Chapter 207 - Chapter 203: One Point of Air

The fourth quarter started with the kind of silence that isn't silence.

The arena was loud, packed, buzzing, but right at the moment the referee raised the ball and blew the whistle to restart play, every sound compressed into one heavy pressure in the chest. It felt like thousands of lungs holding the same breath. Like the whole campus was waiting for one body to break.

Health Track had a narrow lead, but no lead felt safe in this place. Not with rotated referees who carried policies in their whistles. Not with security standing near the baseline like the game was a trial. Not with the red board outside the arena, waiting to collect names.

XH stood at the top of the key, knees bent, hands on thighs for a second, breathing through ribs that screamed every time he inhaled. Sweat ran down his temples. His taped fingers felt numb. He blinked hard once, trying to clear the blur of fatigue.

Across from him, VT rolled his shoulders like a boxer, eyes calm and mean. His team looked fresher, not because they were better conditioned, but because they had been allowed to play with less fear. Fear drains energy faster than sprinting.

NS stood near half court, eyes sharp, posture loose in a way that looked effortless. XH knew it wasn't effortless. NS was controlling his breathing like a metronome, keeping his body from panicking. He pointed once, small signal, and the team moved.

JP slid to the wing. TZ positioned for the screen. XH drifted toward the corner like a shadow, ready to ignite.

In the stands, Kitty was standing again before the ball even moved. Her hands were cupped around her mouth like she didn't care who heard her. Like she had decided silence was a betrayal.

June sat rigid beside her, posture perfect, face composed, but her jaw was clenched so tight it trembled. She kept her eyes on the court, telling herself she was watching the game, not Kitty.

But she heard Kitty anyway.

Everyone did.

The referee tossed the ball in. Play resumed.

VT drove first, trying to punch a hole in the lane. NS stepped in front and absorbed the contact. VT leaned into him again, shoulder lowered.

Whistle.

The arena froze.

The referee pointed.

Foul on NS.

Boos erupted from Health Track stands. Cheers erupted from VT's side. The whistle didn't just call a foul, it declared whose body was allowed to exist.

NS didn't react. He just exhaled slowly, eyes locked on the referee for a half second, then looked away.

XH saw it. That discipline.

Part of him respected it.

Part of him resented it.

Because XH's anger was always louder inside.

VT stepped to the line and sank the free throws cleanly. The lead shrank. The arena noise rose.

Kitty shouted, furious. "That's not a foul! That's not a foul!"

People turned their heads again. The cheerleaders from other majors smirked. Thoon's group sat somewhere higher, watching with that cruel curiosity. HTN's eyes glittered like she enjoyed the drama. SRM leaned in to whisper something with a smug smile.

Kitty didn't care.

Kitty wasn't performing for them.

She was fighting for XH and she didn't know how to fight quietly.

June heard the way Kitty said it.

Not the words.

The emotion.

June's chest tightened.

She swallowed hard and forced herself still.

Health Track brought the ball up again.

NS controlled the pace, dribbling slow, letting the seconds stretch. VT's defender pressed him hard, trying to force a mistake. NS didn't bite. He shifted his weight, quick cut, then passed to JP.

JP caught, pump faked, drove two steps, then kicked back to TZ.

TZ shot.

The ball hit rim and bounced.

XH's body moved automatically. He crashed into the paint for the rebound, ribs screaming. VT's defender shoved him mid-air. XH landed hard, shoulder rolling to absorb impact.

No whistle.

The crowd gasped.

Kitty screamed, loud and raw. "FOUL!"

June flinched.

Not because Kitty was wrong.

Because Kitty was loud enough to make the whole arena see it.

XH pushed himself up fast, jaw clenched, eyes burning. He wanted to look at the referee. He didn't.

He swallowed the reaction like poison.

NS grabbed the rebound instead and kicked out to XH.

XH caught the ball at the corner.

He didn't think.

He rose.

Three point shot.

Swish.

The arena erupted.

Kitty's voice exploded over the roar. "YES! THAT'S MY XH!"

The words landed like a grenade.

Laughter rippled through the crowd. People turned, staring, smirking, whispering.

June's face went still.

My.

June's throat tightened.

