepped into the clearing, her heart began racing.

Everything felt familiar.

The station.

The broken clock tower.

The old platform.

Even the damaged stone pillars.

She had seen all of them before.

Not in real life.

In visions.

In dreams.

In drawings.

---

Slowly she opened her notebook.

Page after page revealed sketches of Black Hollow.

Every detail matched.

Every corner.

Every crack.

Every shadow.

---

Her hands trembled.

"How is this possible?"

No answer came.

Only thunder.

---

Parna emerged from the forest shortly afterward.

The birds that normally followed her remained unusually quiet.

The trees surrounding the station leaned inward.

Almost as if they were bowing.

Respecting something ancient.

Something sleeping beneath the earth.

---

The moment Parna stepped into the clearing, the wind changed.

Leaves swirled around her.

Branches shifted.

Nature itself seemed restless.

Nervous.

Afraid.

---

For the first time, the four girls occupied the same location.

Not together.

Not yet.

But close enough.

Connected enough.

Destined enough.

---

And then it happened.

---

The compass began floating.

---

Eva gasped.

The silver object slowly rose into the air.

Suspended by invisible force.

Light poured from beneath the glass.

The symbols glowed brightly.

---

At the exact same moment—

The box rose as well.

Golden energy surrounded it.

The carvings illuminated the darkness.

Whispers became voices.

The voices became words.

Ancient words.

Forgotten words.

Remembered words.

---

The station trembled.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Broken windows shattered.

The ground vibrated beneath everyone's feet.

---

Riva looked toward the floating compass.

Then toward the floating box.

Then toward the glowing symbols appearing across the station walls.

A realization struck her.

Terrifying.

Impossible.

Yet undeniable.

---

All of this was connected.

---

Her visions.

Parna's forest.

Eva's compass.

Aarvi's box.

Every mystery.

Every dream.

Every clue.

Every symbol.

---

Connected.

---

The realization struck the others almost simultaneously.

Different lives.

Different cities.

Different experiences.

Yet somehow every path had led to Black Hollow.

Every path had led to the same place.

The same symbols.

The same storm.

The same questions.

---

They weren't strangers connected by coincidence.

They were pieces of the same mystery.

---

A massive flash of lightning illuminated the sky.

And suddenly—

The compass and the box released a burst of energy.

Silver and gold collided above the station.

The light expanded outward.

Filling the clearing.

Filling the forest.

Filling the world.

---

For a brief moment—

Everyone saw the same thing.

---

A city.

Magnificent.

Ancient.

Golden towers touched the clouds.

Silver rivers flowed through marble streets.

Massive gates guarded enormous walls.

Thousands of people filled the city.

Alive.

Laughing.

Living.

---

Aurelia.

---

The vision lasted only seconds.

Yet it felt eternal.

---

Then another image appeared.

Four children standing before a throne.

A king.

A queen.

A guardian.

And behind them—

A shadow.

Watching.

Waiting.

---

The vision shattered.

The light disappeared.

The station returned.

The storm remained.

But everything had changed.

---

The girls stared at one another for the first time.

Finally seeing the people connected to their mysteries.

Finally seeing the faces hidden behind dreams and visions.

Finally seeing proof they were not alone.

---

Silence filled the clearing.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Impossible to ignore.

---

"You saw it too."

Eva spoke first.

Quietly.

Almost afraid of the answer.

---

Riva nodded.

Slowly.

---

Parna looked toward the station.

Then toward the others.

"I've dreamed about this place."

---

Aarvi tightened her grip on the box.

"My box showed me that city."

---

The silence returned.

But this time it felt different.

Not empty.

Connected.

---

Before anyone could speak again—

The station doors slammed shut.

Violently.

---

A deep sound echoed from beneath the earth.

Ancient.

Powerful.

Hungry.

---

The caretaker immediately stepped forward.

For the first time.

No longer hiding.

No longer watching from the shadows.

No longer protecting them from a distance.

---

The girls turned toward him.

Shock filled their faces.

Recognition followed.

Riva had seen him before.

Watching near the orphanage.

Eva remembered him outside the café.

Parna remembered seeing a shadow within the forest.

Aarvi remembered glimpsing him near her apartment.

---

The realization struck all four at once.

---

He had been following them.

For years.

---

The caretaker stopped several feet away.

Rain began falling around him.

Thunder echoed above.

The storm finally arrived.

---

His eyes moved across the four girls.

One by one.

Carefully.

Almost sadly.

---

Then he spoke.

The words changed everything.

---

"I know who you are."

---

Lightning illuminated the clearing.

The girls froze.

---

The caretaker's voice remained calm.

Yet something beneath it carried decades of pain.

Decades of secrets.

Decades of waiting.

---

"And if we don't leave now..."

He looked toward the darkness surrounding Black Hollow.

Toward something hidden beyond the trees.

Toward something only he could see.

---

"...he will find you."

---

The girls exchanged confused glances.

---

"He?" Eva asked.

---

The caretaker's expression darkened.

For the first time, genuine fear appeared within his eyes.

---

Far beyond the clearing.

Far beyond the storm.

Two crimson eyes opened within the darkness.

Watching.

Smiling.

Waiting.

---

The black light had arrived.

And the hunt was no longer beginning.

It had already begun.
