The murmurs among the Genin from the different teams were muted, cautious.
The gap in power exposed in the first two fights had shattered any illusion that this phase was a simple exhibition tournament.
Between the horror of Kankurō's mutilation and the surgical two-second execution on Sakura, the weight of ninja reality crushed the arena.
In the center of the ring, Malenia stepped forward two paces, letting her dark cloth cloak sway with the gusts of cool air circulating through the ceiling vents.
She pulled a new scroll from her tactical vest, unrolled it with a sharp flick of her wrist, and read the names aloud, projecting her voice firmly against the sandstone walls.
"Third match! Karin of Sunagakure vs. Samui of Kumogakure! Both contenders, step down to the arena immediately!"
In the Kumo delegation's balcony, Samui didn't make a single gesture of surprise. She adjusted the collar of her dark uniform, settled the white sash holding her short sword (tanto) at the small of her back, and looked at her mentor. Killer B, unusually quiet for a moment, lowered his dark sunglasses by a fraction of a millimeter, observing the figure of the Sand kunoichi beginning to move on the opposite platform.
"No beat-around-the-bush, Samui. None of these Genin are playing around in these battles," B said in a serious tone, dropping his usual rhymes entirely.
"That girl isn't a average ninja. She's the daughter of Sasori, Muguro no Shūshūka (The Collector of Corpses) she could come at you with puppets or with her Uzumaki lineage. Keep up the pace, don't give her room to breathe."
Samui nodded in silence with an almost imperceptible tilt of her head.
Without saying a single word, she vaulted over the stone railing, descending through the air fluidly and landing on the sandy surface with feline grace, barely kicking up a few grains of sand beneath her ninja sandals.
In the Sunagakure balcony, Karin adjusted her red-framed glasses over the bridge of her nose. She quickly checked the leather pouches strapped to her thighs, ensuring that her tactical sealing scrolls and everything else were in their exact places.
Guren, who stood a couple of meters away with her arms crossed, looked at her out of the corner of her eye.
"Don't waste chakra on unnecessary displays, Karin," Guren said in a stern voice.
"The Kumo ninja rely blindly on the speed of their Kenjutsu and the permeability of their Raiton. If you let her dictate the close-quarters combat distance, you're dead before you can even do anything. Use the terrain."
"Understood, Sensei," Karin replied, a small, sharp smirk forming on her lips.
She pushed off from the edge of the balcony, landing on her feet ten meters away from her opponent. She adjusted her battle stance, keeping her arms slightly bent and her fingers brushing the sheaths of her tools.
"Both contenders in position..." Malenia raised her right hand, gauging the tension between Samui's calculating composure and Karin's analytical posture.
"Green light... BEGIN!"
In the exact microsecond the command cut through the air, Samui didn't waste a moment. Her right hand shot down at blinding speed toward the hilt of the tanto on her back.
SHING!
A flash of blue electricity illuminated the dimness of the arena. Samui imbued her short blade with a concentrated discharge of Raiton chakra, causing the steel blade to emit a sharp, buzzing hum, akin to the chirping of thousands of birds trapped in a tight space.
Utilizing a classic Kumogakure flash step, she closed the ten-meter distance in less than a second, appearing on Karin's left flank with a horizontal thrust aimed directly at her shoulder joints.
"So fast!" Karin thought, reacting not by sight, but through reflexes honed by her father.
Karin executed a desperate leap backward, leaning her torso at an almost impossible angle. The Raiton-imbued blade passed mere millimeters from her face; even though the steel didn't touch her, the residual electric arc cut a lock of her red hair and singed the fabric at her neck.
Without losing momentum, Samui pivoted on her right heel, executing a second diagonal scissor-style strike, aiming to sever the tendons in Karin's legs to neutralize her mobility.
Karin pulled two reinforced kunai from her pouches, crossing them in an 'X' shape to intercept the short sword.
CLANG!
The clash of metal against metal echoed throughout the entire arena, sending off a shower of blue and orange sparks.
However, physical advantage and electrical conductivity were entirely in the Kumo kunoichi's favor.
The Raiton discharge traveled instantly through the steel of Karin's kunai, reaching her gloves and sending a paralyzing shock up her forearms.
"Ugh..." Karin stifled a groan of pain as her muscles contracted violently from the shock.
She was forced to drop her tools to prevent the current from reaching her heart.
Taking advantage of the Uzumaki's open guard, Samui stepped in firmly and delivered a powerful front kick to Karin's stomach, sending her tumbling violently across the sand for several meters.
On the Konoha platform, Naruto grabbed the railing with heightened interest.
"Look at that, Kakashi-sensei, Sasuke! This fight's gonna be good—let's place bets!" Naruto said, looking at both of them with a fox-like grin.
Sasuke, standing beside Naruto, kept his eyes locked on the fight, though Naruto's words caught his attention.
