When Gideon finally materialized inside the building, he let out a quiet breath of relief. He was glad that the teleportation scroll worked as long as he could see the destination. It didn't matter whether he had been there before.
The relief didn't last.
Panicked voices echoed from below, sharp and desperate. The traveling faction was gathered there.
For now, he stayed put and decided to observe first. Waiting for the right moment.
Gideon moved down the stairs carefully and stopped just before the landing, hiding behind the concrete wall. From there, he listened.
At least twenty people were packed into the hallway below. Far less than he had expected. The space was narrow, claustrophobic, and filled with fear.
"What should we do?!"
"My grandpa is still out there! Let me go! I have to help him!"
That voice stood out amongst all the terrified shouts.
