Chapter 172 - Chapter 86 – The Void Market

The air tasted of ozone and crushed spices as Wei Chen stepped into the Floating District. His skin hummed with static electricity that made nearby lanterns flicker unpredictably. He wore a hooded cloak to hide the black veins pulsing under his flesh, though they leaked energy like oil from a cracked pipe. Su Mei stood beside him in crimson robes, her eyes scanning the crowd for threats or opportunities.

"Keep your core tight," she whispered against his ear as they moved through the throng of cultivators. "The market is hungry." This was Beat One: Thermal Stabilization during Trade. They paused near a stall selling low-grade stones where Su Mei pressed him firmly into an alcove behind fabric screens. She guided her fire essence directly into his void core, burning off excess cold energy that threatened to freeze his meridians from the inside out. Her body moved against his with fluid precision as she absorbed volatile spikes through their shared connection. He groaned softly while holding onto a pillar for stability, feeling her warmth spread like molten gold through his veins until he stopped shaking.

"Good girl," Wei Chen murmured when they separated, watching Su Mei's hair settle back into place. Her power had cooled the heat inside him enough to walk without burning the pavement beneath their feet. This was Beat Two: Resource Acquisition. They approached a podium where an auctioneer held up vials glowing with faint blue light—Void-Infused Pills sold at standard prices despite containing ingredients worth thousands of spirit stones. Wei Chen watched as disciples nearby bought them for pennies, unaware they were holding fuel that could level mountains.

Wei Chen stepped forward to bid on the rarest lot: a Soul Anchor Key rumored to bind wandering spirits. A shadowy figure in gray robes interrupted his bidding with a sneer. "Overpaid mortal," the man scoffed. Wei Chen didn't blink; he flicked a coin across the counter that glowed with pure Yang energy, silencing the room instantly. The bid was accepted but tension spiked as shadows detached from the walls behind them to form fists of darkness ready to strike.

The auctioneer dropped his gavel mid-hammer while chaos erupted around their table. Wei Chen spun on his heel, fan materializing in a blur of gold light that slashed through three attackers before they could raise swords. Su Mei followed with crimson chains snapping outward like whips, binding two more rivals without killing them yet to test their worth later.

Nearby, disciples from the Citadel trained in formation despite the commotion, practicing Wei Chen's new Void stance while gaining strength just by being near his aura. One young boy stumbled backward as he reached a breakthrough threshold, eyes glowing briefly before settling into focus—a sign of collective growth within the group. This was Beat Three: Collective Strength Expansion.

Wei Chen grabbed Su Mei's hand and pulled her toward the exit where they had secured their purchase—the Anchor Key hidden inside a simple wooden box wrapped in black silk. They moved fast as gravity shifted underfoot, pulling them down into the lower markets below. The shadowy figure from before stepped out of nowhere blocking their path again but his eyes widened when Wei Chen's hood fell back to reveal golden pupils veined with obsidian ink.
