His voice was full of righteous indignation as he said, "The most I took was 50%. In many cases, I took as little as 30%. How did it become taking up to 90%?"
"There is something wrong with those Life Value Meters. If I will be blamed for something, it should be for something I did."

It was true that he had stolen lifespan from his disciples, but it wasn't as bad as the Life Value Meters made his theft out to be. So he was, at best, an opportunistic thief; he wasn't the evil villain they made him out to be.
He had expected the Life Value Meters to expose his crimes, but it was just too much.
He said with determination, "I can't let this stand. I must fight fire with fire."
"Since they can get the Life Value Meters, I can get them too. And since they can tamper with the Life Value Meters, I can tamper with them too. Let's see who can lie the hardest."
