Nora's POV
"A witch hunter did this?" I ask, though I already suspect the answer. My stomach clenches with dread. "When did it happen? Where exactly?"
"That appears to be the case. Recently, in a coven across the state line in Michigan. Another young woman, roughly your age." Charlette's eyes fix on me with maternal concern, clearly imagining me in the victim's place. She shakes her head in distress.
"Was the killing method identical?" Gideon reaches for his mother's trembling hands, steadying them with his own.
"Yes. The throat was completely torn open, right down to the windpipe. Then the body was suspended and set ablaze. From examining this poor girl, we determined she had already died from blood loss before the burning began."
"That doesn't match typical witch hunter behavior," Gideon says slowly, his gaze shifting toward me. "Witch hunters usually derive pleasure from watching us burn alive."