"Who are you betting on?" Sasuke asked.
"Karin, for sure! If she's an Uzumaki like me and mom, gotta support the family," Naruto said.
"I'm going with the Uzumaki too," Kakashi said, setting his Icha Icha book aside.
"Fine, I'll take the easy money—I'm going with the Kumo blonde," Sasuke replied.
In the upper section where Daigo observed the fight, he looked to his right, where Sasori stood watching the battle.
"You look concerned, Sasori," Daigo asked.
Sasori, looking back with his emotionless face, shook his head.
"I've trained Karin enough for her to be strong. I'm not concerned; I just want to spot areas where I can help her improve and mistakes she might make," Sasori said.
"Well, that's true. Karin-chan is an Uzumaki, so there shouldn't be any problem," Daigo said, turning back to watch the fight.
Down in the arena, Karin quickly pushed herself up onto one knee, spitting a thread of blood running from the corner of her mouth. Her arms trembled slightly from the lingering effects of the electrical paralysis, but far from showing panic, her red eyes behind her glasses gleamed with cold, methodical calculation.
"Her quick-draw speed is flawless, and her Raiton cuts right through air resistance," Karin analyzed in her mind, adjusting her glasses with her left hand while her right discreetly reached toward her back pouch.
"But her style relies on maintaining direct contact through metal. If she wants to touch me, she'll have to step right into my domain."
Samui didn't wait for her to recover. She bent her knees and vanished again in a burst of pure speed, leaving a deep imprint in the sandstone surface.
The blade of her tanto hummed again with even greater electrical density, projecting a thin sheet of white light in the air as she launched a straight thrust toward Karin's chest.
"Kumo-Style Blade: Flowing Decapitation Strike!"
Samui appeared before Karin like a ghost made of lightning. The thrust was so fast it seemed impossible to dodge for someone without an ocular bloodline limit.
However, at the precise microsecond the tip of the sword pierced Karin's cloak, the red-haired girl's body dissolved into a burst of printed paper and dense smoke.
"A substitution?" Samui thought, her eyes widening slightly as her tanto only ran through an open cloth scroll in midair.
"Fuinjutsu: Terrestrial Domain Trap!" Karin's voice echoed from above.
Karin had used the previous impact and the smoke from her fall to hide a quick-summon scroll beneath the surface layer of the sand.
While airborne after Samui's kick, she had drawn a series of ink characters on the ground using her own bloodied fingers.
On the ground, directly beneath Samui's feet, four black ink marks glowed with an intense crimson light.
The sealing formula expanded into a perfect geometric grid, covering a three-meter radius around the Kumo kunoichi.
From the sandy surface, six stone pillars instantly sprouted. The pillars planted themselves firmly into the floor, generating a transparent barrier of containment chakra that surrounded Samui from every angle.
"An instant sealing barrier?" Killer B muttered from the mentors' section, surprised by the execution speed.
"Drawing a formula of that caliber in mid-fall requires flawless chakra control."
Inside the barrier, Samui immediately felt the shift in pressure. The electric light surrounding her short sword began to flicker violently until it died out completely.
The flow of Raiton chakra running through her internal pathways was smothered and suppressed by the pressure of the network's Fuinjutsu.
"My chakra is being neutralized..." Samui analyzed with haunting composure, showing no hint of distress.
"This barrier isn't meant to destroy me; it's meant to isolate my chakra and strip away my primary advantage."
Without losing her cool, Samui shifted strategies in a fraction of a second. If she couldn't use Ninjutsu or Raiton inside the sealing field, she would rely on the raw force of her discipline.
She flexed her arms, gripped the tanto reverse-handed with both palms, and channeled all her physical energy into her legs.
CLANG!
Samui struck out with a brutal blow against one of the barrier's main pillars. The sheer physical force of her Kenjutsu was so massive that cracks began spreading across the pillar's stone, causing the stability of the Fuinjutsu to falter.
"She won't stop even with her chakra blocked," Karin thought, landing five meters away from the barrier as her hands moved at top speed, forming an uninterrupted sequence of hand seals.
"I have to wrap this up before she breaks the core anchor."
Karin slammed both palms against the floor of the arena.
"Fuinjutsu: Paralysis Mesh Seal!"
From Karin's palms, lines of black ink slithered like snakes across the sand, entering the perimeter of the barrier and beginning to glow on the ground.
The ink marks glowed bright, preparing to ensnare their prey.
However, Samui proved why she was one of the most experienced kunoichi of her generation. The microsecond the ink lines took position, Samui didn't try to resist the seal; she channeled raw physical force to her muscles, gripped her tanto with all her strength, and attacked to shatter the damaged pillar with a devastating strike.
CRACK!
The stone pillar snapped in half, and the transparent barrier dissipated in a burst of red sparks.
Free from restriction, Samui's Raiton chakra flared to life again with a fierce roar.
