Chapter 58 - VMS Training (1)

CHAPTER 56

After the aspect class, Ray was taken to the infirmary to get checked, and luckily, the female healer was able to pop his broken bones back into place.

And just in time for the VMS training scheduled in a few minutes.

Rushing, Ray found himself on the open field usually used for their physical training every morning.

Right there, he could finally see Kai standing beside Van.

'Pheew. He is okay.' He heaved a sigh of relief as he sauntered over and stood beside the grade six meta.

This put Kai in the middle of the two best friends.

"Oh hey~ where were you?" Kai asked in his usual cheerful voice, causing Van to lean forward to stare at Ray.

"... Was in the infirmary." Ray replied calmly, causing Kai's eyebrows to flare.

Kai could be seen visibly grinding his teeth, his eyes flashing a dangerous glint at the words Ray had said.

"Who was it?" he said in a low, threatening growl.

'Huh?' Ray raised an eyebrow as he looked up to stare at the fury written across his roomie's face.

Realising his mistake, he quickly began waving his hands in front of him.

"Oh no no no. It wasn't a case of bullying. I got injured in the combat class, hence I was required to visit the nurse."

This didn't seem to calm Kai down, as he pierced Ray with a sharp stare.

"That's the truth?"

"Mhm." Ray nodded, and only then did Kai exhale calmly, returning to his usual cheerful self.

'What's wrong with him? Why is he so possessive over me?'

Ray was just about to ask a question as his mouth parted, but before he could say anything, the instructor could be seen arriving.

The sound of wheels creaking echoed through the air, causing everybody to instantly shut up.

Turning around, they could see the instructor walking forward, and behind him were five huge crates rolling along without being pushed or touched.

'Technologia.'

After a few steps, the instructor stopped, and so did the crates, as they came to rest a few feet away from him in a straight line.

"Attention, Aspirants!" he shouted, his voice booming.

Almost immediately, all Aspirants stood upright—chin up, hands behind their backs, legs shuffled together as straight as a morning wood.

"Give your hearts!"

Immediately, all the Aspirants pressed three fingers across their chests—specifically where their hearts would be in a military-style salute.

The sound of the slam against their chests echoed sharply, like guns hitting the ground.

"Space out. Give yourselves a three-metre space from the next person in front and beside you now!"

The Aspirants hurried to accomplish the task, quietly shuffling around to give each other space.

Now, three metres of space was in front of Ray and also beside him on either flank, as he stood proud.

Unflinching. Calm.

Satisfied, the instructor nodded, able to easily see the students from where he stood.

But for better visibility…

The ground beneath his feet began rumbling like the growls of a hungry beast.

Within the blink of an eye, a huge mound of earth rose up, with the instructor atop it and the crates following behind.

When he rose two metres above the ground, the rumbling stopped, granting him clear visibility over the Aspirants, all of whom stared nervously—all except Ray, Kai, Trisha, and another guy.

"... Like I informed you all the day before, and even two weeks ago, we will be focusing on a special gear training," said the instructor, his gaze sweeping over the Aspirants, who maintained their straight posture.

"The physical training you all underwent for two weeks straight, for two hours each day, was preparing you for this.

I was trying to build your stamina for the past fourteen days.

And take note: the physical training won't end even with this gear training. We will continue until you graduate from the Corps a year from now."

"...."

Silence swept across the field as only the soft thudding of heartbeats could be heard, everyone listening attentively.

Chloe could be seen in the middle of the crowd, standing nervously while clutching her hands behind her back tightly.

"... And what is this gear training, you might be wondering? This training is very important for all Aspirants to undergo, as without it, your abilities would be literally useless against the towering Aberrants."

After a brief pause, the instructor pointed downwards—to his legs, which were clad in a special pair of boots.

Seeing the boots, Ray was quick to remember where he had seen them before.

'Wasn't it the same boots uncle Han wore when he saved me? Wait… uncle Han! How is he? Did he manage to escape…'

His thoughts were cut short by the instructor's voice.

"Behind me are crates filled with these boots, which will now be distributed to you all."

Snap—!

The man clicked his fingers together, and immediately the crates creaked open without anybody touching them.

One by one, pairs of boots emerged, floating in the air.

They glided gracefully toward the Aspirants, falling neatly into their outstretched hands, one pair after another.

Ray held his hands out, and his own pair of boots landed perfectly.

The design of the boots was somewhat unique and intricate, almost giving him a headache just to stare at it.

The boots were matte black and reached up to the mid-calf when worn.

Reinforced plating lined the heels, calves, and ankle joints, with a subtle angular design—military-style, practical and not flashy.

Three small circular vents were fitted neatly at the back of each heel, and thin slits ran along the outer and inner sides of each boot.

A bulging armored ridge ran along the back of the lower calf, which, as uncle Han once explained, held compressed gas cartridges—the main power source for the boots.

Turning them over, Ray noticed a slightly glowing metallic ring around the ankle joint.

Then, looking at the soles, he saw shining metallic plates embedded into the bottom.

Heavens knew what exactly they were used for.

He shrugged.

Even with all these heavy components making up the boots, they were not heavy at all. They were extremely light, designed for high-speed movements and free manoeuvres.

This was the Vector Mobility System… VMS for short!

"And today, you all will be learning how to use these boots. So suit up, Aspirants! Things are about to get bumpy."
