Even if the battle took place near the Mortuary, no one would associate it with him. It was simply too unrealistic.

Kifu was naturally pleased with this outcome.

If Sarutobi Hiruzen discovered the truth, there was no telling when he might be dispatched to execute high-difficulty missions or even be forced to the front lines of the battlefield. He might have accepted it if he truly possessed that level of power. The problem was that he did not.

It was better to focus on steady growth until he possessed the ability to protect himself.

Kifu looked at the two corpses lying on the wooden beds. One glowed with a red light and the other with a green light. His mouth curled into a grin while the corners of his eyes twitched. He smiled, though it pained him.

The value of a Rare Experience Card was beyond doubt. If he could not recoup his losses from these two corpses, he would suffer a massive deficit.

Kifu felt the power within his body. It had not yet dissipated. He did not waste time waiting for it to vanish. Instead, he began a series of attempts and learning exercises within the Mortuary.

As a veteran Konoha Jonin, the strength and experience of Miura Ichigo were not things a Genin like himself - who had only graduated a year ago - could hope to match. He had defeated an elite Chunin in just a few breaths. He did not want to waste the remaining time. It would be beneficial even if he only gained a small amount of precious experience.

Furthermore, he suspected that the effects of a Rare card were not limited to just a temporary buff.

As time passed, the power that did not belong to him finally faded away. Kifu's eyes flickered.

`[Trial Ended!]`

`[Extra attribute bonuses obtained due to active learning: Phys +3, Spirit +1, Nin +1]`

'It worked!'

He realized that as long as he was willing to learn, he could obtain unexpected rewards from the brief power boost. Five attribute points were equivalent to several single-stat Upgrade Cards. This was not a loss!

He reached into his pocket out of habit and pulled out the cigarettes he had swindled from Asuma. He placed one in his mouth and lit it with satisfaction. He took a deep breath.

Only after inhaling did he remember this was the Mortuary. Smoking here was an act of environmental pollution and a sign of disrespect toward the dead. He did not exhale the smoke. He forced himself to swallow it.

Anyone who has smoked knows the sensation of swallowing smoke. It felt as though he had swallowed a mouthful of wasabi. He stumbled outside and leaned against a wall, dry-heaving repeatedly.

It took a long time for him to recover. The cigarette had already burned halfway down, leaving a long trail of gray ash.

He flicked it with his finger.

If he wanted to obtain benefits from the corpses, he first had to respect them. He took another puff and finally felt refreshed. He extinguished the cigarette butt and returned to clean up the broken glass and scattered Shuriken.

He made a decision. He would not sleep until after midnight! He could only rest easy after opening his rewards.

He pulled over an old rocking chair and stretched before lying down. The wood emitted a sharp, ear-piercing creak as he began to rock gently.

If anyone passed by the Mortuary at this time, they would certainly be frightened. A rocking chair in a mortuary, the sound of wood rubbing together, and a bit of imagination... it was a terrifying thought.

"The life of a salted fish is so peaceful," Maruyama Kifu mused.

Time passed quickly. The clock struck midnight. Kifu, who had been acting like a lazy salted fish, saw a system notification and jumped up.

"I have waited so long for this day, I have dreamed so long for this dream to come true..."

He hummed a small tune to himself as he washed his hands and face. He straightened his clothes. He had to be pious.

He walked toward the red corpse but paused. He shifted his steps toward the green corpse of the man who had come to steal bodies tonight.

"Brother, we actually have no grudge. I just wanted to quietly harvest a corpse. I did not say I would not give it to you. I would have handed it over after I finished my business. You were just too impatient. In the end, you turned yourself into a corpse. Was it worth it?"

As he spoke, he placed his hand on the man's chest.

"Give me something good, and we will call it even."

He activated the System.

`[Failed!]`

"..."

'I said all those nice things for nothing?'

"Do not be ungrateful. Do you believe I will throw you into the sea to feed the fish?"

He tried again.

`[Success! Obtained: Iwa Shinobi Huoshi's Obsession!]`

'Oh? There is loot!'

However, he did not understand its function based on the name alone.
