Chapter 6 - TANGLED THREADS

Chapter 6: Tangled Threads

One week had passed since the night at The Plaza, yet the echo of Selena Harrington's voice still seemed to reverberate against the tall walls of Victoria's residence. New York appeared calm beneath the warming veil of spring, but inside the luxurious townhouse, the air felt like the surface of a frozen lake, clear above, yet hiding deadly cold currents beneath.

Scarlett moved through her days in a kind of trance. Each morning, she woke up in Carmel-by-the-Sea in her dreams, only to realize she was waking in Manhattan to a far more complicated reality. Hope and anxiety wrestled in her chest every time her phone vibrated. Meanwhile, Julian became a quieter figure. He often spent long hours in his study, avoiding prolonged eye contact with Scarlett, as if the girl's honey-brown eyes were mirrors reflecting the inner chaos he refused to acknowledge.

News from Broadway

The silence broke on a cloudy Tuesday afternoon. Scarlett was sitting in the library, trying to focus on a Stanislavski acting technique book, when her phone screamed against the marble table. An unknown number with a 212 area code.

With trembling hands, she slid the green icon.

"Hello?"

"Is this Scarlett Whitmore?" The voice on the other end sounded efficient and sharp. Arthur Vance's assistant.

"Y-yes, this is Scarlett."

"Congratulations, Scarlett. Arthur Vance has made his decision. The role of Elara in The Silent Heart is yours. The production team will contact your management soon for contract details."

The world seemed to stop spinning. Scarlett froze, her phone nearly slipping from her suddenly weak fingers. Elara. The role was hers. She drew in a long, shaky breath, hot tears beginning to gather in her eyes. She remembered sitting on an intercity bus from California with a worn backpack and a wallet that was later stolen. She remembered the hunger, the insecurity, and the dismissive looks from people in the audition waiting room.

"I made it…" she whispered softly, her voice breaking with emotion. "I really made it."

Victoria, who had just stepped into the library, immediately caught Scarlett's expression. Without needing any explanation, the older woman understood. She walked over and embraced Scarlett with the warmth of a true grandmother.

"I told you, didn't I?" Victoria stroked Scarlett's back, her eyes glistening with pride. "You are a gem, Scarlett. New York just needed a little time to realize it. I am so, so proud of you."

At the doorway, Julian stood still. He had heard everything. His face showed no surprise, he had already recognized Scarlett's talent that night during rehearsal, but something stirred beneath his composed exterior.

"Congratulations," Julian said briefly when Scarlett turned toward him with tear-streaked cheeks.

The response was short, almost cold. Yet inside, Julian felt an overwhelming surge of emotion. He was proud, but at the same time, he was afraid. Scarlett's success meant she would be drawn deeper into his world, a world filled with flashing paparazzi lights and predators like Selena. Julian feared he would no longer be able to control the feelings that were beginning to grow wildly within him.

A New World at JTC Management

Two days later, Scarlett officially stepped into the JTC Management building in Midtown. The office was a manifestation of Julian's power in the entertainment industry, minimalist, modern, with glass walls overlooking the restless movement of Manhattan below.

"Welcome aboard, Scarlett!" A charismatic man in a neatly rolled-sleeve flannel shirt approached them. His smile was wide, his eyes warm. "I'm Jonathan, Julian's personal assistant and handler. But you can call me Jo."

Jonathan shook Scarlett's hand enthusiastically, his gaze scanning her face with genuine admiration. "Wow, Julian wasn't kidding. You have such a… fresh aura. Like morning dew in the middle of New York pollution. You're absolutely beautiful, Scarlett."

Scarlett blushed, feeling awkward under the direct praise. "Thank you, Jo. I still have a lot to learn."

"Oh, don't be modest. With guidance from the stiff man beside you, you'll become a mega star in no time," Jonathan teased, nudging Julian's arm. "Right, Boss? It's rare to see your taste become so… human."

Julian merely snorted, but his eyes narrowed as he watched Jonathan continue to look at Scarlett with interest. A sudden discomfort pierced his chest, a subtle possessiveness he had never felt before.

Why do I care if Jo compliments her? Julian thought irritably. He tried to distract himself by checking his schedule on his tablet, but the corner of his eye remained locked on Scarlett, who was now surrounded by several curious JTC staff members.

