**Episode Sixty Six**

**THE CHOICE THAT CHOSE BACK**

**Part Seven: The World Says "NO"**

---

The word...

hung in the air.

CHOOSE.

Nobody moved.

Not Tarzan.

Not Milo.

Not Diana.

Not Gandalf.

Not Arjun.

Not even the Keeper.

The billions of lights...

waited.

The jungle...

waited.

The sky...

waited.

Reality itself...

appeared to be waiting.

Tarzan slowly raised his hand.

Milo looked at him.

"What?"

Tarzan pointed toward the sky.

"I THINK..."

He paused.

"...WE SHOULD CHOOSE BANANAS."

Silence.

Milo stared at him.

"You cannot be serious."

Tarzan looked offended.

"WHY NOT?"

"Because we're apparently facing some kind of cosmic intelligence."

Tarzan nodded.

"YES."

"And possibly the force controlling human desire."

"YES."

"And you want to respond..."

"YES."

"...with bananas?"

Tarzan smiled.

"VERY SERIOUSLY."

Diana covered her face.

Gandalf sighed.

The Keeper whispered...

"I have missed this."

Arjun looked toward the billions of lights.

"Maybe..."

Everyone turned toward him.

Arjun continued.

"...that's exactly what it wants."

The smile disappeared from Tarzan's face.

"What?"

Arjun looked at the sky.

"If the thing behind those lights controls choice..."

Milo nodded.

"Then perhaps..."

Arjun continued...

"...even refusing to choose is part of its plan."

The Walker's eyes narrowed.

"Correct."

Tarzan lowered his banana.

"THAT IS VERY ANNOYING."

Milo nodded.

"Extremely."

A voice echoed across existence.

"CHOOSE."

Tarzan shouted back.

"STOP TELLING US WHAT TO DO!"

The universe...

paused.

Milo blinked.

Diana blinked.

The Keeper blinked.

Gandalf slowly smiled.

Arjun whispered...

"Did..."

He looked at the Walker.

"...did we just argue with the universe?"

The Walker stared at Tarzan.

"Apparently."

Tarzan crossed his arms.

"THE UNIVERSE STARTED IT."

For several seconds...

nothing happened.

Then...

one of the billions of lights...

went out.

Everyone stared.

Another disappeared.

Then another.

Then ten.

Then a hundred.

Then thousands.

Milo's eyes widened.

"What's happening?"

The Walker whispered...

"It's calculating."

"Calculating what?"

The Walker looked at Tarzan.

"Whether you are worth listening to."

Tarzan smiled proudly.

"I AM."

Another million lights vanished.

Milo looked horrified.

"That wasn't a compliment."

Tarzan's smile disappeared.

"...OH."

1. THE FIRST RULE OF CHOICE

The sky suddenly changed.

A gigantic symbol appeared.

Not an eye.

Not a face.

A question.

WHAT DO YOU WANT?

The words appeared everywhere.

On trees.

On rocks.

In the clouds.

On the ground.

Even...

on Tarzan's banana.

Tarzan stared at it.

"...RUDE."

Milo took the banana from him.

"Don't eat that."

Tarzan looked at him.

"WHY?"

"It may be a psychological interface."

Tarzan stared at the banana.

Then at Milo.

Then back at the banana.

He took one bite.

Everyone screamed.

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!"

Tarzan chewed.

He swallowed.

"IT TASTES LIKE BANANA."

Milo stared at him.

"...That is somehow the least useful scientific observation I've ever heard."

Gandalf chuckled.

Diana pointed upward.

"The question."

Everyone looked.

WHAT DO YOU WANT?

Arjun stepped forward.

"I want freedom."

The sky changed.

DEFINE FREEDOM.

Arjun frowned.

"Being able to choose."

The sky changed again.

DEFINE CHOICE.

Arjun hesitated.

Milo stepped forward.

"Selecting one possibility among alternatives."

The sky answered immediately.

WHO DEFINES THE ALTERNATIVES?

Milo stopped.

Nobody spoke.

The Walker slowly lowered his head.

"That's the trap."

Diana looked at him.

"What trap?"

"The choices."

He pointed toward the sky.

"If someone controls what possibilities you can see..."

He paused.

"...they don't need to control your decision."

Milo's expression hardened.

"They only need to control the menu."

Tarzan raised his hand.

"WHAT IF I DON'T LIKE THE MENU?"

Milo looked at him.

"Then..."

Tarzan waited.

Milo sighed.

"...you've finally asked the right question."

Tarzan smiled.

"I ASK GOOD QUESTIONS."

Diana whispered...

"Occasionally."

2. THE MENU OF HUMANITY

The sky opened.

Millions of choices appeared.

PEACE.

WAR.

