Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Closer Than Ever

The holidays stretched on, each day warmer, brighter, and more intoxicating than the last. Yumi found herself waking up with a quiet thrill, knowing that Pherrie would be by her side—teasing, protective, impossibly close. The boundaries between them were dissolving slowly, in the most maddening, thrilling way.

That morning, they wandered along a hidden trail near the cliffs, sunlight filtering through the leaves in golden slivers. Pherrie walked slightly ahead, but every now and then he would turn, letting his eyes catch hers with that familiar, teasing glint.

"You're too quiet again, Princess," he said, slowing his pace so she could catch up. "Thinking about me?"

Yumi's cheeks flamed. "I'm not!" she protested, though her voice wavered despite her words.

He tilted his head, smirk widening. "Sure you're not. I can see it in your eyes… every time I look at you, it betrays you."

Her fingers twitched, wanting to reach for him, to feel the warmth of his hand. And Pherrie, of course, noticed.

"You know," he murmured, stepping closer, brushing lightly against her arm, "you're the only one I've ever met who reacts to me like this. And it's… delightful."

Yumi's breath caught. "P-Pherrie…"

But he didn't stop teasing. "Delightful… and dangerous. Dangerous for you, Princess, because you're starting to fall for me."

Her heart skipped. "I-I'm not!"

"You are," he said confidently, leaning closer. "And you like it."

Yumi's protest died on her lips, because deep down… she knew he was right.

Before she could regain her composure, laughter echoed from the path below. Kai appeared first, sunglasses tilted, smirk on her lips. "Still wrapped around him, huh?" she said lightly, voice teasing but tinged with envy.

Yumi swallowed. "Ignore her," Pherrie murmured, stepping even closer, brushing his hand lightly over hers. "She's irrelevant. Only you matter."

Kai's eyes narrowed, clearly irritated, but she didn't stay long. She turned, leaving with a casual wave that only made the tension between Pherrie and Yumi thicken.

Then, suddenly, Damian appeared—again, at the worst possible timing. His eyes were sharp, dark with frustration, and he stepped onto the path, blocking their way.

"Yumi, we need to talk," he said, voice low, tense. "Alone."

Pherrie's jaw tightened. That teasing sparkle vanished from his eyes, replaced by something possessive, dangerous. He moved instinctively, shielding Yumi with his body.

"Alone?" Pherrie's voice was calm, but every syllable carried the weight of jealousy. "I don't think so."

Damian's expression hardened. "She belongs with me!"

Pherrie stepped closer, tilting his head down to whisper in Yumi's ear. "Stay close, Princess." His fingers brushed hers, intertwining. The contact was soft, gentle—but every bit as possessive as his glare at Damian.

Yumi's heart pounded. She realized then how much she relied on him, how safe and yet electrified she felt just being near him.

"Pherrie…" she whispered, and he only squeezed her hand, smirk returning, teasing yet protective. "Watch and learn, Princess," he murmured softly.

With effortless control, Pherrie guided Yumi behind him, blocking Damian entirely. His eyes never left the other boy's as he spoke, low and dangerous. "I said she's with me. Do you understand?"

Damian's face contorted in frustration before he finally stepped back. "You'll regret this," he muttered, voice tight.

Yumi exhaled slowly, chest pounding. Pherrie's hand still held hers, his warmth grounding her. "Are you okay?" he asked, voice gentle, teasing gone for now.

She nodded. "I am… with you."

Pherrie's lips curved into a satisfied, mischievous smile. "Good. Because I'm not letting go."

The sun dipped lower, casting gold and pink across the cliffs. As Yumi looked up at Pherrie, she realized—this summer, these holidays, this teasing, protective, dangerously close boy had become something she couldn't ignore.

And she didn't want to.

Her hand squeezed his, heart racing, breath caught in her throat. Slowly, unmistakably, she was falling… and this time, there was no turning back.
