Twilight in the Demon Desert was beginning to stain the dunes a violent crimson. Temperatures plunged drastically as darkness crept in, turning the suffocating midday heat into a biting cold.
Through a rocky pass flanked by towering columns of eroded sandstone, Konoha's Team 10 advanced with heavy, visible exhaustion.
Chōji Akimichi trudged forward with great difficulty, leaning much of his weight on a wooden walking stick while breathing heavily. His chakra reserves were practically depleted after prior clashes against multiple squads of rogue ninjas who had tried to ambush them.
Ino Yamanaka was in no better shape; her forehead was beaded with cold sweat, and she rubbed her temples in frustration, feeling the characteristic migraine brought on by mental overexertion after repeatedly using her Mind Transfer techniques to keep them safe.
Only Shikamaru Nara maintained a steady pace, though his dark eyes never stopped scanning the shadows along the trail.
Tucked inside his thigh pouch were the two trophies of their survival: the gold key and the silver key. They had everything necessary to cross the gate and qualify for the third phase of the Chūnin Exams, but luck didn't seem to be on their side.
"Shikamaru... we need to stop for a couple of minutes," Chōji pleaded, collapsing heavily onto a stone block. "My legs feel like sacks of lead. If we run into anyone else right now, I won't be able to use the Baika no Jutsu."
"Chōji is right," Ino chimed in, leaning against the canyon wall.
"My chakra is completely spent. If I try one more Shinsenshin no Jutsu, I'm going to pass out right here."
Shikamaru came to a halt, letting out a long, heavy sigh as he scratched the back of his neck.
"What a drag..." Shikamaru muttered, looking up at the rapidly darkening sky. "I knew this would happen if we lingered so long in the southern zone. Still, we can't stay out in the open like this. The gate is less than two kilometers away, but this pass is the ultimate bottleneck for—"
Shikamaru froze mid-sentence. A icy chill ran straight down his spine.
"Ino, Chōji, get up. Right now," Shikamaru ordered in a tone so sharp and serious that his two teammates reacted instinctively, forgetting their exhaustion for a fraction of a second.
"What is it, Shikamaru?" Ino whispered, dropping into a defensive stance.
Before Shikamaru could answer, a calm female voice echoed from the top of the canyon walls, accompanied by the soft crunch of shifting sand beneath footsteps.
"It's useless to try and hide or set up a shadow trap in these narrow passages, Nara," the calm voice said.
"I can sense the chakra flow of all three of you. The big guy is at the absolute brink of collapse, the girl is in even worse shape, and you're just as exhausted... and no matter what escape route you calculate in your head, not a single one has more than a zero percent chance of success."
From the crest of the rocky wall, three figures emerged. Sunagakure's Team A had completely sealed off the only exit of the pass.
In the center stood Karin, her glasses neatly adjusted on the bridge of her nose, wearing a confident smirk. Her advanced sensory abilities—the Mind's Eye of the Kagura—had already scanned every cubic meter of the area, pinpointing their exact positions and nullifying any attempt at a surprise attack.
To her left stood Daiku, an imposing figure with a new katana strapped to his back, arms crossed with patient dominance.
To the right was Sunae, the team's leader, observing them with a curious, analytical gaze, surrounded by a subtle breeze of wind and dust that responded to her sheer presence alone.
"Suna's Team A..." Ino gritted her teeth, feeling a heavy tightness in her chest. "They were waiting for us."
"They weren't waiting blindly, Ino," Shikamaru corrected bitterly, his eyes locked on the three Sand ninjas. "They've been tracking us since we entered the canyon. That red-headed girl... her sensory skills are so good we didn't have a clue."
Sunae took three steps forward along the edge of the cliff, looking down at Team 10.
"You have the two keys we need to complete this phase," Sunae declared, her crisp voice echoing against the stone walls.
"We know what you're made of. You're a fine strategist, Shikamaru Nara, but strategy requires energy and physical effort. Right now, your team lacks the chakra, the speed, and the physical strength to sustain a fight against us."
Daiku cracked his knuckles, producing a dull eco. "If you try to fight, the gap in power is so wide that we can't guarantee you'll make it out of this pass alive. Surrender."
Kiba and the others weren't there to back them up, and Team A's presence was absolute. Shikamaru began processing the information at mind-boggling speed. His brain analyzed dozens of battle scenarios in a matter of seconds:
Plan A: Chōji uses his giant form to force a breach through the big guy's position. Result: The guy stops him dead in his tracks using his weapon, potentially severing Chōji's arm, or the green-and-orange-haired girl neutralizes him before he can take three steps. Chōji ends up severely injured or dead.
Plan B: Ino attempts a long-range mind attack against the girl to buy time. Result: The redhead senses the chakra fluctuation before the technique travels three meters and interrupts it with a direct counterattack, leaving Ino in a mental coma due to her depleted reserves.
