Chapter 103 - Narrow Escape

The collapse bought him seconds.

Nothing more.

Dust and debris filled the air behind Aiden as the overpass crumbled completely, sealing off the direct path.

Concrete slabs crushed together.

Steel beams twisted.

For a moment Silence.

Aiden stood there, breathing heavily.

"…that should slow them down."

Behind the rubble—

A faint glow flickered.

Then It cut through.

A thin beam sliced cleanly through the collapsed structure.

Then another.

Then five more.

The drones weren't going around.

They were going through.

"…yeah."

Aiden exhaled.

"Should've expected that."

[OBSTRUCTION REMOVAL IN PROGRESS]

Chunks of debris began to collapse inward as the drones carved a path through.

Fast.

Efficient.

Relentless.

Aiden turned.

"…no more stalling."

He ran.

Not holding back this time.

His body protested instantly.

Every muscle strained.

Every breath heavier than the last.

Still He pushed forward.

Back near the edge of the sector Hana and Kael had stopped.

Kael turned.

"He's still back there."

Hana didn't respond.

Her eyes were locked on the distant smoke.

"…he's buying time."

Kael clenched his jaw.

"For what?"

Hana's voice was quiet.

"…for us to live."

Silence.

Then She turned.

"…we're not wasting it."

They moved.

Fast.

Back on the battlefield Aiden leapt across a broken street, landing roughly on the other side.

The moment his feet hit the ground—

The drones burst through the debris behind him.

Faster than before.

[TARGET REACQUIRED]

"…damn."

They fired instantly.

Aiden twisted Barely dodging the first wave One beam struck the ground Explosion He was thrown sideways Rolled Got up Didn't stop.

"…keep moving."

The city blurred around him.

Broken buildings.

Flickering lights.

Shattered streets.

All of it became background.

Only movement mattered.

Only survival.

Another volley fired Aiden jumped Twisted mid-air, A beam grazed his leg He landed hard Almost collapsed "…not good."

His body was reaching its limit.

The energy inside him flickered again.

Unstable.

Dangerous.

Calling him.

"…not now."

He forced it down.

If he lost control here—

There would be nothing left.

Ahead An underground access point.

Partially collapsed.

Narrow.

Too tight for full drone maneuvering.

Aiden's eyes sharpened.

"…there."

He sprinted toward it.

The drones reacted instantly.

[PATH PREDICTION UPDATED]

They fired—

Cutting off angles—

Trying to force him away But Aiden pushed through.

One beam clipped his side—

Another exploded behind him He didn't stop.

He reached the entrance Dove inside.

Darkness swallowed him.

The drones hovered outside.

Their formation shifted.

Smaller units detached.

Entering the tunnel.

[PURSUIT CONTINUES]

Inside Aiden stumbled forward, catching himself against the wall.

"…tight space."

His breathing was uneven now.

His vision slightly blurred.

But his eyes stayed focused.

"…good."

Behind him—

The drones entered.

But slower.

Restricted.

Limited movement.

Limited angles.

Their advantage Reduced.

Aiden smirked weakly.

"…now it's fair."

He turned.

The narrow tunnel stretched behind him.

Dim lights flickering.

Dust drifting through the air.

The drones approached.

Careful.

Calculated.

But no longer overwhelming.

Aiden clenched his fist.

Energy flickered again.

Stronger than before.

Closer than ever.

"…just a little more control."

He stepped forward.

This time Not running.

Not escaping.

Fighting.

The first drone fired Aiden moved Not fully stable But enough.

He slipped past the beam Struck—

CRACK.

The drone shattered against the tunnel wall.

The others adjusted—

But slower now.

Limited.

Predictable.

Aiden moved again, And this time He smiled.

"…I can work with this."

Far above The city remained still.

Watching.

Waiting.

Deep within the system—

Final Constant processed everything.

[ENVIRONMENTAL ADAPTATION REQUIRED]

Its evolution continued.

[V3 PROTOCOL: 41% COMPLETE]

The next time It wouldn't be slowed.

It wouldn't be restricted.

It would be ready.

And so would Aiden.
