Chapter 55 - A SLAP ON THE BRING OF THE STORM

New York still bore the lingering traces of an afternoon rain as Julian Caldwell stepped out of the black car that had ferried him directly from Teterboro Airport.

Julian entered the pavilion with hurried strides. The soothing scent of lavender welcomed him, yet the atmosphere within the room felt suffocatingly tense. Atop a rocking chair near the large window sat Grandma Victoria. Her back was rod-straight, and her piercing eyes were fixed intently on the door.

"I'm home, Grandma," Julian said, his voice hoarse, nearly failing him.

He stepped closer, reaching for his grandmother's hand to kiss it, but a swift motion sliced through the air.

SLAP!

The sound of the strike echoed through the silent room. Julian's head snapped to the side, his cheek reddening instantly. He remained still, not daring to meet his grandmother's eyes, which now glinted with a flash of pure, unadulterated rage.
