Chapter 77 - Chapter 77 – Spotlight Heroes and a Monster That Won’t Fall

Tony Stark just stood there, stunned, staring at the towering reptilian figure in front of him as his mind struggled to catch up with reality. Only a few minutes ago, he'd had Dr. Lizard pinned to the ground, grinding him into the pavement like it was nothing, but now the situation had flipped so violently it felt unreal. Instead of controlling the fight, he was the one getting manhandled, and the humiliation burned hotter than the damage flashing across his HUD.

Fortunately, his armor wasn't just metal anymore. The symbiote-infused components kicked in, reacting instantly as black, viscous matter oozed out from the seams like living tar, writhing with a mind of its own. It spread rapidly over the white plating, hardening into a thick keratin shell over his chest while tendrils extended outward, wriggling like vengeful spirits reaching for their prey.

With a sharp, sizzling sound, one of those tendrils lashed forward and wrapped tightly around Dr. Lizard's torso, constricting with unnatural strength. At the same time, Tony flipped open his mask, revealing a grin that carried more edge than humor. His eyes locked onto the raging creature, and there was something almost feral in his expression as he leaned forward slightly.

"Having fun, huh?" he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm and irritation. He didn't wait for a response before adding, "My turn next!!!"

Before he could fully commit to the attack, a metallic clang cut through the air as Captain Steve dropped in from above, shield raised high. The impact came down hard against Dr. Lizard's skull, the force echoing across the area as the creature staggered. A split second later, Hawkeye's arrows followed through, piercing into the monster's back with precision that left no room for error.

Blood splattered across the ground as Dr. Lizard let out a guttural howl, the pain evident but far from decisive. He thrashed violently, muscles bulging beneath his scaled skin, refusing to collapse under the coordinated assault. The creature's resilience was terrifying, and it only seemed to fuel his rage further.

Black Widow didn't hesitate to capitalize on the opening. She slid low across the ground, her movement swift and controlled, and her blade flashed in a precise arc as it sliced cleanly through the tendon at the back of his ankle. The effect was immediate, and for the first time, the towering beast lost its footing, crashing down heavily as its support gave way.

From the sidelines, Gwen watched the entire scene unfold, her chest tightening with every passing second as confusion and unease twisted together inside her. She couldn't reconcile what she was seeing with what she believed, because in her mind, justice was supposed to be clear. It wasn't supposed to look like this, and it certainly wasn't supposed to feel this wrong.

The Avengers were winning, and that was the part that didn't sit right with her. Something about the situation felt off, like the roles had been reversed without anyone acknowledging it. Her gaze shifted toward the fallen figure of Dr. Lizard, and despite his monstrous appearance, she couldn't bring herself to see him as the villain everyone else did.

Beside her, Chief George stood with a similar expression, his eyes fixed on the battered creature with a mixture of concern and uncertainty. He knew how things would look if the media got hold of this, and he could already imagine the headlines painting Dr. Lizard as some kind of nightmare. But the truth felt more complicated than that, and it gnawed at him.

He looked like a monster, sure, but that didn't mean he was one. The man was alone, overwhelmed, and now being ganged up on by the entire Avengers team, and the imbalance of it all raised a question neither of them could ignore. If this was justice, then why did it feel so wrong?

The answer didn't come, because the atmosphere shifted again as the sound of approaching vehicles filled the air. Moments later, reporters and photographers poured into the scene, their energy electric as they rushed forward with microphones and cameras in hand. They might have arrived late, but they were right on time for what mattered most.

"Look! The Avengers are fighting a supervillain," one of them shouted, already framing the narrative before the dust had even settled. Another voice chimed in, louder and more excited, "Is that a dinosaur-man? My God, look at the size of him!"

Cameras flashed rapidly, the sharp bursts of white light cutting through the chaos as shutters clicked nonstop. To them, this wasn't a battle or a moral dilemma. It was a headline waiting to happen, and they treated it like a gold mine.

The effect on the Avengers was immediate and almost instinctive. Tony straightened up, the tendrils on his armor flaring outward as he shifted into a more dramatic stance, his movements exaggerated just enough to catch attention. Steve adjusted his footing, angling his shield not toward Dr. Lizard but toward the cameras, ensuring the iconic star was front and center.

Black Widow and Hawkeye followed suit, their positions subtly shifting as they struck poses that balanced readiness with visual appeal. Every movement was calculated, every angle considered, because they understood exactly what this moment meant.

When the photos hit the media, this was what people would see. This was what they would remember.

"The Avengers strike!" Steve shouted, his voice carrying authority and confidence as he launched forward again. His words hadn't even fully settled before the team surged into action, their coordination tightening as they pressed the attack with renewed intensity.

Despite Dr. Lizard's incredible healing factor and near-impenetrable scales, the relentless pressure began to show results. They found openings, exploited weaknesses, and slowly forced him back until he was slammed hard against a wall, pinned in place by sheer force.

But even then, he refused to stay down.

Inside that monstrous body, something burned fiercely, and it wasn't just rage. He tore the arrows from his side with a savage motion, blood spilling freely as he pushed himself upright again, his movements shaky but unyielding. Every time he fell, he rose again, like something that simply didn't understand the concept of defeat.

"How can I lose?" the thought echoed in his mind, stubborn and defiant. There was too much left unfinished, too many reasons to keep going, and the idea of collapsing here, under the weight of these so-called heroes, felt unacceptable.

"This little injury can't defeat me," he growled, his expression twisting into something fierce and unbreakable as he forced his body to obey.

The Avengers exchanged glances, frustration beginning to creep in as the fight dragged on longer than expected. Under the watchful eyes of the media, every second mattered, and the longer this went unresolved, the worse it looked for them.

"Tony, do you have any good ideas?" Steve asked, his tone carrying an edge of urgency despite his steady posture.

Tony tapped the arc reactor on his chest, his confidence returning as he nodded. "Of course I do," he replied, his voice steady as he explained, "I can release a high-output energy shockwave. One blast, and anything in front of me gets wiped out. Regeneration won't mean anything if there's nothing left to heal."

"Then we'll buy you time," Steve responded without hesitation, already moving back into position.

The team adjusted instantly. Steve charged in again, acting as the immovable anchor, while Hawkeye accelerated his shots, arrow after arrow flying with relentless precision. Black Widow darted through the battlefield, drawing Dr. Lizard's attention and keeping him off balance.

Bit by bit, they locked him down.

Tony stood still, his entire focus shifting inward as energy began to gather at his chest. A blinding white light formed, intensifying with each passing second as beams intertwined and compressed into something dangerously unstable.

"Charging cannon activated… charging… charging complete…" the system announced, the mechanical voice calm in contrast to the growing tension.

Dr. Lizard felt it immediately, his instincts screaming at him as a wave of danger washed over his senses. He struggled violently, trying to break free, but Steve held firm, his shield slamming down again and again to keep him pinned. Hawkeye's electric arrows followed, weaving a net of crackling currents that tightened around the creature.

"There's no escape," Black Widow murmured, watching from the side as anticipation flickered in her eyes.

"Now it's Tony's turn."

"Fire!!!"

The command rang out, and the charged blast erupted forward, tearing through the air with unstoppable force as it barreled straight toward Dr. Lizard.

For a brief moment, despair flashed across his face.

And then—

"Splash!"

A green figure burst into view, moving so fast it was almost impossible to track, and in the next instant, it stood directly in front of the incoming blast.
