General Ross stared at the terminated call, his mind blank with disbelief.
Was that really Captain America?
Would Captain America talk like that?
Shouldn't he be the symbol of selfless devotion to his country and its people? Something didn't feel right.
Maybe he had just opened the call the wrong way?
In doubt, General Ross called Nick Fury again, only to confirm that the man he had spoken to really was Captain America — Steve Rogers himself. But Fury admitted he was a bit different now.
After being frozen for seventy years, Steve wasn't exactly the same man he used to be.
"Steve, huh? Without Butcher Zhang, I guess we'll just have to eat hairy pigs," Ross muttered.
Opening his contacts list, Ross reviewed the names of elite U.S. Marine special forces — the best of the best.
To take down the Hulk, he needed soldiers who could restrain the creature and survive long enough to use the sonic weapons.
If Captain America refused to join them, then fine.
He would just create his own American team.
A few days later, Bruce Banner, resting in a Brazilian slum, suddenly opened his eyes. Something felt wrong.
Then his phone buzzed. A text message.
It was from the mysterious contact who had received his blood sample before — someone calling himself Dr. Blue.
Dr. Blue claimed he might have found a way to cure Banner but needed data from the original experiment for comparison.
That left Banner conflicted. All of his experiment data was still in university labs back in the U.S.
His chance for salvation was right in front of him — but it meant going home.
Just then, footsteps echoed above him.
A special forces team had surrounded the building, forming a V-shaped perimeter around his small apartment.
Inside an armored vehicle nearby, General Ross directed the operation.
"Attention all units, prepare for action!" he ordered.
Thunk! Thunk! Thunk!
Anesthetic darts pierced the bed sheets and embedded in the wooden frame — but when the soldiers lifted the covers, the bed was empty.
Banner had already escaped through the window, sliding down a rope into the home of a female factory worker.
The woman remembered him — he had once saved her from a group of harassers — and despite the awkward situation (Banner was just out of the shower), she still helped him hide.
Otherwise, he'd have been thrown out and branded a pervert.
Far away, Steve Rogers and Tony Stark were watching everything unfold through binoculars.
Tony sipped a glass of vegetable juice, his face pale from palladium poisoning. The old arc reactor in his chest was still leaking toxins into his bloodstream.
It was a slow, painful death, but Tony had accepted it. He didn't want anyone's help — not yet.
"You really think the Hulk is that scary?" he asked casually.
Steve leaned back, eyes still on the scene. "He's tough. You might not beat him, but don't feel bad about it. The Hulk isn't someone you mess with easily. How about we bet on how many soldiers will die this time?"
Steve had been dragged into this operation by Fury after a long argument. General Ross still held a grudge from that earlier phone call, so Steve had been placed on the perimeter — basically sidelined.
"Oh? You're betting?" Tony smirked. "How many?"
"Between two hundred and five hundred."
"Deal. What's the wager?"
"Loser buys late-night barbecue. I heard there's a great place nearby."
While they joked, Banner was trying to escape with the help of the same factory worker.
But a soldier spotted him. Sprinting through narrow alleyways lined with hanging laundry, the soldier lifted the clothes to find—
A six-story drop.
He screamed and fell, crashing to the ground below.
Banner, panicked, ran back to the soda factory, hoping to slip out through the back door and reach the docks. From there, he could flee by water and maybe make it to the U.S.
But fate wasn't kind.
Five thugs appeared — the same ones who had harassed the factory worker earlier.
"Kill him!" one shouted.
Banner ran, weaving through crowds before bursting into the factory.
Three thugs blocked the back exit with steel pipes, while two more trapped him from behind.
"Think you can steal my woman?!" one shouted. "Beat him to death!"
Banner fought back using a few martial arts moves he'd learned, knocking one down — but was soon overwhelmed and struck in the head with an iron rod.
He was bleeding badly when they threw him off the third-floor platform.
At that moment, the special forces arrived, led by the battle-hardened soldier Emil Blonsky.
"Hah! He's dead now!" one thug sneered.
"ROAR!"
A monstrous growl erupted from the shadows. A pair of glowing green eyes emerged from the darkness.
"Target located!" Blonsky barked.
A split second later, one of the thugs was hurled through metal shelves, crashing into a concrete wall — bones twisted unnaturally.
One by one, the others were crushed, smashed, or thrown like rag dolls.
The special forces opened fire, the staccato of assault rifles echoing through the factory.
Stun grenades exploded, their blinding light illuminating the green giant.
But the tranquilizer rounds clattered harmlessly off his skin.
The Hulk turned toward the soldiers with a terrifying grin.
Boom!
He kicked a massive oil tank — nearly three tons of metal — sending it flying through power lines. Electricity sparked and soldiers screamed. Two were crushed instantly against the wall, their bodies pinned beneath the tank.
Even Tony Stark gasped. "Damn… so that's Gamma radiation for you."
Now he finally understood what Fury had meant by Gamma Hazard.
Compared to this, radioactive spiders and mutants seemed like child's play.
And yet, instead of fear, Tony felt exhilarated. The world was getting more and more interesting.
He glanced at Steve — who was now sitting comfortably, eating barbecue skewers and sipping beer, eyes glued to the chaos like it was a movie.
Tony raised an eyebrow.
"Is this really Captain America?"
Where was his compassion? His heroic drive to lead by example?
Apparently, even the Star-Spangled Man could enjoy a good show.