She told herself it was just words. Just adrenaline.

But her body didn't believe that.

Her fingers clenched.

Kitty didn't sit down. She didn't hide. She didn't soften.

She stood like she had claimed something in public and dared the world to question her.

XH heard it, felt warmth and danger collide in his chest. He kept his face neutral, but inside something fluttered like a scared bird.

VT's eyes sharpened. He glanced toward the stands, saw June's rigid posture, then Kitty's bold stance, then looked back at XH with a faint smile.

VT knew exactly what he was doing.

He was not only trying to win the game.

He was trying to fracture them.

VT drove hard again, forcing contact. This time he leaned into XH deliberately, shoulder into ribs.

Pain flashed white across XH's vision.

XH stumbled.

Whistle.

The crowd froze.

The referee pointed.

Foul on XH.

XH's jaw clenched so hard it hurt.

He forced his hands open at his sides, forced his face calm.

Kitty screamed again, louder. "WHAT? HE GOT HIT!"

The arena murmured. People laughed. People stared. Some even cheered Kitty's boldness. Some mocked it.

June's stomach twisted.

Kitty defending him like that in public felt intimate in a way June couldn't ignore.

VT sank the free throws again.

The score tightened.

It became a knife.

Four minutes left.

Every possession now felt like a heartbeat that might stop.

The commentators were screaming over each other.

"This is it!" the excited one shouted. "No bench, no breath, no mercy!"

The analytical one cut in. "Watch the duo. Watch NS and XH. They have to close like professionals now."

Close.

XH swallowed hard. His ribs burned. His legs felt heavy.

He glanced up, just once, toward the stands.

Kitty's eyes were locked on him.

Not flirting.

Not teasing.

Pure belief.

June's eyes were locked too.

Not soft.

Not gentle.

A different kind of belief, sharper, almost angry.

XH felt it like two ropes pulling him in opposite directions while he stood on a thin bridge.

NS stepped closer to XH, voice low. "Lock in."

XH nodded once.

NS brought the ball up again, faster now. VT's defender pressed. NS shifted, sudden burst, drove, then pulled up and hit a clean shot.

The crowd erupted.

Health Track regained a small lead.

Kitty screamed again, but her voice cracked. She had been shouting so long her throat was raw.

"YES! YES!"

June's jaw clenched.

She hated that she couldn't hate Kitty.

Because Kitty's loyalty was pure.

Pure is difficult to fight.

VT called for the ball and went into attack mode, trying to force a turnover. He swiped at NS, clipped his arm.

No whistle.

NS held control anyway, grimaced, then passed to JP.

JP faked, drove, then got shoved hard by a VT defender.

JP fell.

No whistle.

JP slammed his palm on the floor, rage flaring.

He started to rise too fast.

XH stepped over, hand on JP's shoulder, voice low. "Don't."

JP's eyes were wild. "They're stealing it."

XH's jaw clenched. "I know."

JP swallowed the rage and stood.

Two minutes left.

The game became chaos.

Bodies colliding. Sweat flying. Sneakers squeaking like screams.

VT's cohort hit a shot, cutting the lead to one. The crowd roared.

Kitty's hands trembled. She clasped them together like prayer.

June leaned forward, eyes wide now, discipline cracking under fear.

NS dribbled at the top of the key, seconds ticking down.

He looked at XH.

One glance.

A signal without words.

NS drove, drew two defenders, then kicked to XH at the wing.

XH caught.

A defender rushed.

XH hesitated half a heartbeat.

He heard Kitty scream his name even before he shot.

"XH!"

The sound hit him like electricity.

He rose.

Three point shot.

The ball arced.

Time stretched again.

Then swish.

The arena exploded so loud it felt like the roof lifted.

Kitty screamed like she had been stabbed by joy. "YES! THAT'S YOU! THAT'S YOU!"

Students turned their heads again, but nobody could deny it now. Kitty's voice had become part of the game's soundtrack.

June's chest burned.

She felt jealousy so sharp it scared her.

Not because Kitty was loud.

Because Kitty was loud and XH heard her.

Because Kitty's loyalty was public and fearless.

June swallowed hard and whispered to herself, barely audible, "I can be loud too."

NC heard it and glanced at June, but didn't speak.