Plan C: Shikamaru uses his Kagemane no Jutsu to trap all three using the evening shadows. Result: The redhead warns her teammates of the shadow's exact trajectory. The other girl strikes from the air where shadows can't reach, pulverizing the ground beneath Konoha's feet.
The outcome of every single variable was identical: a crushing defeat, severe permanent injuries, or the inevitable death of his friends.
"Shikamaru... what do we do?" Chōji asked, breaking into a cold sweat as he tried to channel the very last embers of his energy into his fists to stand ready. "Tell us what to do and we'll try it. We're not just giving up like this."
"Shikamaru, we can combine our attacks one more time..." Ino insisted, even though her legs were shaking from sheer physical exhaustion. "If you create a distraction..."
"Quiet for a second, both of you," Shikamaru interrupted softly, holding up a hand.
Shikamaru closed his eyes for two seconds. True maturity as a shinobi as his father and his sensei Asuma had taught him did not lie in fighting to the death in every meaningless battle, but in knowing when the cost of an impossible victory destroyed the primary objective: keeping his comrades alive.
When he opened his eyes, all doubt had vanished from his face.
Shikamaru slowly reached into his thigh tactical pouch.
Daiku and Sunae tensed up for a fraction of a second, ready to obliterate them at the slightest hint of an attack.
However, Shikamaru didn't pull out a kunai or a smoke bomb. He brought out the gold key and the silver key, holding them flat in his open palm for everyone to see.
"Shikamaru... what are you doing?!" Ino gasped in horror.
"You're right," Shikamaru said in a calm, resolute voice, looking directly up at Sunae. "Fighting you in our current state isn't a battle; it's suicide. My duty as the leader of this team isn't to drag my friends into a slaughter just out of pride."
Shikamaru tossed both keys high into the air, spinning them through the sky before they landed right at the feet of Sunae and her team.
"We surrender. The keys are yours," Shikamaru declared firmly.
Chōji and Ino froze. For a moment, the silence inside the canyon was absolute.
Karin glanced down at the keys at Sunae's feet and then adjusted her glasses, locking her gaze onto Shikamaru's chakra network.
"There's no deceit in his chakra flow," Karin confirmed, a spark of surprise and respect gleaming in her eyes. "He's completely serious. He accepted defeat rationally."
Sunae bent down gracefully and picked up both keys from the ground, slipping them into her tactical pouch. She then looked down at the Konoha boy, a faint smile of approval gracing her lips.
"A remarkably mature decision, Nara. You seem quite intriguing," Sunae acknowledged, gesturing for Daiku to stand down.
"Most genin your age would have let their ego drive them to the grave or to mutilation. Knowing when to retreat takes far more courage and brainpower than recklessly jumping into a lost fight."
"You're lucky you're smart, kid," Daiku added in a more relaxed tone. "You saved us all some time and effort."
"Now that you have what you wanted, I assume you'll let us pass or fall back," Shikamaru said, keeping Ino and Chōji behind him.
"Of course," Sunae replied, turning her back on Team 10 as she began walking toward the exit of the pass alongside Karin and Daiku.
"Sunagakure does not seek unnecessary slaughter when mission objectives are already fulfilled. I advise you to seek medical attention for your teammates; the desert at night shows no mercy to the weak."
In a blur of speed, Suna's Team A vanished into the shadows of the rocks toward the gate, carrying the keys required to qualify.
Once the enemy's presence had completely vanished, Chōji sank to his knees in the sand, breathing heavily, while Ino stared at Shikamaru with a mixture of sadness, frustration, and deep understanding.
"Shikamaru... really...? You just handed over the keys?" Ino asked softly. "After everything we fought for..."
"I did it to keep you guys alive," Shikamaru answered, walking over to her and helping Chōji back onto his feet.
"Keys can be recovered, or we can find another way to interfere in the upcoming phases if the rules allow it. But if Chōji lost an arm or your brain got fried from overexertion, none of this would have been worth it."
Ino looked at the exhausted yet firm face of her leader and friend, realizing the immense weight Shikamaru had just taken onto his shoulders. It wasn't cowardice; it was the mark of a true commander.
"You're right..." Ino whispered, giving him a small, grateful smile as she leaned slightly on Shikamaru's shoulder. "Thanks, Shika."
"Yeah... thanks, buddy," Chōji added, giving him a solid pat on the back.
"You saved our lives."
Shikamaru stared down the path where Suna's Team A had disappeared as total night fell over the Demon Desert.
"What a drag..." Shikamaru sighed, adjusting his headband.
"Now let's find a safe place to spend the night. Suna proved they're on another level in this exam, but this isn't over yet, and I trust the others will make it through."
Together, they set off to find shelter.
