"What?" I blink rapidly, forcing back the tears that threaten to spill over again like some broken dam I can't seem to repair.
"That tale will have to wait for another moment." Hugo extends his hand toward me with theatrical grace. "Shall we proceed?"
"Yes." I swipe at my eyes with the back of my free hand and scoop up Mack, holding him securely against my chest where his warmth provides an odd comfort.
"Hello there, ancient friend," Hugo addresses Mack directly, whose true identity as Oberon, a spirit of considerable power, seems to amuse him.
"You two are acquainted?"
"Our paths have intersected on several occasions during various demon-related enterprises. That familiar of yours possesses remarkable abilities."
"I'm aware." I press my face into Mack's soft fur while Hugo's fingers curl around mine. The world blurs as he lifts us into flight, carrying us away from this place. Simona performs her usual acrobatics in my womb, making me smile despite everything.
