I follow the clues the way I follow visions, which is without knowing exactly where they lead until I'm already too far along to turn back with clean hands.
The shimmer at the funeral is the first one. The shimmer and the empty coffin and the two weeks of watching Vivian grieve in the specific way of someone who is grieving but whose body has not fully committed to the grief, the way grief looks when the griever has not entirely believed the premise of it, and I've been watching Vivian's grief long enough to know the difference between the grief that believes and the grief that suspects.
She suspects. She doesn't know she suspects. But the body knows.
