Chapter 14 - Chapter 14 : The Hunting Ground (4)

### The Standoff

The clearing was silent except for the heavy breathing of six exhausted students and the predatory stillness of four bullies.

Marcus's eyes never left the B-Rank token. It pulsed faintly on the ground between the two groups—a prize worth more than everything they'd taken combined.

"That token," he said slowly, "doesn't belong to you."

Noah's voice was ice. "We killed it. We earned it."

"You're in no condition to defend it."

Ryo, despite swaying on his feet, managed a lazy grin. "Want to test that theory?"

One of Marcus's companions shifted nervously. "Marcus, they just killed a B-Rank. Maybe we should—"

"Shut up." Marcus's jaw tightened. "They're exhausted. Look at them. The samurai can barely stand. The mage is out of mana. The princess is running on fumes. The quiet one's bleeding. The glasses kid is useless. And the martial artist just got thrown into a tree."

Sora's eyes narrowed. She was bleeding from a cut on her forehead, but her stance was steady. "I've fought through worse."

"Have you?"

The tension stretched like a wire about to snap.

Leo's mind raced. They were in no condition for another fight. The bullies weren't fresh—the Wolf-Vipers had done a number on them—but they hadn't just fought a B-Rank monster. They had energy. Mana. Strength.

The six of them had nothing left.

But they had something else.

Leo stepped forward.

"Take it."

Everyone stared at him.

Mochiko's voice was sharp. "Leo, what are you doing—"

"Take the token," Leo repeated, looking directly at Marcus. "Go ahead. Pick it up."

Marcus blinked, suspicious. "What's the catch?"

"No catch. It's right there. All yours."

Marcus hesitated. This was too easy. Too convenient.

Leo smiled—a thin, sharp smile that looked wrong on his usually nervous face. "But here's the thing. That token represents a B-Rank monster. And you know what the faculty is going to do when they see that token?"

Marcus frowned.

"They're going to ask questions. They're going to want to know who killed it. They're going to interview everyone in this forest." Leo's voice was calm, reasonable, terrifying. "And when they do, six of us are going to tell them exactly what happened. That we fought it together. That we nearly died. That we were exhausted and defenseless when four students showed up and stole the token."

The color drained from Marcus's face.

"Think about it," Leo continued. "The faculty already knows you've been stealing points. Professor Whiskerbottom laughed at you. If you take that token—if you try to claim a B-Rank kill you had nothing to do with—what do you think happens next?"

Silence.

Marcus's companions exchanged nervous glances.

"He's bluffing," one of them muttered.

"Am I?" Leo's smile didn't waver. "Go ahead. Test it."

For a long, agonizing moment, no one moved.

Then Marcus spat on the ground. "This isn't over."

"It never is," Noah said quietly.

The bullies turned and disappeared into the trees.

---

### The Collapse

The moment they were gone, Leo's legs gave out.

Ryo caught him before he hit the ground. "Easy, glasses. You did good."

"I can't believe that worked."

Mochiko slumped against a tree, her phoenix mark flickering weakly. "I can't believe you had the guts to try."

Kagari sank to her knees, staff clattering beside her. "Is everyone... okay?"

Sora touched the cut on her forehead, wincing. "I'll live."

Noah's hands were shaking—from exhaustion, from adrenaline. He looked at the B-Rank token still sitting in the clearing. Then he walked forward, picked it up, and tucked it into his pouch.

"We need to move. Extraction point. Now."

Ryo nodded, pulling Leo upright. "Agreed. Before more trouble finds us."

They stumbled through the forest—six broken students, supporting each other, moving toward the extraction point with the last of their strength.

---

### The Extraction Point

The clearing at the forest's edge was chaos.

Students milled about, comparing points, treating injuries, waiting for transport back to the academy. Faculty members moved through the crowd, recording results and checking for serious wounds.

The six of them emerged from the trees like ghosts—pale, shaking, barely standing.

Professor Whiskerbottom took one look at them and his eyebrows shot up.

"What in the seven kingdoms happened to you?"

Noah stepped forward. Despite his exhaustion, despite his injuries, he held himself straight. He reached into his pouch and pulled out the B-Rank token.

"We found this."

Whiskerbottom's eyebrows climbed higher. "A B-Rank? You six fought a B-Rank?"

"Together."

"And you won?"

Noah nodded. "Together."

Silence spread through the nearby students. Whispers began—"They fought a B-Rank?" "Six first-years?" "Is that even possible?"

Whiskerbottom studied the token, then studied the six students before him. Bruised. Bleeding. Exhausted. But standing.

Together.

"Points will be calculated and posted tomorrow," he said finally. "Get to the infirmary. All of you. That's an order."

They didn't argue.

---

### The Infirmary

Madame Vesper had never seen anything quite like it.

Six students, all admitted at once, all bearing injuries from the same fight. Bruises. Cuts. Exhaustion. Mana depletion. Aura burnout.

She moved from bed to bed, treating, checking, muttering.

