CHASE
I'm three drinks deep when I hear the door to my penthouse open.
No knock. No warning. Just the sound of locks disengaging and footsteps on marble.
I don't turn around. Don't reach for my phone to call security. Because I already know who it is.
"Breaking and entering is illegal," I say. "Even for mothers."
"I have a key." Helena's voice comes from behind me. "I kept it. From before."
"Before you disappeared for six years."
"Before your father made me disappear." She walks into my line of sight. Still wearing the same coat from the office. Like she's been wandering Manhattan all evening. "We need to talk."
"We talked. At the office. Before you did whatever that was with the lights."
"That was just a warning. A glimpse." She sets her purse down on my coffee table. Makes herself at home. "What we need to discuss is far more serious."