"Miss Whitmore, we're very excited to work with you," one of the senior managers said. Scarlett smiled, beginning to feel that she finally belonged. She was no longer a stranger seeking shelter. She was a valuable asset.

A Bomb at the Dinner Table

That evening, Victoria requested a more formal dinner to celebrate Scarlett's success. The table was decorated with white lilies and small candles. The atmosphere at first felt warm. Victoria shared stories about Julian's grandfather's youth, while Scarlett occasionally laughed at Jonathan's remarks, as he had been invited as well.

However, when dessert was served, Victoria placed her silver spoon down with a soft clink that signaled a serious announcement. The room instantly fell silent.

"Scarlett, Julian," Victoria began, her voice calm but authoritative. "This week has proven many things. Scarlett has proven her talent, and Julian… you have proven that you can be a good protector."

Julian frowned, sensing something unsettling. "Grandma, what do you mean?"

Victoria looked at them both with unwavering certainty. "This industry is cruel. Selena has returned, and she will not let Scarlett rise without interference. Scarlett needs protection that is more permanent than just a management contract."

Scarlett held her breath. "Madam?"

"I want the two of you to get married," Victoria said plainly.

Clink. The spoon slipped from Scarlett's hand onto the porcelain plate.

The dining room suddenly felt deprived of oxygen. Scarlett's head spun. Marriage? To Julian Caldwell? The man she had cried over just a week ago because of his coldness? The man who still carried the shadow of Selena Harrington in his eyes?

"Grandma, this is ridiculous!" Julian spoke, his voice heavy with pressure, though he did not appear as shocked as Scarlett. He was too familiar with his grandmother's elegant manipulation. "We're not living in the Middle Ages. You can't just arrange people like this."

"This is not a medieval arrangement, Julian. This is strategy," Victoria replied firmly. "If you marry, Scarlett's position will be untouchable. Selena will not be able to touch her without dealing with the Caldwell family legally. And you, Julian… you need stability to clear your name from the old rumors Selena is starting to dig up again."

"Madam Victoria, I… I can't," Scarlett interrupted, her voice trembling. She looked at Victoria pleadingly. "I appreciate everything you've done, but marriage… it should be for love, not a contract or a strategy."

Victoria looked at Scarlett gently, yet unshaken. "Love can grow, Scarlett. But opportunity and security do not come twice. Think about your career. Think about the dream you just held in your hands. Are you willing to let Selena destroy it in one night?"

Silent Ruin

That night, the peace of the house completely shattered. Scarlett locked herself in her room, sitting on the floor with her knees pulled to her chest. Her life had changed too quickly. From Carmel to New York, from audition to leading role, and now… a planned contract marriage. She felt like a chess piece in Victoria's grand game. And the most painful part was the realization that deep inside her heart, there was a small, traitorous part that secretly longed for Julian, yet hated the idea of having him this way.

In the study across the hallway, Julian stood before an open window, letting the cold wind pierce his skin. He was frustrated. He wanted to refuse, but his grandmother's words about Selena made sense.

His phone vibrated on the desk. A message from his agent.

"Selena just posted a photo from the set of The Silent Heart. Rumor is she's trying to lobby the producers for the main antagonist role in the same film as Scarlett. Julian, she's making her move."

Julian clenched his fists until his knuckles turned white. Selena already knew. Selena knew Scarlett had been cast, and she wasted no time setting her trap.

He was trapped. Between his guilt toward Scarlett, the lingering shadow of Selena, and Victoria's pressure that seemed to leave him no escape.

In her luxurious apartment overlooking Central Park, Selena Harrington sipped her red wine while staring at Scarlett's Instagram profile, newly created by JTC Management. A faint yet deadly smile curved on her deep red lips.

"So, you think you've already won because you got the role, Little Girl?" Selena murmured into the darkness. "Welcome to my stage. Let's see how strong you are when Julian has to choose between protecting you or keeping our secret."

That night, beneath the indifferent New York sky, three hearts were bound together in threads that grew more tangled. Scarlett realized her life would never be simple again. Julian realized he could no longer keep avoiding things. And Selena… she had just begun her first move to destroy everything.

The battle lines had been drawn, and the marriage Victoria planned might be the only fortress left, or perhaps the very beginning of true destruction.
