Chapter 31 - The Capital Approach

The heartlands of the Pale Sun spread before them like a conquered dream.

Golden fields rippled under summer wind; white-stone villages lay abandoned or surrendered without a fight, their inhabitants fleeing south or joining the swelling tide of the Crimson Thorn. Church banners had been torn down and replaced with crimson thorns and allied sigils: scorpion tails, frozen crowns, volcanic hammers.

The capital loomed on the horizon—Palespire, the City of Eternal Light. Its walls rose a hundred feet, topped with golden wards that once blazed with holy fire. Now they flickered weakly, strained by the approach of an army that carried winter, desert, mountain, and volcano in its veins.

Elara rode at the head, cloaked in living snow from the Frost Queen, core-runes pulsing beneath. Thorne loped beside her in full wolf form, Zahra on her lizard mount, Gorim on a dwarven steam-goat, the yeti matriarch striding with earth-shaking steps. Vyrath circled overhead, a living eclipse.

Behind them marched thirty thousand—no longer rebels, but a nation reborn.

They made camp ten leagues from the walls, in the ruins of an old pilgrimage road. Scouts reported the city sealed tight: gates barred, bridges raised, the High Pontiff rallying his last faithful with promises of divine retribution.

But the Crimson Thorn had not come for a siege.

They had come to infiltrate.

That night, under a moonless sky, Elara gathered her inner circle in the command pavilion.

"We strike at the heart," she said, spreading a map stolen from Cassian's chambers long ago. "Underground tunnels—old sewer ways and forgotten catacombs—lead beneath the walls. The guards are few; most are conscripted and wavering."

Zahra traced a route with a scorpion-marked finger. "My riders can silence the outer sentries. Dwarven sappers breach any sealed gates."

Gorim nodded. "And my golems will hold the tunnels if they collapse."

The Frost Queen's voice whispered like wind through cracks. "My ice will mask our passage."

Elara met each gaze in turn. "Small teams. We go in darkness, emerge inside the lower city. Open the gates from within at dawn. No grand battle—just precision."

Thorne's growl was low. "And the Pontiff?"

Elara's smile was slow and dangerous. "He's mine."

They moved at midnight.

Elara led the vanguard: herself, Thorne, Zahra, a squad of Sandveil infiltrators, and two silent yetis cloaked in frost-magic. Dwarven sappers followed with muffled tools.

The tunnel entrance was hidden beneath an abandoned shrine—stone door sealed centuries ago. Gorim's golems pried it open with barely a sound.

Darkness swallowed them.

The tunnels stank of age and stagnant water, but the Oracle's silver veins glowed faintly on Elara's skin, lighting the way like moonlight on a river. Air elementals whispered ahead, scouting turns.

They encountered the first guards an hour in—conscripts huddled around a weak lantern, faces gaunt with fear.

Elara stepped into the light.

The men froze, recognizing the glowing marks from Church warnings: the Crimson Blight herself.

She raised a hand—not in threat, but invitation.

"You were forced to serve," she said softly. "Lay down arms, and walk free. The Pale Sun falls tonight."

One by one, weapons clattered to the stone. A sergeant wept openly.

They bound the men loosely—honor guards now—and pressed on.

Deeper in, the tunnels narrowed to confined passages slick with seepage. Thorne's bulk scraped the walls; yetis crouched low.

Zahra's whisper carried back: "Guards ahead—heavier."

Elara nodded.

They emerged into a wider chamber beneath the inner wall—a guard post, twenty men in full plate, blessed relics glowing.

No time for words.

The Sandveil struck first—silent blades from shadows, throats slit before alarms could sound. Thorne charged the rest, claws rending armor like parchment. Yetis crushed helms in massive fists.

Elara moved through the chaos like a crimson storm—touching foreheads, planting seeds of desire and doubt. Surviving guards dropped to their knees, begging surrender.

The inner gate loomed—a massive iron portcullis barring the way into the city proper.

Dwarven sappers set charges of lava-essence. The explosion was muffled by air elementals, but the gate buckled and fell.

They spilled into the lower city—dark alleys and shuttered homes.

Word spread like wildfire: the Crimson Blight was inside.

Citizens emerged—some fleeing, others cheering quietly. Former conscripts opened side doors for more infiltrators pouring through hidden ways.

By false dawn, teams had secured three main gates.

Elara stood in a shadowed square, watching the first light touch the cathedral spires.

Thorne nuzzled her hand. "It's time."

She nodded, pulling her cloak tight.

The final approach had begun—not with thunder, but with silence.

The tunnels had delivered them beneath the walls.

Now the city would open from within.

And the High Pontiff would face the woman he had branded abomination—naked in power, clothed in alliances forged in every extreme the world could offer.

Dominion dawned.

But the true awakening waited deeper still.
