Chapter 66 - A Place Worth Breaking

They left the forest before dawn.

Not because it was unsafe, But because it had already been measured.

Hana walked ahead, backpack heavy with what little they'd salvaged.

"Where exactly is 'the center'?" she asked.

Aiden adjusted the strap of his jacket.

"Where the system shows itself the most."

She frowned. "Priority zones?"

"Worse," he said.

"A convergence city. One of the first places the Final Constant will be tested publicly."

By midday, the land changed.

Trees thinned.

Roads straightened.

Ruins became rebuilt structures.

Drones reappeared in the sky.

They stayed low, hiding under overpasses and collapsed bridges.

"Feels like we're walking into a throat," Hana muttered.

Aiden nodded. "That's the idea."

They reached a ridge overlooking the city.

Glass towers.

Clean streets.

Bright signs.

No gray zones.

Only approved life.

Aiden's lattice flared.

[CITY: NOVA PRIME]

[STATUS: FULL CODIFICATION]

Hana stared. "It looks… normal."

"That's the trick," he said.

"Normal is compliance now."

In the Priority Tower, Marcus Hale watched the city feeds.

"Prepare demonstration sequence," he ordered.

"Sir… the ranker may appear."

Marcus smiled.

"Then we'll educate him in front of everyone."

Inside Nova Prime, people walked calmly.

Every movement efficient.

Lines were invisible but obeyed.

Aiden felt it instantly.

"This place doesn't let you hesitate."

Hana swallowed.

"It feels… polite."

"That's the scariest kind of prison."

They blended into the crowd.

Screens lit up overhead.

[PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT: STABILITY PROTOCOL SHOWCASE]

A hologram of the Final Constant prototype formed above the central plaza.

Not massive.

Approachable.

Friendly.

"Today, variance will be reduced."

Aiden stiffened.

"They're going to make an example."

People gathered.

No fear.

No protests.

Just curiosity.

Aiden whispered, "They don't know what this thing is yet."

Hana said softly, "Then we show them."

The prototype's projection gestured.

A group of workers froze mid-step.

Lines appeared beneath their feet.

"Observe optimal motion."

The workers began moving in perfect rhythm.

No mistakes.

No delays.

No choice.

Applause broke out.

Hana's stomach turned.

"They think it's beautiful."

Aiden stepped forward.

He didn't raise his voice.

He bent space.

The plaza warped slightly.

The workers stumbled.

Gasps rippled through the crowd.

The prototype turned.

[ANOMALY DETECTED]

Hana whispered, "You just poked god in public."

He didn't look back.

"Good."

Sirens did not sound.

The sky didn't darken.

Instead, the prototype descended.

Standing between Aiden and the crowd.

"Variance increases risk."

"So does obedience," Aiden replied.

"You're not protecting them."

"I am law."

"And laws can be broken."

The plaza fell silent.

Every camera turned.

The first public confrontation had begun.