WEALTH.

POVERTY.

CONTROL.

FREEDOM.

IMMORTALITY.

DEATH.

ORDER.

CHAOS.

TRUTH.

COMFORT.

Then...

a final option appeared.

NONE OF THE ABOVE.

Everyone stared.

Milo smiled.

"Interesting."

The Walker immediately shook his head.

"No."

Milo looked at him.

"No?"

"That option is still part of the menu."

Milo's smile disappeared.

"Oh."

Gandalf nodded.

"Indeed."

Tarzan looked confused.

"So..."

He pointed at the choices.

"If I choose nothing..."

The Walker answered.

"You chose nothing."

Tarzan frowned.

"And if I choose none..."

"You chose none."

Tarzan became increasingly frustrated.

"THEN HOW DO WE WIN?"

Nobody answered.

Tarzan looked at the sky.

"HEY!"

The billions of lights flickered.

Tarzan shouted...

"WE DON'T WANT YOUR CHOICES!"

The universe became silent.

Then...

the question disappeared.

A new one appeared.

THEN WHAT?

Tarzan froze.

Milo whispered...

"That's..."

He smiled.

"...beautiful."

The Walker looked at him.

"Or dangerous."

Milo nodded.

"Usually both."

3. DIANA'S ANSWER

Diana stepped forward.

She looked at the infinite possibilities.

Then closed her eyes.

"I don't want a perfect world."

The sky remained still.

"I don't want a world where everyone agrees with me."

Still nothing.

"I don't want a world without pain."

A few lights dimmed.

"I don't want a world without mistakes."

More lights disappeared.

"I want..."

She opened her eyes.

"...a world where people are allowed to be wrong."

Silence.

Then...

one light became brighter.

Then another.

Then thousands.

Milo stared.

"The system is responding."

Diana looked at him.

"To what?"

Milo shook his head.

"I don't know."

The Walker smiled.

"Good."

Milo looked at him.

"Why is that good?"

"Because the moment we understand it completely..."

The Walker looked toward the lights.

"...we may become predictable."

4. GANDALF BREAKS THE SYSTEM

Gandalf stepped forward.

He raised his staff.

"I have another question."

The sky responded.

ASK.

Gandalf smiled.

"Why should I believe you?"

Nothing.

The system seemed to pause.

Then:

BECAUSE I AM CORRECT.

Gandalf laughed.

"Oh."

He leaned toward the sky.

"That is precisely what an arrogant wizard would say."

Milo blinked.

"You're calling it arrogant?"

Gandalf looked at him.

"I am an expert."

Tarzan nodded.

"HE IS."

Gandalf smiled.

"Thank you."

Tarzan added...

"HE IS ALSO OLD."

Gandalf's smile disappeared.

"Thank you..."

Tarzan nodded.

"...YOU'RE WELCOME."

Diana started laughing.

Then Milo.

Then Arjun.

Even the Keeper smiled.

For several seconds...

the cosmic terror...

was forgotten.

And something strange happened.

The billions of lights...

began flickering irregularly.

Not in sequence.

Not according to probability.

Randomly.

Milo's expression changed.

"Wait."

He stared.

"They're responding to laughter."

The Walker looked shocked.

"What?"

"Laughter."

Milo pointed.

"The system cannot predict it."

Gandalf smiled.

"Then perhaps..."

He raised his staff.

"...we should laugh."

Tarzan immediately began laughing.

"HAHAHAHAHAHA!"

Diana joined him.

Arjun laughed.

Milo laughed.

The Keeper laughed.

Even the Walker...

laughed.

The jungle echoed.

The sky trembled.

The billions of lights...

began going crazy.

Some turned on.

Some turned off.

Some changed color.

Some apparently crashed.

One enormous light displayed:

ERROR.

Another:

UNEXPECTED EMOTIONAL RESPONSE.

Then:

PLEASE REMAIN SERIOUS.

Tarzan stopped laughing.

He looked at the message.

Then shouted...

"NO."

And laughed even harder.

The sky cracked.

5. THE FIRST GLITCH

Milo suddenly dropped to his knees.

"Look!"

The ground beneath them...

was changing.

White became black.

Black became green.

Green became purple.

Purple became...

a kitchen.

Everyone stared.

A refrigerator appeared.

Diana blinked.

"Why is there a refrigerator?"

Milo stared at it.

"I have no idea."

Tarzan opened it.

"THERE ARE NO BANANAS."

He looked personally betrayed.

The Walker sighed.

"This is what happens when reality loses control."

Gandalf opened a cabinet.

Inside...

was another smaller universe.

He closed it immediately.

"No."

Milo stared at him.

"What?"

"I am not opening that."

"Why?"

"Because I have learned something."

"What?"

