Chapter 196 - Chapter 196: The Fear of Snorkeling Weasels

The orange-red wheel of Gowlithe and the spiraling blue torpedo of Floatzel collided in the dead center of the arena.

CRACK-BOOM!

The collision sent a shockwave through the gymnasium that shattered the remaining mist and sent a spray of boiling water and steam high into the rafters. The light from the fire and the shimmer of the water created a blinding strobe effect that forced Julian and Wake to shield their eyes.

For a long, agonizing moment, the two Pokémon were locked in a stalemate, fire and water hissing against each other in a violent struggle for dominance.

Then, the explosion happened.

The humid air of the Wetland Sports Hall was thick with the scent of singed fur and ozone. Julian stood on his command platform, his fingers white-knuckled as he gripped the railing. Through the swirling mist of steam—the violent byproduct of Gowlithe's final clash—he could just barely make out the shifting silhouettes on the central islet.

"Gowlithe..." Julian whispered, his heart hammering against his ribs. He didn't need to see clearly to know the cost of that last move. He could feel it through the bond, a flickering flame that had finally exhausted its fuel.

The steam began to thin, pulled away by the gym's ventilation system, revealing the carnage. Gowlithe lay on his side, his eyes spinning in the familiar dizzy pattern of a total knockout. The front of his orange coat was soaked through, but the air around him was still shimmering with heat. Opposite him, Floatzel was standing, but barely. Its sleek body was peppered with angry red burns, and small, stubborn embers occasionally popped from its fur like tiny firecrackers.

The two were encircled by a fading ring of fire—the remnants of the Fire Spin that had trapped them both in a scorching embrace.

"Gowlithe is unable to battle! Floatzel is the victor of this exchange!" the referee shouted, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "Challenger Julian, please send out your final Pokémon!"

"You did more than I could have asked for, buddy," Julian said softly as the red beam of the Poké Ball reclaimed his partner. He tucked the ball safely into his belt, a sharp, determined glint returning to his eyes. "You gave us exactly what we needed. Now, let's bring it home."

He grabbed the next ball and threw it with a snap of his wrist. "Sylveon, the stage is yours! Let's finish what he started!"

Sylveon materialized right at the edge of the cooling Fire Spin. As she landed, the residual heat from the flames acted like a warm blanket. The jagged shards of ice that had been numbing her ribbons began to drip and melt, the steam rising from her fur as she let out a long, appreciative breath.

"Vee-ah... (Oh, that is so much better... I was starting to feel like a Popsicle...)" Sylveon chirped, her ribbons swaying with renewed fluidity.

"Don't let them recover! Floatzel, use Aqua Jet to burst through the flames and get back to the water!" Wake barked, sensing the danger.

Floatzel, despite the searing pain of the burns and the Fire Spin's lingering trap, gritted its teeth. It gathered the last of its moisture, cloaking itself in a pressurized veil of water, and launched itself like a blue bullet toward the edge of the island.

"Not so fast!" Julian countered, a predatory smirk crossing his face. "Gowlithe didn't set that trap for nothing. Sylveon, he gave you the opening—take it! Moonblast!"

"Vee-ah! (My turn to be the bully!)"

Sylveon's eyes flared with a vengeful pink light. She remembered the chilling bite of those Ice Fangs all too well. As the ghostly image of the crescent moon manifested behind her, she funneled every ounce of her remaining energy and her lingering frustration into a sphere of concentrated fairy light.

The pink orb hissed through the air, aimed squarely at the fleeing Floatzel.

BOOM!

The Moonblast struck the edge of the Fire Spin just as Floatzel breached it. The explosion sent a shockwave of pink sparks and orange embers flying across the arena. However, Floatzel's sheer desperation and the momentum of the Aqua Jet allowed it to narrowly avoid a direct hit to its vitals. It skipped across the surface of the pool like a flat stone before vanishing into the dark, murky depths.

"Tch... he's a slippery one," Julian muttered, his eyes scanning the surface.

"Vee... (Sorry, Julian... I was a little slow on the draw,)" Sylveon muttered, her ears drooping slightly.

"Don't sweat it," Julian reassured her, his voice calm. "The ice was still thawing. You're moving better now, and that's what matters. Keep your guard up; he's wounded, and a cornered predator is the most dangerous."

He closed his eyes for a second, focusing his own Aura. He could feel the chaotic energy of the battle still buzzing in the air, but the water was a blind spot. Floatzel was deep, hiding in the shadows of the floating platforms.

Julian's mind flashed back to the "Flame Wheel" command he'd given Gowlithe. It hadn't been a mistake; it was a coded instruction. By calling for "shining" flames, he'd told Gowlithe to prioritize a burn-inducing Fire Spin over a direct physical Reversal. He'd known Floatzel's defensive air sac would have softened a physical blow, but a persistent burn? That would sap the weasel's stamina and, more importantly, create the heat necessary to thaw Sylveon out the moment she returned.

"If he wants to play hide and seek, we'll make him come to us," Julian decided. "Sylveon, center yourself. Use Calm Mind!"

"Vee-ah~ (Time to find my Zen~)"

Sylveon sat back on her haunches, her feelers gently drifting in the breeze. A soft, blue-white aura began to pulse around her as she focused her thoughts, sharpening her special attack and bolstering her mental defenses.

Across the gym, Wake's expression darkened. He knew exactly what was happening. If he let Sylveon finish that meditation, the next attack would be an absolute death sentence for his exhausted Floatzel.

"You're forcing my hand, kid!" Wake shouted. "We aren't letting you sit there and power up! Floatzel, use Whirlpool! Flush her out!"

The previously still water in the center of the gym began to churn violently. A massive vortex formed, the water rising in a spiraling tower that threatened to swallow the islet Sylveon was perched on.

"There you are," Julian whispered. He didn't care about the water; he cared about the source. To maintain a vortex of that size, Floatzel had to be directly beneath it, spinning its twin tails like propellers.

"Cancel the meditation! We've found the tail!" Julian's voice rose to a roar. "Sylveon, aim right for the eye of that vortex! Hyper Voice at maximum output!"

"VEE-AHHHHHHHH!"
