Hughes was leaning sideways on another hospital bed, his right hand carefully bandaged and suspended in front of his chest by a white cloth sling. His face was slightly pale from blood loss, but his smile remained as arrogant as usual.
"I heard about the rumors related to you in the circle." Hughes shrugged, acting indifferent.
"I am a pragmatist; I don't believe in those unlucky curses or whatever."
"Didn't you not dare look? Just now you said you closed your eyes." Alex mumbled, his hand still tightly holding the quilt edge.
"That attitude of yours... Is this the mark of some Deity?" Hughes suddenly changed his tone, asking directly, his gaze sharper.
"I once saw similar records in the church library; the mark of an Ancient God can make an Extraordinary person unstable, even go mad and mutate."
Alex's eyes lit up, curiosity overtaking fear.
"Where is it? What is the name of that book?"
"You answer my question first. Is it or not?" Hughes wasn't easily distracted.
