The demons had noticed the attack almost immediately. The first cries had rung out in the inner courtyard of the fort as the guards posted on the ramparts spotted the dark silhouettes emerging from the reddish mist. Officers crossed the courtyard at a run, their iron hooves resounding on the worn stones, and their powerful voices soon drowned out the noise of the distant explosions.
"Barricade the secondary accesses!" shouted one of them, a demon with skin the color of embers whose twisted horns shone under the light of the braziers. "Bring reinforcements to the west wall! And hurry up, you filth!"
