Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Copper Coins Serve as a Warning; Dark Clouds Approach from the West

The previous night, at home, Shin burned incense and calmed his mind.

With solemn focus, he performed a divination using three ancient copper coins, following the most basic Six Lines method from the Book of Changes.

He did not intend to peer into Heavenly Secrets—he was well aware he lacked that level of ability.

Instead, his goal was to establish a clear "imagery" within his mind, creating a reasonable foundation for today's "warning."

The resulting hexagram was, naturally, obscure and difficult to interpret.

But Shin deliberately extracted and memorized several suitably vague images: haze, the West, entrapment, wickedness.

This ancient ritual would serve as justification for a "sudden premonition."

The Next Day – Kuoh Academy, Second Year Class B

The classroom buzzed with noise during break. Students gathered in small groups—chatting, scrolling on their phones, or rushing through unfinished homework.

Shin sat alone by the window, a mathematics textbook open before him. His eyes, however, were unfocused.

His brows were slightly furrowed. A faint trace of exhaustion and anxiety lingered in his expression—as if weighed down by worry.

His fingertips tapped lightly against the desk.

Restless.

The timing was right.

He took a quiet breath, as though bracing himself.

While his classmates were only half-paying attention, he reached into his backpack and retrieved a small, dark velvet pouch.

That action immediately drew curiosity.

"Classmate Shin, what's that?" a girl nearby leaned over and asked.

Shin looked up and offered a slightly forced smile.

"Just… some small family heirlooms."

"I've been feeling uneasy lately. I thought I'd take a quick look."

His tone carried a subtle reserve—the kind of quiet mystique people associated with "Eastern traditions."

Under several curious gazes, he slowly opened the pouch and poured out three smooth bronze coins.

Ancient runes were faintly engraved on their surfaces. Even at a glance, they were clearly not modern replicas.

Without burning incense or entering deep meditation like the night before, he simply cupped the coins in his palm and closed his eyes.

He shook them lightly, as if at random, silently forming a vague request in his heart—regarding the safety of the academy.

Then he gently cast them onto the velvet cloth spread across his desk.

Clink. Clink.

The coins settled into a specific arrangement.

Shin's gaze fell upon them instantly. His brows tightened further.

He extended a finger, tracing the pattern without touching it. His lips moved faintly, as if reciting some ancient incantation under his breath.

The surrounding students were completely captivated.

In an academy where Devils, Fallen Angels, and sacred artifacts were not mere myths, an Eastern divination ritual inspired curiosity—not ridicule.

After a moment, Shin's breathing faltered slightly. His face paled.

He suddenly looked up, alarm flickering in his eyes.

"…Haze is gathering. Evil spirits rise in secret… The Western direction… there may be catastrophe…"

His voice was low—but perfectly audible.

The unease in his tone made the previously amused classmates feel an inexplicable chill.

"The West?"

"Catastrophe?"

"Shin, what does that mean?"

A male classmate couldn't help asking.

Seeing that the desired effect had been achieved, Shin seemed to snap out of his trance. He quickly gathered the coins and forced a smile.

"It's nothing. Just an old divination game. Don't take it seriously."

"Maybe I'm just overthinking."

But his pale face and solemn expression contradicted his words entirely.

The more he tried to dismiss it, the more serious it seemed.

Right then, the bell rang—mercifully interrupting the questions.

Students reluctantly returned to their seats, though glances toward Shin were now filled with speculation.

He quietly put away the pouch and turned to look out the window—toward the western side of the academy.

The worry on his face lingered.

Seven parts performance.

Three parts genuine concern.

He truly feared for Asia.

And he was deeply wary of Raynare's power.

This public "warning" was like tossing a stone into still water. The ripples would spread.

Lunch Break – Occult Research Club

Inside the Occult Research Club room, Rias listened as Tsubaki Shinra delivered her report.

Tsubaki adjusted her glasses.

"President, a member of the Student Council Disciplinary Committee observed Shin, the transfer student from Second Year Class B, conducting a public Eastern divination ritual during the morning break."

"Oh?"

A glimmer of interest flashed in Rias's crimson eyes.

"What is our Advisor doing now?"

"And what was the result?"

She held a natural curiosity toward anything Shin did involving Eastern mysticism.

"According to eyewitness accounts," Tsubaki continued methodically, "he used three ancient bronze coins and concluded that 'Haze is gathering. Evil spirits rise in secret. In the Western direction, there may be catastrophe.' He appeared deeply concerned."

"Haze gathering… trouble in the West…"

The playful curve of Rias's lips faded. A sharp glint flashed in her emerald eyes.

She immediately recalled Shin's statement yesterday in the clubroom—that a Sacred Gear under duress might emit distorted and painful energy fluctuations.

Combined with this warning, an ominous premonition seized her.

"The West…"

She rose swiftly and approached the detailed map of Kuoh Town pinned to the wall.

Her finger pressed against a marked area.

"That region includes the abandoned church."

"Any recent anomaly reports?"

Tsubaki checked her tablet immediately.

"Yes. There have been indirect complaints. Local residents report strange noises at night and a faint sense of discomfort."

"Additionally, Asia Argento—the blonde transfer student who has interacted with Shin—is registered as residing in a church apartment in that district."

The pieces aligned like gears locking into place.

Shin's Sacred Gear theory.

Shin's divination warning.

Reports of disturbances at the abandoned church.

Asia Argento's residence.

Rias's expression hardened completely.

"Notify Akeno, Yuto, and Koneko immediately."

Her voice was calm—but absolute.

"Tell them to drop everything and assemble here at once."

"At the same time, mobilize Student Council resources. I want a full energy fluctuation monitoring report on the abandoned church and its surroundings within thirty minutes."

"And all records of Asia Argento's movements over the past twenty-four hours."

"Yes, President."

Tsubaki bowed and moved at once.

Rias stood alone before the map, her red hair swaying faintly with the shift in her aura.

"A Fallen Angel… daring to act so brazenly on my territory."

Her voice turned cold.

"And Shin… was your 'divination' truly coincidence, or…"

She recalled his gentle expression—always calm, always slightly distant.

If it was coincidence, his intuition was terrifying.

If it wasn't…

Then the secrets he carried ran far deeper than she had imagined.

Either way, his warning had become the final trigger.

The Occult Research Club—long calm and precise—began moving at full speed.

Its blade pointed directly toward the ominous haze rising from the west.

A storm was coming.

And the spark that lit the fuse began with three ancient copper coins…

And a Transmigrator's carefully woven

"premonition."