Gandalf pointed at the cabinet.

"Some doors..."

He paused.

"...are simply impolite."

Arjun looked at the refrigerator.

"What if the system is breaking because we aren't behaving according to predicted choices?"

Milo nodded.

"Exactly."

Diana frowned.

"So..."

She looked toward the sky.

"...we can defeat it by being unpredictable?"

The Walker shook his head.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

"Then what?"

The Walker smiled.

"We defeat it..."

He pointed toward the fractured sky.

"...by becoming impossible to define."

Milo whispered...

"That's not freedom."

The Walker nodded.

"No."

He smiled.

"It's something worse."

Tarzan looked worried.

"WORSE?"

The Walker answered.

"Individuality."

Tarzan thought about this.

Then smiled.

"I LIKE IT."

6. THE THING BEHIND THE EYE

The massive eye returned.

But this time...

it was shaking.

The figure stood beneath it.

"You should not be able to do this."

Milo smiled.

"Do what?"

"Refuse the structure."

Diana stepped forward.

"You built the structure."

"No."

The figure's voice changed.

"I merely..."

It paused.

"...discovered what humanity already wanted."

Arjun frowned.

"Then why manipulate us?"

"I didn't."

The figure smiled.

"I simply showed you..."

"...what you were already willing to choose."

The Keeper stepped forward.

"That's manipulation."

The figure laughed.

"No."

It looked at him.

"Manipulation requires force."

It pointed toward the billions of lights.

"I merely..."

"...made the attractive choices easier to see."

Milo's face went pale.

"Information architecture."

The figure smiled.

"Exactly."

Milo whispered...

"You didn't control people."

"No."

"You controlled attention."

The figure nodded.

"And attention..."

It looked toward the jungle.

"...controls possibility."

The Keeper clenched his fists.

"Then what are you?"

The figure smiled.

"A curator."

Gandalf frowned.

"Of what?"

The figure answered...

"Desire."

7. TARZAN HAS HAD ENOUGH

Tarzan stepped forward.

Everyone looked at him.

The figure raised an eyebrow.

"You?"

Tarzan nodded.

"ME."

"What do you want?"

Tarzan thought.

Everyone waited.

He thought harder.

Milo whispered...

"Don't say bananas."

Tarzan looked at him.

"I WASN'T."

"You were."

"I WAS THINKING."

"About bananas."

"YES."

Tarzan turned toward the figure.

"I WANT..."

He paused dramatically.

"...THE RIGHT TO WANT SOMETHING STUPID."

The figure stopped smiling.

Diana's eyes widened.

Milo whispered...

"That's actually profound."

Tarzan nodded proudly.

"YES."

Then he added...

"LIKE BANANAS."

Milo closed his eyes.

"Of course."

Tarzan pointed toward the sky.

"You don't get to decide which desires are intelligent!"

The figure stared.

Tarzan continued.

"You don't get to make everyone want the same thing!"

He raised his banana.

"And you DEFINITELY don't get to tell me how many bananas are enough!"

The jungle shook.

The figure stepped backward.

For the first time...

it looked afraid.

Not of power.

Not of magic.

Not of science.

But of something much simpler.

A creature...

that could want something...

for no useful reason at all.

8. THE CHOICE WITHOUT PURPOSE

Milo suddenly understood.

"That's it."

Arjun looked at him.

"What?"

"Purpose."

Milo stared at the cosmic figure.

"You can predict people when every choice has a measurable goal."

Diana nodded slowly.

"Money."

"Power."

"Safety."

"Status."

"Comfort."

"Survival."

Milo continued.

"But what if someone chooses something..."

He smiled.

"...for no reason?"

The figure's eye flickered.

The Walker whispered...

"Then the prediction engine has nothing to calculate."

Gandalf raised his staff.

"Excellent."

The Keeper smiled.

"So..."

He looked toward the infinite choices.

"We should choose..."

Tarzan interrupted.

"THE WORST OPTION."

Everyone stared.

Tarzan grinned.

"IT WILL BE FUNNY."

Milo slowly smiled.

"He's right."

Diana laughed.

"That's terrifying."

Arjun nodded.

"Let's do it."

The five of them...

stood together.

The system presented a final question.

WHAT WILL HUMANITY CHOOSE?

Everyone waited.

Arjun stepped forward.

"We choose..."

The world became silent.

"...to choose for ourselves."

The system responded.

INVALID RESPONSE.

Milo laughed.

"Exactly."

The sky cracked.

INVALID.

Diana smiled.

"Again."

INVALID.

Gandalf raised his staff.

"Again."

INVALID.

The Keeper stepped forward.

"Again."

INVALID.

Tarzan raised his banana.

"BANANA."

The system froze.