Because June was not asking for permission.

She was making a vow.

VT's cohort tried a quick answer, drove into the lane, but TZ blocked the path, arms up, body solid.

The shot missed.

Rebound.

NS grabbed it and held the ball like it was the last breath of a drowning man.

Thirty seconds left.

Health Track up by four.

Not safe.

Never safe.

VT fouled NS hard.

Whistle.

Finally.

VT smirked like he didn't care.

NS stepped to the line, breathing controlled, hands steady.

The crowd tried to rattle him.

NS sank the first.

Sank the second.

Health Track up by six.

The arena roared.

Kitty's voice broke into a sob-laugh. She covered her mouth for a second, then screamed again anyway.

June stared at the scoreboard.

Her heart hammered.

This win mattered.

Not just because it saved their placement.

Because it proved they were not disposable.

VT pushed for a fast three. He launched a shot from deep.

It missed.

JP grabbed the rebound and hugged it like treasure.

The referee blew the final whistle.

Buzzer.

Game over.

Health Track won.

The scoreboard updated.

Series now 1–2.

The arena erupted into chaos.

Health Track students screamed. Some cried. Some hugged strangers. Some dropped to their knees like the win had pulled a weight off their necks.

Kitty cried openly, not caring who saw. Her shoulders shook as she laughed through tears.

June didn't cry immediately. She just exhaled hard, like she had been holding her breath for days. Then her eyes stung, and she blinked fast, refusing to let tears fall in public.

Cherry jumped up and shouted something obscene at VT's section.

NC hugged Anna and whispered, "We're still alive."

Jihye stared at the court, expression blank, then whispered to herself, "One win doesn't end a war."

On the court, XH stood breathing hard, ribs screaming, sweat soaking his shirt, tape on his fingers damp. He looked up at the stands finally.

Kitty was standing, crying, shouting his name.

XH felt warmth punch through him.

Then he saw June.

June was standing too now, not shouting, but staring at him with eyes that looked like they were changing shape.

Not soft.

Not angry.

Determined.

NS stepped up beside XH, voice low. "We did it."

XH nodded, breath ragged. "We did it."

JP hugged TZ briefly, hard. TZ laughed once, exhausted.

Then staff moved in.

Security stepped closer.

The institution did not like joy.

Joy meant the students still believed they had power.

A supervisor approached with a microphone and a clipboard, voice amplified.

"Students," he announced calmly. "We congratulate both cohorts on maintaining competitive spirit. However, stability protocols remain active. Any celebratory misconduct will be reviewed."

The crowd booed.

The supervisor continued, "All players will report for immediate post-game review and signature confirmation."

Signature.

Always signature.

VT stood at the edge of the court, face cold, humiliation tight around his mouth like a bandage. His eyes locked on XH.

VT didn't smile anymore.

He promised something with his gaze.

Not words.

Promise.

XH's stomach tightened.

Kitty's voice softened into a chant with other students.

"Win. Win. Win."

Health Track students joined in.

The chant grew.

It filled the arena.

The supervisor's face tightened.

Security shifted.

The institution couldn't stop the chant without showing its teeth too openly.

Outside the arena, rain began again.

Soft at first.

Then heavier.

No forecast.

No warning.

Just the sky echoing the rhythm of the story.

As students filed out under security eyes, Kitty and June walked side by side, both wet-eyed, both tense.

Kitty whispered, voice raw, "Did you hear them chant."

June nodded, voice quiet. "I heard."

Kitty's hands trembled. "We're not done."

June's jaw clenched. "No."

Kitty glanced at June, eyes still wet. "I didn't mean to…"

June cut her off softly but sharply. "You did."

Kitty froze.

June inhaled slowly. "And that's why it matters."

Kitty swallowed.

June's voice dropped to a whisper. "If you can be loud, so can I."

Kitty's chest tightened.

In the distance, XH walked with JP, TZ, and NS toward the review room again, shoulders heavy under victory.

He had won the game.

But the institution still held the leash.

And now, with the series at 1–2, the campus wasn't just watching a match.

It was watching the start of something that would spill far beyond the court.

Jealousy.

Pride.

Power.

And rain that arrived like a warning.
