The policy arrived disguised as improvement.

It did not mention the contractor.

It did not reference the decision that had removed her.

It did not carry Alfian's name.

It didn't need to.

By the time Alfian saw the draft, the language had already settled into place—smooth, balanced, unmistakably reasonable.

To reduce ambiguity and increase operational efficiency, interim alignment measures will be standardized across applicable processes.

Applicable.

Every word had been chosen to resist objection.

Raka read over Alfian's shoulder. "This is built on what happened yesterday."

"Yes."

"They're formalizing the shortcut."

"They're calling it structure," Alfian replied.

The policy introduced a new mechanism: proxy alignment.

When a senior reviewer was unavailable, decisions could proceed in alignment with previously demonstrated principles—documented, summarized, and approved by a designated panel.

No single signature required.

No explicit delegation.

Just continuity.

"This is dangerous," Raka said.

"It's elegant," Alfian replied. "That's why it will survive."

By midmorning, the policy had been circulated to department heads. Comments were enabled—for a while.

Most responses were positive.

This clarifies expectations.

Reduces bottlenecks.

Supports momentum.

No one mentioned risk.

At a briefing later that day, the facilitator spoke with confidence.

"We've learned from recent experience," he said. "When decisions move smoothly, everyone benefits."

Alfian sat near the back, listening.

"And this framework," the facilitator continued, "ensures we're not dependent on any single individual."

A few heads nodded.

"That includes me," Alfian said calmly.

The facilitator paused. "Yes. Exactly."

"That's not what you mean," Alfian replied.

A murmur passed through the room—quiet, restrained.

"We mean resilience," the facilitator corrected.

"Resilience without accountability," Alfian said, "is camouflage."

Silence followed.

The facilitator recovered quickly. "This is a pilot."

"For how long?" Alfian asked.

"Until it proves effective."

"And if it harms someone?" Alfian continued.

The facilitator smiled thinly. "We'll evaluate outcomes."

"After the fact."

"That's how evaluation works."

Alfian said nothing more.

That afternoon, the first use of the policy occurred.

A minor case—low visibility, low risk. A decision advanced under proxy alignment. It moved faster than usual. No friction. No questions.

People noticed.

"See?" someone said quietly. "It works."

By the end of the day, three more cases followed.

Momentum did the rest.

Raka watched the dashboard update. "They won't stop now."

"No," Alfian agreed. "They've found a way to feel safe while acting."

"And you?"

Alfian looked at the policy again. "I've been converted into precedent."

Raka frowned. "You didn't consent."

"That's irrelevant once it's normalized."

As evening approached, Alfian received a private message.

We believe this addresses your concerns about misuse of your name.

Alfian stared at it.

"They think this protects you," Raka said.

"It protects them," Alfian replied.

"Will you challenge it?"

Alfian considered the question.

Challenging the policy publicly would stall operations. It would look obstructive. Defensive. Personal.

Letting it stand would turn a misuse into doctrine.

"I won't challenge the language," Alfian said slowly. "I'll challenge the assumption."

"Which is?"

"That alignment can replace responsibility."

Raka waited. "How?"

"By forcing it to choose."

That night, Alfian drafted a short addendum.

Not a rebuttal.

Not a rejection.

A requirement.

All proxy-aligned decisions must include a named accountable owner, independent of referenced principles.

He sent it to the same panel.

No commentary attached.

By morning, the response arrived.

This may reduce efficiency.

Alfian replied with a single sentence.