The Kumo kunoichi didn't take a single step back; she rocketed out from the smoke of the destroyed barrier, closing the distance toward Karin at a speed even greater than at the start of the match.
Her face reflected absolute resolve: she wouldn't give her room to draw another single seal.
"It's over!" Samui shouted, executing a downward slash aimed straight for Karin's neck.
The distance was less than half a meter. The electricity-infused short blade was millimeters from slicing into the Uzumaki's flesh.
The Genin in the stands leaned forward, intent on the battle, believing the match would end in a clean decapitation.
It was in that microsecond, on the razor's edge between life and death, that Karin stopped acting like a conventional strategist and unleashed the dormant heritage of her ancestral lineage.
Her red eyes glowed with dazzling intensity behind her glasses. A golden, dense, visceral, and overwhelming chakra exploded from the core of her body with a roar that shook the sandstone ring.
CLANG-CRASH!
From Karin's back and torso, no air or earth technique emerged; four imposing Adamantine Chakra Chains (Kongō Fūsa) burst forth.
The golden links, formed from chakra of near-solid density, shot out at destructive speeds.
Two of the chains thrust themselves directly into the trajectory of Samui's tanto. The impact of the sword against the golden chains produced a deafening metallic clash that echoed across the entire arena.
The force of the collision shattered the steel blade of Samui's sword, reducing it to metallic shrapnel that flew in all directions.
"Wh-What is this?!" Samui gasped, her eyes widening in shock for the first time in the entire fight as the shockwave knocked her back through the air.
The other two golden chains gave her no chance to land. They moved through the air like steel serpents, crossing the space in a heartbeat.
One chain wrapped violently around Samui's torso, pinning her arms to her sides, while the second chain clamped tightly around her legs, immobilizing her midair.
BOOM!
Kankurō and Deidara had shown violence, but what Karin displayed was absolute suppression. The chains slammed Samui onto the arena floor, pinning her flat on her back against the hard sand. All four chains drove deeply into the sandstone floor around her, forming a pillar of sealing power that made the ground crack.
Samui attempted to gather Raiton chakra to burst the chains from within, but the moment she tried to mold even the smallest amount of energy, the Fuinjutsu characters etched into each golden link flared a vivid red.
"Ugh..." Samui let out a stifled groan. She felt all her chakra being instantly drained, siphoned, and neutralized upon contact with the golden metal.
Her muscles lost all strength and her breathing grew heavy; she was completely trapped, immobilized, and stripped of any ability to fight back.
An imposing silence descended over the arena.
In the Kumo balcony, Killer B leaned heavily against the railing. His dark sunglasses reflected the golden radiance of the chains dominating the center of the ring.
"The Adamantine Chains of the Uzumaki clan..." B muttered, an unusual gravity in his voice.
"That technique isn't just a chakra construct... it's a living seal of legendary caliber. Samui had no way to predict that—and even I'd have a hard time if those caught me."
On the main balcony, Daigo looked down at the scene with a slight smile of satisfaction. Beside him, Sasori kept his eyes fixed on Karin, nodding slightly in silent approval of his daughter.
In the arena, Karin was breathing heavily. She adjusted her red-framed glasses with her right index finger, holding her ground firmly while the four golden chains continued to float and hum softly around her, keeping Samui completely sealed and unable to make the slightest move.
Karin walked slowly toward the trapped Kumo kunoichi, stopping a couple of paces away. She looked down at her with a serious, analytical expression, devoid of arrogance.
"Your Kenjutsu is insanely fast, and your Raiton is almost impossible to dodge at close range," Karin said aloud, her voice carrying across the entire venue.
"But steel and speed cannot cut through the will of Uzumaki sealing. The fight is over."
Samui, though trapped and exhausted from the chains draining her chakra, maintained dignity in her blue eyes. She gently let her head rest back against the sand, closing her eyes in a gesture of professional resignation.
"I accept my defeat..." Samui whispered softly.
Malenia took two steps forward, entering the perimeter of the fight. She observed the golden chains, verified the total inability of the Kumo contender to break free, and raised her right hand toward the ceiling of the coliseum.
"The contender Samui of Kumogakure cannot continue!" Malenia announced in a clear, firm voice.
"The winner of the third match: Karin of Sunagakure!"
Upon hearing the official verdict, Karin dispersed the Adamantine Chains. The golden structures vanished into a soft shower of light particles that dissolved into the arena air.
Freed from the pressure, the medical support team entered the field to evaluate Samui. She slowly pushed herself up with the medics' help, offering a brief, respectful bow toward Karin before being escorted out of the arena.
Karin turned toward the upper balconies, adjusted the collar of her uniform, and began walking up the stairs back to the Sunagakure platform in absolute silence, consolidating her village's dominance in the first round of the tournament.
Though not before looking up at her father with a wide smile for her victory.
