Esme's POV
Ruby's room smelled of sweet incense and ashes. I peeked inside but saw only pitch black. I exhaled. Why did I feel cautious to meet with him?
If he wouldn't approve of Escanor because of his origin, then I would just have to convince him. He could also test the young man if he wanted.
"Should I light up the candles for you?"
Hearing his calm voice eased me. I walked in. "It's okay. It is dark, but we can talk regardless."
Eidrin's room was in a constant state of darkness, yet it was the best place to sleep. I gently felt the bed and climbed onto it.
"Ritch told me."
I swallowed a lump of saliva, chuckling nervously. Since he already knew why I was here, could he give me the answer I hoped for?
"So what do you think?"
The darkness in the room added to the anxiety I felt. I reached toward him to be sure he listened. Moving my hand a bit, I couldn't feel any warmth on the bed. Wasn't he there?
"Should I move closer?"
