The night had deepened as the moon and the stars glowed brightly above. The outdoor lamps bathed the entire yard under their warm glow, turning the steam rising from their bowls and cups into soft strands of gold.
But the gentle scene couldn't soften the shock Lucille felt when Ashrik told her the deranged esper's identity.
"She's Helena Chen. The daughter of Robert Chen. He's Genesis' first-in-command. One of its founders."
"D-daughter?" Lucille's voice cracked slightly. The soup spoon in her hand trembled, tapping against the bowl. Her widened eyes reflected her surprise.
Ashrik gave a short nod. "Yes."
Lucille's heartbeat picked up, wildly pounding in her chest. She had assumed that the woman was dangerous, one could tell from the battle she had seen through Ashrik's eyes.
But never did she expect this particular connection, or family lineage.
