Chapter 89 – Mrs. Whiskerson and the Ache of Lemon-Sharp Sourness
Just then the café door swung open; Ross and Julie walked in together, heads close in conversation, moving in perfect sync.
"Hey, Ross, Julie! Perfect timing!" Bruce called out, quickly repeating the festival invitation and everyone's travel plans.
Julie set her messenger bag down, smiling apologetically. "I'm so sorry, Bruce. A critical paleoclimate research project is at a make-or-break stage right now; I absolutely can't leave, not even for a weekend—I'll basically be living in the lab." She turned to Ross, her gaze soft and encouraging. "But you should definitely go! Toronto International Film Festival—this is a huge milestone for Bruce, and friends need to show up for each other. A couple days away is totally manageable."
Encouraged by Julie's nudging, Ross scratched his head self-consciously; seeing Bruce's hopeful expression and Julie's support, he nodded immediately. "Of course I'm coming! Wouldn't miss it! Chandler, want to catch the Friday evening flight together?" He looked at Chandler expectantly.
Chandler responded in the tone of a man resigned to his fate: "Oh, absolutely, Ross. Six hours trapped in a pressurized aluminum tube while you lecture me about dinosaur mating rituals from a hundred million years ago with absolutely no escape route—sounds like my ideal vacation! Sure, it's agonizingly settled."
Ross, already mentally organizing logistics, declared cheerfully, "Great, it's settled then!"
Bruce nodded approvingly. "Perfect. I'll forward everyone's names and travel dates to the festival coordinator and Miramax; they'll handle booking hotels and flights for the whole group."
Julie watched Ross with obvious affection, a tender smile playing at her lips. Suddenly remembering something, she tugged gently on his sleeve; the two exchanged a sweet, wordless glance. Ross cleared his throat, looking like he was about to announce a major diplomatic breakthrough. "Oh, while everyone's here together—Julie and I have decided... we're getting a cat together."
The café fell into abrupt silence.
Rachel's smile froze mid-formation; she dropped her gaze as if suddenly fascinated by the coffee swirl pattern in her mug.
Ross, completely oblivious to the atmosphere shift, continued enthusiastically, practically consulting Monica: "Mon, would it be okay if I picked up Mrs. Whiskerson's old toys tomorrow morning?"
Monica reflexively held up one finger in warning. "Only if you use her complete, proper name."
Ross rolled his eyes but complied, mumbling dutifully, "May I please come get Mrs. Whiskerson the Third's cat toys tomorrow morning?"
Monica nodded, satisfied with his compliance. "Yes, you may."
Joey finally processed what he'd heard, staring at Ross incredulously. "Wait, you're getting a cat?"
Ross glanced at Julie; they shared a warm smile. "Actually, we're getting a cat together. Pay attention, Joey."
Rachel's eyes darted between them as if confirming some unbelievable rumor. "The two of you?"
Ross laughed with mild exasperation. "Yes, Rachel, that's literally what I just said."
Rachel repeated the word like she was chewing something unexpectedly bitter. "Together."
Julie smiled warmly, already envisioning their future. "We'll take care of it together, like practice for having a baby someday."
Rachel inhaled sharply, then produced an exaggerated, artificially sweet smile, her voice jumping a full octave higher. "Oh~~~ that's SO adorable! Like a baby—something you two can nurture together for years and years! Make sure you pick a really healthy kitten!"
Still daydreaming about cat breeds, Ross answered earnestly, "Absolutely, we will."
"Mm-hm." Rachel gave a tight, clipped hum, then theatrically glanced at her bare wrist. "Oh wow, look at the time!" She leapt to her feet abruptly. "I just remembered—I have a date! With a guy! A man!" Words tumbled out in a rush, her eyes bouncing everywhere except toward Ross and Julie. "So... you guys have a super, super wonderful evening! And you two—I hope you get the most super, super perfect cat!"
Rachel grabbed an empty serving tray from the bar counter, clutched it to her chest like a life preserver, and made a beeline for the door without looking back.
"Rachel! The tray!" Monica called after her.
Halfway through the doorway, Rachel skidded to a stop, spun around awkwardly, and shoved the tray into Phoebe's surprised hands while muttering incoherent apologies, then fled again, practically sprinting through the door and disappearing down the sidewalk.
An uncomfortable silence settled over the café. Ross looked genuinely confused. "What was...? Is her date really that time-sensitive?" Julie touched his arm gently, silently signaling to let it go. Monica sighed knowingly. Chandler and Joey exchanged a significant "oh boy" glance.
Phoebe, still holding the abandoned tray, blinked in confusion and whispered to Monica, "Wait, who's Rachel going on a date with? I didn't know she had plans tonight."
Monica whispered back, her eyes flicking toward the now-empty doorway. "Neither did I."
Bruce watched the still-swaying café door and sighed quietly to himself; Ross and Julie's joint-cat decision had apparently become the invisible key that unlocked the floodgate of Rachel's carefully suppressed heartbreak and lemon-sharp longing.
