Nora's POV
"Such a pleasure meeting you. Lena mentioned you live on Orchard Street, just a couple blocks away? That's quite an exclusive neighborhood. And did I catch the boys getting excited about some kind of sports car outside?"
"Why don't you just ask for his tax returns," I mumble under my breath, my eyes rolling involuntarily. James slides his arm around my shoulders, his touch steadying me.
"I'm simply making conversation," Mom responds softly. Perhaps she genuinely is, but years of conditioning make me interpret every word as a personal attack.
"Yes, I do live nearby. It's a wonderful area."
Mom's face brightens with approval. "Absolutely. I was thrilled when Helena chose that neighborhood. Perfect for families with children." An awkward pause stretches between us before Mom tentatively reaches over, patting my knee. "I've really missed you, sweetheart."
I search her eyes, startled to discover unshed tears glistening there. "You know exactly where to find me."
