I froze when I heard the loud scream on arrival at the entrance of my homeland and fear gripped me.
Has something happened to Ruby? Or Deborah?
Nothing could dare happen to Peter. I couldn't even dare worry for him because thinking that way would feel sinful of me.
The town was quiet, meaning everyone was at the ritual ground.
Without thinking, I quickly got down my horse and ran as fast as I could. The road felt endless but I kept going until I came to where the crowd had gathered.
I began to push through with my heart racing in fear.
If anything dares to happen to Ruby I will never forgive myself and Lady Bridget will never forgive me. I cannot afford to disappoint her, not when I had left her all alone in the palace to come for her daughter.
Even after leaving the palace, I had felt like returning for Lady Bridget's sake because all my life, that woman has been my safe haven and I, her safe space.