"Broken rib—no, cracked. You'll live. Concussion—mild. Rest. Mana exhaustion—three days minimum recovery. Don't argue with me, young man."

Leo lay in his bed, staring at the ceiling. "We actually did it."

Mochiko, in the next bed, snorted weakly. "We nearly died."

"But we did it."

Ryo, somehow already asleep despite his injuries, snored softly.

Kagari lay quietly, her eyes closed, a small smile on her lips.

Sora sat on her bed, refusing to lie down despite Madame Vesper's glares. Her sharp eyes moved between her companions, cataloging, assessing.

Noah sat on his bed, the B-Rank token in his hands. He'd carried it out of the forest. He'd presented it to Whiskerbottom. He'd made sure everyone knew they'd done it together.

But the token was his to hold, for now.

He looked at his friends—at Ryo's peaceful sleeping face, at Leo's exhausted grin, at Mochiko's stubborn pride, at Kagari's quiet presence, at Sora's silent vigilance.

"Thank you," he said quietly.

No one responded. They didn't need to.

---

### The Bullies' Fate

Marcus and his group never made it to the extraction point.

Faculty teams found them wandering lost in the forest, completely disoriented, their signal charms broken. How they'd gotten so lost—and how their charms had broken—was a mystery.

Whiskerbottom had his suspicions. He'd seen Sora Yamino's eyes during the story. He'd seen Ryo Kazehaya's lazy smile. He'd seen Leo Willheim's sharp grin.

But without proof, there was nothing to be done.

The bullies were disqualified from the exercise. Their points—stolen and otherwise—were voided. They'd spend the next week in detention, cleaning the academy's least pleasant facilities.

Marcus's glare, as he was led away, promised revenge.

No one was particularly worried.

---

### The Points

The next morning, results were posted. Students gathered around the massive board, pushing and shoving to see.

**FINAL STANDINGS — HUNTING EXERCISE**

| Rank | Name | Points |

|:----:|------|:------:|

| **1** | Noah Reinhart | 47 |

| **2** | Sora Yamino | 41 |

| **3** | Mochiko Qiuyue | 39 |

| **4** | Kagari Hitsugi | 35 |

| **5** | Ryo Kazehaya | 33 |

| **6** | Leo Willheim | 20 |

| **7** | Ren Takami | 18 |

| **8** | Mira Ashford | 17 |

| **9** | Kaelen Voss | 16 |

| **10** | Lin Wei | 15 |

Leo stared at the list. Rank 6. Twenty points. Twenty!

He'd started with zero after the bullies took his points. Zero. And somehow, through traps and teamwork and a B-Rank monster, he'd ended with twenty.

"I'm rank six," he whispered. "I'm actually rank six."

Mochiko appeared beside him, arms crossed. "Don't let it go to your head."

"Too late. It's already there."

Ryo wandered over, yawning. "Rank five. Not bad for a nap."

"You slept through half the exercise!"

"And still ranked above you."

Leo's eye twitched. Kagari smiled her tiny smile.

Noah stood apart, staring at his name at the top of the list. Rank one. Forty-seven points.

The B-Rank token had been worth twenty points—more than any monster they'd faced. And as the one who'd delivered the final blow, he'd been awarded the largest share.

But he knew, better than anyone, that he hadn't done it alone.

He looked at his friends—his family. They were laughing, arguing, being ridiculous.

He wouldn't trade them for anything.

---

### That Night

The six of them sat on the balcony—their balcony now, everyone had accepted it—watching stars wheel overhead.

Ryo was, predictably, asleep.

Mochiko was pretending to be unaffected by her ranking. She wasn't fooling anyone.

Kagari sat close to Noah, their shoulders almost touching. Neither commented on it.

Sora observed from the edge, as usual.

Leo broke the silence. "We fought a B-Rank monster today."

No one responded.

"We fought a B-Rank monster and won."

Still no response.

"That's insane. That's actually insane."

Mochiko snorted. "You're just realizing this now?"

"I've been in shock for the last twenty-four hours. It's wearing off."

Ryo, without opening his eyes: "We're insane. Together. That's the important part."

Noah looked at the B-Rank token in his hands. It was just a piece of metal, really. But it represented something more.

"Together," he agreed quietly.

Leo grinned. "Rank one, forty-seven points. How does it feel?"

Noah considered the question. Pride? Satisfaction? Relief?

"Warm," he said finally.

Everyone stared at him.

"Warm? That's your answer?"

"Ice affinity. Warm is significant."

Mochiko burst out laughing—a real laugh, rare and wonderful. Kagari hid her smile behind her hand. Even Sora's lips twitched.

Ryo, still asleep, mumbled, "Told you. Family."

Leo looked at them—at this strange, chaotic, impossible group of people who had somehow become his family.

"Yeah," he said softly. "Family."

Under the stars, six friends sat together in peace.

The training was over.

The real challenges were just beginning.

But tonight, they had this.