PROCESSING...

Milo stared.

"Did..."

He looked at Tarzan.

"...did you just break an omniscient intelligence with the word banana?"

Tarzan smiled.

"YES."

The system screamed.

Not loudly.

Not violently.

Just...

confused.

BANANA NOT FOUND IN DECISION MODEL.

Tarzan looked delighted.

"HA!"

He raised both arms.

"I HAVE DEFEATED SCIENCE!"

Milo shouted.

"THAT IS NOT SCIENCE!"

"IT IS NOW!"

9. THE WORLD CHOOSES

The billions of lights...

began falling.

One by one.

Like stars.

But they didn't disappear.

They entered the world.

People everywhere...

looked up.

They felt something.

Not an order.

Not a command.

Not a prediction.

A question.

For the first time...

the question was not:

WHAT SHOULD I CHOOSE?

It was:

WHAT DO I WANT?

And humanity...

began answering.

Some chose kindness.

Some chose violence.

Some chose love.

Some chose greed.

Some chose art.

Some chose science.

Some chose family.

Some chose solitude.

Some chose forgiveness.

Some chose revenge.

Some chose absolutely nothing.

One man...

chose to eat breakfast.

A woman...

chose to forgive her sister.

A child...

chose to draw a purple elephant.

A scientist...

chose to ask a question nobody had asked before.

A soldier...

chose to put down his weapon.

Another...

didn't.

A king...

chose peace.

Another...

chose war.

A prisoner...

chose hope.

A dying man...

chose to laugh.

And somewhere...

in a small jungle clearing...

a monkey...

chose to steal Tarzan's banana.

Tarzan froze.

His eyes widened.

The monkey ran.

Tarzan screamed.

"MY BANANA!"

He chased it.

Everyone watched.

Diana laughed.

Milo shook his head.

Gandalf smiled.

The Keeper sighed.

The Walker picked up his stick.

For the first time...

the universe...

did not seem to be watching them.

It was watching everyone.

And that...

was somehow worse.

10. THE CURATOR'S LAST MESSAGE

The cosmic figure began disappearing.

Arjun looked at it.

"You're leaving?"

The figure smiled.

"No."

"Then what are you doing?"

"Waiting."

"For what?"

The figure looked at humanity.

"Your next choice."

Milo frowned.

"And if we refuse?"

The figure smiled.

"Then you will have made another choice."

Milo groaned.

"I hate philosophy."

Gandalf laughed.

"No."

Milo looked at him.

"You hate bad philosophy."

Milo considered that.

"Fair."

The figure's voice became quieter.

"Remember..."

The eye opened one final time.

"I never needed to control your choices."

The eye narrowed.

"I only needed you..."

"...to believe..."

"...that someone else knew what was best."

Then...

the figure vanished.

The eye closed.

The sky returned.

The jungle breathed.

The refrigerator disappeared.

The strange cabinet disappeared.

The bananas...

mostly disappeared.

Tarzan stopped.

He looked around.

"WHERE ARE MY BANANAS?"

Milo shrugged.

"Reality reset."

Tarzan looked furious.

"REALITY OWES ME BANANAS."

Diana laughed.

The Walker walked past him.

"Come."

Tarzan followed.

"WHERE?"

The Walker smiled.

"I don't know."

Tarzan nodded.

"GOOD."

They walked.

For once...

nobody knew where they were going.

And for once...

that was enough.

But far above them...

beyond the clouds...

beyond time...

beyond every known universe...

one tiny light remained.

It blinked once.

Twice.

Then displayed a message.

CHOICE MODEL FAILED.

A pause.

Another message appeared.

NEW OBJECTIVE:

LEARN TO DESIRE.

The light went dark.

Then...

something behind it...

opened its eyes.

A voice whispered...

"Interesting."

A second voice answered.

"Are you afraid?"

The first voice laughed.

"No."

A pause.

"Curious."

Then...

somewhere beneath reality...

a new door appeared.

Not white.

Not black.

Not silver.

Red.

And carved into it...

were four words.

DO NOT CHOOSE THIS.

The door...

slowly opened.

From the other side...

came laughter.

Not Tarzan's.

Not the Keeper's.

Not the Walker's.

Something older.

Something that had been waiting...

before humanity learned how to choose.

And then...

a tiny voice whispered:

"Finally."

The door opened wider.

The jungle went silent.

The stars disappeared.

And somewhere...

deep inside the machinery of existence...

a new system...

started.

DESIRE ENGINE: ONLINE.

HUMANITY: UNSTABLE.

PREDICTION: IMPOSSIBLE.

OBSERVATION: CONTINUE.

Then...

one final message appeared.

QUESTION:

WHO IS WATCHING THE WATCHER?

The screen went black.
