Chapter 56 - CHAPTER 56: THE DAUGHTER'S MISSION

The girl at the Grill bar was watching Jeremy Gilbert.

I noticed her the moment I walked in for my evening shift—dark hair, young face, the kind of focused attention that made the hairs on my neck stand up. She'd positioned herself at the bar with a clear sightline to Jeremy's usual booth, nursing a coffee she hadn't touched in twenty minutes.

My blood sense triggered before I consciously reached for it.

Cold. Dead. Old.

The girl looked maybe fifteen or sixteen, but the blood told a different story. Centuries of existence compressed into a teenage frame. Vampire—and not a newborn. This was someone who'd mastered the art of blending in, who could sit in a crowded restaurant without anyone noticing the predator in their midst.

Anna. The name surfaced from my meta-knowledge like a bubble rising through murky water. Pearl's daughter. The one who's been working with Damon.

I grabbed an apron and started my shift, keeping her in my peripheral vision while I served customers and bussed tables. She was patient—vampire patient—barely moving, barely breathing, just watching Jeremy flip through a comic book and ignore his homework.

Why Jeremy? What did she want with Elena's little brother?

The Gilbert journals. The connection clicked into place. Jonathan Gilbert had written detailed accounts of the 1864 vampire purge, including information about the tomb. Jeremy was a Gilbert. He might have access to family archives that Anna needed.

I approached her table with my order pad, the professional mask firmly in place. "Can I get you anything else? Your coffee's gone cold."

She looked up at me, and for a moment, her eyes flickered with recognition. Not of my face—of my nature. She could sense something wrong about me, just as I could sense her.

"I'm fine." Her voice was light, girlish, completely at odds with the ancient intelligence behind her eyes. "Just waiting for a friend."

"New in town?"

"Returning, actually." She smiled without showing teeth. "My mother has roots here. Deep ones."

Her mother is in the tomb. Pearl. One of Katherine's closest allies.

"Well, welcome back. Let me know if you need anything."

I retreated to the bar, my mind racing. Anna wasn't just a threat—she was a puzzle piece. She wanted her mother freed, which meant she wanted the tomb opened. But she wasn't mindlessly violent like the vampires who'd been attacking travelers. She was strategic. Careful.

Maybe... workable.

The idea was dangerous. Insane, probably. But I couldn't stop thinking about it. Anna wanted one specific vampire released—Pearl. She didn't care about the other twenty-five. If there was a way to extract Pearl without unleashing a massacre...

I bided my time until my break, then approached her table again with a fresh coffee. "On the house."

"How generous." Her eyes tracked my movements with predatory precision. "And suspicious."

"Just being friendly."

"No one is just being friendly. Especially not someone who smells like you do."

I sat down across from her, keeping my hands visible on the table. "What do I smell like?"

"Power. Something in your blood that shouldn't be there." She leaned forward, studying me like a specimen. "I've been alive for five hundred years. I've never encountered anything quite like you."

Five hundred years. Older than I'd guessed. Older than most vampires in Mystic Falls.

"I know why you're here," I said quietly. "I know about the tomb. I know about Pearl."

Her mask cracked for just a moment—surprise, then fear, then controlled fury. "Who told you?"

"No one told me. I'm just very good at paying attention." I met her ancient eyes without flinching. "I'm not your enemy, Anna. I'm not even opposed to Pearl being released. But if that tomb opens completely, twenty-six starving vampires flood this town. People I care about die. That's where we have a problem."

She was silent for a long moment, calculating. I could almost see the centuries of experience working behind her eyes, evaluating threats and opportunities.

"You're the one who's been interfering with Damon's plans," she said finally. "The vervain network. Caroline's bracelet. Lexi's escape."

"Guilty."

"He wants to kill you."

"I know."

"And yet here you are, offering to help me save my mother?"

"I'm offering to have a conversation." I slid a napkin across the table with my phone number written on it. "Your mother's been starving for 145 years. When she gets out, she'll need to feed. Can you guarantee she won't massacre half the town?"

The question hit its mark. Anna's composure flickered again—she was genuinely worried about Pearl's state, about what centuries of starvation had done to her.

"I'll contact you," she said finally. "If I decide you're useful."

"That's all I'm asking."

She stood, leaving the untouched coffee on the table. At the door, she paused and looked back.

"The boy. Jeremy Gilbert. I need access to the Gilbert journals. I wasn't planning to hurt him."

"Noted."

"But I will if I have to."

Then she was gone, disappearing into the evening with vampire speed.

I texted Stefan before my break ended: Damon's partner identified. Female vampire named Anna. Her mother Pearl is in the tomb. She's approaching Jeremy Gilbert for access to family records. Possible negotiation avenue.

His response came immediately: Be careful. Anna is 500 years old. She's survived by being ruthless.

I stared at the message and thought about monsters and mothers. About Vicki and the desperate things I'd done trying to save her. About Anna, who'd spent 145 years trying to free a parent she loved.

The game was getting more complicated. But complicated meant opportunities.
