Chapter 35 - Chapter 35: Spring's Awakening

Chapter 35: Spring's Awakening

The first thaw came on the first day of March.

I noticed it during morning patrol—ice melting from the watchtower steps, water dripping from eaves, the particular quality of light that meant winter's grip was finally loosening.

By week's end, green shoots were pushing through the snowmelt. Birds returned to trees that had been silent for months. The world was remembering how to live.

"Population count." Gorlim stood at the planning table, reading from carefully maintained records. "One hundred eighteen souls. Down from one hundred sixty-four at winter's peak."

Forty-six losses over the winter. Twelve to the plague, the rest to various causes—accident, exposure, the simple fragility of people who'd already been pushed to their limits.

"Food stores?"

"Exhausted. We're surviving on early hunting and what we can forage. Another week without resupply would have been... difficult."

"Trade status?"

"Bree caravan due in five days. They're bringing grain, preserved goods, medical supplies. Hamfast knows we're desperate—he's not gouging us, but he's not giving charity either."

Fair enough. Business is business.

"Construction damage?"

"Three buildings need significant repair. Snow collapsed the western storage shed. The main hall has leaks. The wall section near the gate—the one we rebuilt after the orc attack—is showing stress fractures."

The orc attack. That had been nearly a year ago now. Before Ulfang, before Gorlim, before everything that had transformed this ruin into something resembling a functioning settlement.

"Prioritize the repairs. Get work crews organized as soon as the ground firms enough for foundations."

Gorlim nodded and moved off to handle the details.

[WAR COUNCIL — AFTERNOON]

The Rivendell journey dominated discussion.

"You're certain about this?" Halbarad's voice carried concern. "Leaving the settlement now, when we're still recovering from winter..."

"The invitation specified spring. Delaying might be seen as disrespect—or worse, as doubt in my own claim." I studied the map spread across the table. "Besides, Gorlim can handle things in my absence."

Gorlim looked up from his notes. "You trust me that much?"

"I trust that you want this settlement to succeed. That you've proven your loyalty in battle. And that you're smart enough to ask for help if you need it." I met his eyes. "Can you do this?"

Long pause. Then: "I can do this."

"Then the party is set. Myself, Halbarad as advisor, Maeglin for scouting, two guards for security." I turned to Tauriel, who'd been silent through the meeting. "And you, if you're willing."

Something flickered across her ancient features. "You want me to return to Elven lands."

"I want someone who understands Elven protocol. Who can help me navigate a world I've only read about." I didn't add: And who might find something there she's been avoiding for decades.

"Imladris is not my home."

"No. But it's not hostile territory either." I chose my next words carefully. "You've been teaching us for months. Training our archers, sharing your knowledge. Let me offer something in return—a chance to visit your people without having to go alone."

The silence stretched.

"I'll consider it," she said finally. "You'll have my answer by departure day."

[EASTERN ROAD — EVENING]

Maeglin found me during my evening patrol.

"News from Bree." His voice was low, pitched for privacy. "One of our contacts there reports unusual activity."

"Define unusual."

"A stranger. Traveling in grey, old but hale, asking questions about the northern settlements. Who rules. How many people. What defenses. Very interested in the Weather Hills specifically."

A stranger in grey.

Oliver's memories supplied possible identities. Gandalf, most likely—the Grey Pilgrim who wandered Middle-earth doing whatever wizards did. But it could also be...

Saruman. The White who would become corrupt.

I couldn't know which. Couldn't act on suspicions based on knowledge I shouldn't have.

"Did they get a description?"

"Old. Long beard. Grey robes and hat. Carried a staff. Asked intelligent questions and paid well for answers." Maeglin's expression suggested he understood the implications. "Whoever he is, he's building a picture of the region."

"Keep our contacts alert. I want to know if he returns. If he asks more questions. If he heads this way."

"Done."

I watched him disappear into the evening shadows, wondering which future was approaching.

[SETTLEMENT CENTER — DEPARTURE EVE]

The child appeared during my final inspection.

Elsa—the flower girl, the one who'd given me yellow blooms at celebration time. She approached with the particular determination of children who've decided something important.

"Lord Aldric."

"Elsa."

She held out her hand. In her palm rested a single flower—pale purple, delicate, one of the first spring blooms to push through the melting snow.

"For your trip. So you don't forget us."

I crouched to her level, accepting the flower with appropriate gravity.

"I could never forget you. Any of you."

"Mother says you're going to see the Elves. Real Elves." Her eyes widened with wonder. "Is Tauriel going too?"

"I hope so."

"Tell her I said goodbye. She taught me to shoot last week. I almost hit the target."

"I'll tell her."

Elsa beamed and ran off to rejoin her friends. I watched her go, then carefully planted the flower beside the tower entrance—the same spot where I'd placed her previous gift, months ago.

Roots growing where once there were only ruins.
