Chapter 57: September 1st
September 1st. The opening day of the Yorknew Auction.
Ronin's target was the Underground Auction held tonight.
If this were the Phantom Troupe's operation, everyone attending would be slaughtered.
But Ronin wasn't a mass murderer. His target was the merchandise, not the people.
The appearance of Uvogin and his crew yesterday provided the perfect cover. Ronin intended to use it.
He didn't know the specifics of Uvogin's new arm, but he could imitate the Big Bang Impact perfectly.
"It's a pity we don't have a spatial ability. It would make looting the entire vault much easier," Kurapika lamented during the planning phase.
Ronin thought of Shizuku.
At this point in the timeline, Shizuku should be a new recruit or about to join. Her ability, Blinky (Deme-chan), was incredibly useful for cleaning up.
But finding her was the problem. If she was from Meteor City, recruiting her was impossible.
Shizuku's personality was manageable—forgetful, detached, morally ambiguous, cute but cuttingly blunt. The only thing she never forgot were the Troupe's rules. She adhered to them strictly.
Her trust in Chrollo was absolute. If that bond was forged in Meteor City, Ronin had no chance.
If she joined later, there might have been a window. But Ronin wasn't going to trawl through the garbage heaps of Meteor City to find her.
So, any interaction with Shizuku was left to fate.
If she had joined the Troupe, even if she hadn't participated in the Kurta Massacre, Ronin wouldn't hesitate to kill her when the time came.
Without a vacuum cleaner, they would do it the old-fashioned way.
Around 8:00 PM, Ronin stepped out of the car. Using Transformation Jutsu, he disguised himself as a Mafia security guard and walked calmly into the Cemetery Building.
Kurapika drove the car forward and parked in front of the hotel opposite the building.
The Underground Auction was entirely run by the Mafia.
Buyers could bring a maximum of three people. Security inside was handled exclusively by the hosting Mafia family.
This was the highest level of security in Yorknew. Attacking this place meant declaring war on the entire global Mafia community.
When Ronin infiltrated, the venue was already packed.
Guests were dressed in opulent finery, resembling a high-society ball. Bodyguards were everywhere, but Nen users among them were rare.
Ronin didn't stop. He headed straight for the underground vault where the auction items were stored.
It went smoothly until he was asked for ID at the checkpoint.
Ronin dropped the act.
His appearance shifted instantly. The generic guard vanished, replaced by a towering figure with massive burn scars, looking like a demon from hell.
Uvogin.
The slaughter began.
The Mafia guards guarding the vault were heavily armed. But whether it was pistol rounds or rifle fire, the bullets simply pinged off Ronin's skin.
Cling! Clang!
Bullets rained onto the floor as he walked. The Mafia members stared in shock.
Ronin's physical durability wasn't quite at the level of Uvogin three years later (Yorknew Arc), but tanking small arms fire was effortless.
Maybe he needed more training to tank a bazooka, but he was close.
The Weighted Boulder Jutsu training had paid off beyond his expectations.
Ronin casually caught a falling bullet, flicked his finger, and sent it flying back with the force of a gunshot. A guard dropped dead with a hole in his forehead.
He walked like a god of war.
By the time he reached the massive steel vault door, no one was left standing.
He hadn't killed everyone; he left a few alive as witnesses.
Aura gathered on his fist. Mimicking the mechanics of the Big Bang Impact, he slammed his fist into the heavy security door.
BOOM!
A massive fist imprint appeared on the metal, the entire door caving inward.
He didn't use Ninjutsu. Just pure, brute-force Enhancement.
By the tenth punch, the door held, but the reinforced concrete wall around it gave way. The metal frame tore out of the masonry with a screeching groan.
The surviving guards watched, eyes wide with horror. Their minds went blank.
Is that even human?
Who is that monster?
Ronin kicked the fallen door aside and walked into the vault.
He pulled out two large duffel bags he had prepared. He swiftly swept valuable items off the shelves.
His primary target was, of course, the Scarlet Eyes.
Unfortunately, there was only one pair here.
According to their intel, three pairs were being sold at the Underground Auction, but they were auctioned on different days.
Another pair was at the Southernpiece Auction House.
Best case scenario, Ronin could secure four pairs in Yorknew.
Absorbing the eyes would take time, and the alarms were already blaring outside.
Ronin packed the bags full. He walked out of the vault but didn't head upstairs immediately.
In a blind spot, he cast Shadow Clone Jutsu.
The clone took one bag and headed for the main entrance. The real Ronin took the bag with the Scarlet Eyes and ran up the stairs.
Reaching the fifth floor unnoticed, Ronin opened a window. He cast Earth Style: Ultralight-Weight Rock Technique on himself.
Massive amounts of Chakra burned as he defied gravity, floating out of the window and into the night sky.
Meanwhile, at the main entrance, gunfire and explosions erupted.
The Mafia had completely surrounded Ronin's Shadow Clone.
Trapped in the encirclement were three other people: Uvogin, Nobunaga, and Machi, dressed in suits for the auction.
The Shadow Clone, carrying a massive bag, had transformed again.
He now looked exactly like Franklin.
Some perceptive Mafia members noticed discrepancies, but the surviving guards from the vault screamed their testimony.
"That's him! The guy with the scars! He tore the vault door off!"
With the "Franklin" clone standing next to the real Uvogin, the Mafia didn't hesitate. They opened fire on the whole group.
