Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: The Public Showdown

The annual Zenith Group charity banquet was the kind of event that decided reputations.

Powerful investors, media executives, socialites, and corporate elites filled the grand hall, crystal chandeliers reflecting wealth and influence. This was where alliances were formed, enemies were crushed, and names were remembered or erased.

And tonight, I was here to be remembered.

I stepped into the hall wearing a fitted black gown, elegant yet sharp, my hair pulled back in a sleek style that emphasized confidence rather than softness. Every step I took felt deliberate, calculated. Whispers followed me like a wave.

"That's her…"

"Isn't she the one Aaron abandoned?"

"I heard she's rising fast in the industry…"

Good. Let them talk.

Across the room, I saw them.

Aaron stood beside Lina, his arm stiff around her waist. She looked pale in her white dress, the image of a fragile, dying girl she loved to portray. But I knew better now. I had seen her lies, her schemes, her greed.

And tonight, the mask would crack.

My ally appeared at my side, tall and composed, his presence grounding me. "Remember," he murmured, leaning slightly closer, "you don't attack emotionally. You attack strategically."

I nodded. "I'm ready."

The host took the stage, announcing the highlight of the night a major investment partnership presentation. The screen behind him lit up with company data.

This was Lina's moment. Or so she thought.

She stepped onto the stage, smiling weakly, her voice trembling as she began. "This project represents transparency, trust, and ethical leadership…"

I almost laughed.

As her presentation progressed, I watched the investors' expressions subtly change. Confusion. Doubt. Unease.

Then it happened.

A senior executive interrupted sharply. "Miss Lina, can you explain why these financial projections don't match the audited reports submitted last quarter?"

The room fell silent.

Lina froze. Her fingers tightened around the microphone. "I—I'm not sure what you mean…"

I stepped forward before she could recover.

"Allow me," I said calmly, my voice carrying clearly across the hall.

All eyes turned to me.

I walked toward the stage, heels echoing like a countdown. "The data Lina is presenting was altered. The original files show inflated profits, hidden losses, and unauthorized transfers most of which lead back to accounts connected to her personal trust."

Gasps erupted.

Aaron turned sharply toward Lina. "What is she talking about?"

Lina's face drained of color. "She's lying! She's jealous she's trying to sabotage me!"

I smiled faintly. "Then you won't mind an independent audit. Or perhaps the emails you sent instructing staff to manipulate the numbers?"

The screen behind us changed.

Emails.

Transaction records.

Time stamps.

Undeniable.

The room exploded into whispers. Cameras flashed. Investors stood up, furious.

"This is fraud!"

"We trusted your family!"

"Security!"

Lina stumbled back, shaking her head wildly. "No this isn't true! She framed me!"

I turned to the crowd, voice steady, merciless. "For years, I was treated as expendable. Looked down on. Betrayed by the people I trusted most. Tonight, I'm simply returning the truth."

Then I looked directly at Aaron.

"You chose her," I said softly. "You believed her. And you threw me away for this."

Aaron's face was ashen. His lips trembled. "I… I didn't know. I swear"

The crowd didn't care.

Security escorted Lina off the stage as she screamed my name, her image of a dying, innocent girl shattering completely.

Aaron took a step toward me, eyes filled with regret and panic. "Please… talk to me. I was wrong. I see it now."

I leaned closer, my words meant only for him.

"This is what regret looks like. And this is only the beginning."

I turned away as applause erupted not for Lina's fall, but for my composure, my courage, my dominance.

As my ally placed a protective hand at my back, guiding me through the stunned crowd, I felt it fully for the first time.

Power.

Not borrowed.

Not given.

Earned.

Behind me, my past burned.

Ahead of me, a new life waited.

And somewhere deep inside, a quiet truth stirred this revenge would cost me something.

But I was ready to pay the price.
