Chapter 30 : The Blonde Target
Caroline was laughing at something when I spotted Damon across the parking lot.
I'd been waiting by my truck, watching the after-school crowd disperse, when the Camaro pulled up to the curb. Damon stepped out with the casual arrogance of someone who'd never been told no, his attention locked on a specific target.
My girlfriend.
Caroline stood near the school entrance, talking to Bonnie about something—probably cheerleading, given the animated gestures. She hadn't noticed Damon's approach. Neither had Bonnie.
I started moving.
Damon reached Caroline first. He said something that made her smile—that practiced, charming smile I'd seen him use at the Grill. Caroline was flattered, I could see it in her posture. An older, attractive man paying attention to her. Exactly the kind of validation she'd always craved.
This is how it happened in the show. This is how he got to her.
I was thirty feet away when Damon reached for her wrist.
The one wearing my bracelet.
His fingers touched the braided cord, and he jerked back like he'd grabbed a hot coal. The motion was fast—vampire fast—but I caught it. His charming expression froze, replaced by something cold and calculating.
"That's a lovely bracelet." His voice had changed. Still smooth, but with an edge underneath. "Where did you get it?"
Caroline beamed, oblivious to the undercurrent. "My boyfriend made it for me. Isn't it sweet?"
"Sweet." Damon's eyes found me across the parking lot. The look he gave me wasn't friendly. It was assessment. Recognition. The cold calculation of a predator identifying an obstacle.
"Lucky boyfriend," he said, turning back to Caroline with a smile that didn't reach his eyes. "I hope he knows what he has."
Then he walked away, climbing into his Camaro and pulling out of the lot without a backward glance.
Caroline watched him go, confused. "That was weird. He seemed really interested, and then he just... left."
"Some guys are like that." I reached her side, trying to control my breathing. "Probably remembered he had somewhere to be."
"Probably." She shook off her confusion and wrapped her arms around my neck. "Where have you been? I've been waiting forever."
"Got held up. Sorry."
The bracelet pressed against my shoulder as she hugged me—the braided cord, the hidden vervain, the protection I'd spent days crafting. It had worked. Damon couldn't touch her, couldn't compel her, couldn't make her into his victim.
The plan worked.
But the victory felt hollow. Damon knew now. He'd felt the vervain burn his skin, heard Caroline mention her boyfriend. He'd done the math.
I kissed Caroline instead of explaining. Some truths were too heavy to share. Some fears would only multiply if spoken aloud.
"What was that for?" She was smiling when we separated.
"Because you're beautiful and I missed you."
"You saw me three hours ago."
"Long three hours."
She laughed and threaded her fingers through mine. The bracelet glinted between us—blue and green cord, glass beads, protection she didn't know she was wearing.
We walked to my truck together, and I tried not to think about the look Damon had given me. The cold recognition. The promise of future attention.
I'd made an enemy today. A powerful, ancient, patient enemy who'd just discovered that someone in Mystic Falls was interfering with his plans.
Damon Salvatore wouldn't forget. Vampires never forgot.
But Caroline was safe. The bracelet worked. Whatever came next, I'd protected the person who mattered most.
The Camaro was gone when we pulled out of the parking lot, but I knew Damon wasn't far. He was watching. Waiting. Planning his next move.
What's your play now? Caroline's off-limits. Vicki's recovering. Stefan won't let you hurt Elena.
The answer came to me as I drove Caroline home, her hand warm in mine.
Vicki. He'll go back to Vicki.
She was still vulnerable. Still confused. Still bearing the psychic wounds of his compulsion. And Damon Salvatore didn't like to lose.
I dropped Caroline at her house with a promise to call later, then headed home with my heart pounding.
The war wasn't over. It was just beginning.
And Damon Salvatore had just figured out that someone was fighting back.
