It had been a week.
Seven days that stretched longer than they should have, heavier than they had any right to be. I had thought—naively, maybe—that things would settle. That everything would slip back into place like it always did. That whatever this was, whatever he was, would fade into something distant, something manageable.
It didn't.
Nothing went back to normal.
The attacks on the pack had stopped, yes. The new guards were calmer, the borders quieter, the tension that had wrapped itself around the territory had loosened just enough for people to breathe again. On the outside, everything looked fine.
