Chapter 54 - Chapter 54: THE OFFER

Chapter 54: THE OFFER

Hour three found us in a war of attrition.

Father Martinez had been evacuated after a particularly vicious psychic blow left him convulsing on the floor. Father Callahan remained, but his voice was failing, his prayers growing weaker with each passing minute. Only Father Gorman continued at full strength, his Latin unwavering, his faith burning like a furnace in the dark basement.

I stood between the demon and the priests, catching what I could, enduring what I couldn't catch. My nose had stopped bleeding—not because the strain had lessened, but because there wasn't much blood left to bleed. The edges of my vision were dark, my body running on reserves I didn't know I had.

Carolyn still floated. Her face had lost all resemblance to the woman I'd met—features distorted, skin gray, eyes burning with fire that had no earthly source. When she spoke, the voice that emerged belonged to something that had been dead for a century.

"You don't belong here, traveler."

The words cut through the chaos with unsettling clarity. Bathsheba's attention had shifted entirely to me, her assault on the priests pausing, her power focusing like a spotlight.

"I feel the wrongness in you. The others don't know what you are—but I do."

I didn't respond. Didn't acknowledge. Just stood my ground and prepared for whatever came next.

"The wrong soul in borrowed flesh." She drifted closer, still levitating, Carolyn's body moving like a marionette controlled by invisible strings. "I've existed for two hundred years, and I've never encountered anything like you. A consciousness from somewhere else—some when else—wearing a dead man's skin."

My heart pounded. Around me, the exorcism continued—Father Gorman's prayers, Ed's supporting responses, Lorraine's psychic presence—but it all seemed distant now, background noise in a conversation that could destroy everything.

"Leave now," Bathsheba whispered. "Take the Warrens with you. Walk away from this house and never return." Carolyn's face twisted into something that might have been a smile. "This bloodline is mine. These children are mine. That's all I want. Let me have them, and I'll let you go."

The offer hung in the air like poison.

I could feel its seductive pull—the promise of safety, of escape, of walking away from a battle I wasn't sure I could win. Part of me—the human part, the part that remembered being ordinary, that remembered a life before demons and hauntings—wanted to say yes.

But I thought about April. About her hand in mine, her voice asking if I'd save her mommy, her absolute trust in a promise I'd made.

I thought about Roger, signing the authorization with steady hands, putting his wife's life in the hands of strangers because he had no other choice.

I thought about every family I'd helped over the past three years. Every child I'd protected. Every demon I'd faced and every prayer I'd whispered in the dark.

"I don't make deals with demons."

The words came out steady. Stronger than I felt.

Bathsheba's expression shifted from calculating to murderous in the space between heartbeats.

"Then watch them all die."

She threw power.

Not at me—at the priests. At Father Callahan, who was already weakened, already on the edge of collapse. I saw the attack coming, tried to intercept, threw my Mental Walls between the demon and the old man—

Too late.

Callahan clutched his chest and fell. Heart attack. The sudden cessation of his vital signs registered in my peripheral awareness, medical knowledge from another life recognizing the symptoms even as Ed dove to catch the falling priest.

Martinez was already down. Now Callahan. The exorcism team was crumbling.

"Anyone else want to be a hero?" Bathsheba's voice dripped contempt. Her attention swept the remaining participants, settling finally back on me. "How about you, anomaly? Want to tell them what you really are? Want them to know that the soul in that body isn't real?"

I didn't answer. Couldn't afford the distraction. Instead, I poured everything I had left into my shield, creating a barrier between the demon and the last standing priest.

"TELL THEM!" Bathsheba screamed, and Carolyn's body convulsed with the force of her rage. "Tell them you're not from this world! Tell them you're a pretender, a fraud, a thing wearing human skin!"

"Paul—" Lorraine's voice, sharp with concern. "What is she—"

"Lies." Father Gorman's voice cut through the chaos, never breaking rhythm with his prayers. "Demons lie. That's what they do. Everyone focus. We're not done yet."

The moment passed. The chaos continued. Whatever Bathsheba had tried to reveal was lost in the storm of prayers and screaming and psychic combat.

But she'd almost done it. She'd almost exposed everything.

[SOUL INTEGRITY: 95/115 → 85/115]

[PSYCHIC STAMINA: 50/135 → 30/135]

[WARNING: NEAR EXHAUSTION]

I felt myself flagging. The system confirmed what my body already knew—I was running on empty, burning reserves I couldn't replace, approaching the limits of what faith and determination could sustain.

Father Callahan was being dragged toward the stairs by Ed. He'd survive—the heart attack was minor, stress-induced—but he couldn't continue. Father Martinez was already outside, recovering from his concussion. The exorcism team had gone from five priests and three investigators to one priest and three exhausted civilians.

"Still fighting?" Bathsheba asked. Carolyn's face wore an expression of mock concern. "You look tired, traveler. Maybe it's time to rest. Maybe it's time to let go."

I raised Ed's father's crucifix. It blazed with light—golden radiance that pushed back the darkness, that made Bathsheba recoil even in her position of strength.

"I don't rest until you're gone."

"Such determination. Such beautiful, futile determination." She spread Carolyn's arms wide, a mockery of crucifixion. "Let's see how long it lasts."

The next assault was the worst yet.

I caught it—barely—but the impact drove me to my knees. Blood vessels burst in my eyes. My hands shook uncontrollably. The crucifix nearly fell from my grip.

But I held on.

Father Gorman's prayers continued, rising to a crescendo, the ancient Latin words filling the basement with sacred power. Whatever reserves I had left, I gave them to his defense, created a shield around him that nothing could penetrate.

"Vade, Satana, inventor et magister omnis fallaciae—"

Bathsheba screamed.

"—hostis humanae salutis—"

The floating figure convulsed. Carolyn's body shook violently, suspended in air, caught between two forces that refused to yield.

"—da locum Christo, in quo nihil invenisti de operibus tuis—"

Something was changing. I could feel it—a shift in the pressure, a weakening in the presence that had dominated this basement for hours. Bathsheba's grip was slipping.

"NOW!" Father Gorman's voice thundered. "NOW THE REAL FIGHT BEGINS!"

I forced myself to my feet. Lorraine was at my side, her hands on my arm, her strength flowing into me like water into a dying plant. Ed had returned from evacuating Callahan, his rosary glowing with concentrated faith.

"Together," Lorraine said. "All of us. Everything we have."

I raised the crucifix one more time.

The basement exploded with light.
