Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: Declaration of War

The Obsidian Hall erupted into pure chaos.

Shouts and growls echoed off the black stone walls as the thirteen Council members reacted to Xuěyáo's bold refusal and the passionate kiss that followed. Some rose from their thrones in outrage. Others watched with dark amusement. Crimson energy crackled in the air like gathering lightning.

Elder Vorath slammed his staff against the floor, sending a shockwave of oppressive power that silenced the hall.

"Enough!" he roared, his gaunt face twisted with fury. "This is an insult to every law we have upheld for millennia! A human dares speak of equality with one of the ancient blood? And you — Yè Júnhào — dare kiss her before this sacred Council as if she were your equal?"

Yè Júnhào released Xuěyáo from the kiss but kept her firmly tucked against his side, one arm banded possessively around her waist. His eyes blazed pure crimson, fangs fully extended, yet his voice remained dangerously calm.

"She *is* my equal," he declared, the words ringing through the hall like a challenge. "I have lived four hundred years in solitude and power, and in mere weeks she has given me more reason to exist than all those centuries combined. I will not renounce her. I will not harm her. And I will not bow to your fear of change."

Lady Seraphine laughed softly, the sound melodic yet sharp. "How deliciously romantic. The lone wolf has finally found his mate. Tell me, little human — do you truly believe you can stand beside him when the old laws demand otherwise?"

Xuěyáo lifted her chin, blue eyes steady despite the pounding of her heart. The power from his blood still hummed warmly in her veins, giving her strength.

"I do not claim to be a vampire," she said clearly. "But I am no longer mere prey. I have fought beside him. I have bled for him. And I love him. If your laws cannot accept that, then perhaps your laws are the ones that need to change."

A stunned hush fell over the Council.

The hulking Council member with jagged scars slammed his fist on his throne. "Insolence! She should be drained and studied!"

The Twin Shadows leaned toward each other, whispering in perfect unison, "She binds him… but she also frees him. Interesting."

Elder Vorath's face darkened to a dangerous shade. "You have failed the second test and defied the third. By all rights, the human should become Council property, and you, Lord Júnhào, should be stripped of your estate and title."

He paused, letting the threat hang heavy in the air.

"However… the Council is not unanimous."

Lady Seraphine smiled sweetly. "I vote to allow the bond — under strict observation, of course. A bonded pair like this could prove… useful."

Two other elders nodded in reluctant agreement, while the rest glared with open hostility.

Vorath's eyes narrowed to slits. "Very well. A compromise, then. The human will remain with you for now, Yè Júnhào. But she must undergo the Rite of Binding at midnight tomorrow. If the bond proves unstable or dangerous to our kind, she will be taken and you will face exile."

He pointed a bony finger at them both.

"Until then, you are both confined to the guest quarters. Any attempt to leave the Spire without permission will be considered treason."

The massive doors of the Obsidian Hall swung open with a resonant boom.

Yè Júnhào bowed his head slightly — the bare minimum of respect — before guiding Xuěyáo out of the hall, his arm never leaving her waist.

The moment the doors closed behind them and they were alone in the long crimson corridor, he pulled her into a shadowed alcove and crushed her against him in a fierce, desperate kiss. His hands trembled as they cupped her face.

"You were incredible," he breathed against her lips, voice raw. "Defying the entire Council… declaring your love so openly. I have never been more proud — or more terrified for you."

Xuěyáo kissed him back just as fiercely, fingers threading through his black hair. "I meant every word. I will not let them tear us apart."

He rested his forehead against hers, eyes closed. "The Rite of Binding tomorrow night… it is an ancient and dangerous ritual. It will test the strength of our bond by forcing our essences to intertwine. If it succeeds, they cannot easily separate us. If it fails…"

He didn't finish the sentence.

Xuěyáo cupped his cheek, her touch warm against his cool skin. "Then we make sure it succeeds. Together."

They returned to their warded guest quarters in silence, the weight of the Council's judgment pressing down on them.

Once inside, Yè Júnhào sealed the doors with fresh layers of crimson wards. Then he turned to her, pulling her into his arms once more.

"Tonight," he whispered, voice low and intimate, "we prepare. I will teach you the incantations and mental defenses needed for the Rite. And then…"

His eyes darkened with hunger and love.

"Then I will hold you until midnight. Because no matter what tomorrow brings, you are already mine — and I am already yours."

As the candles flickered in their chambers, the Crimson Spire buzzed with whispers and schemes.

The Council was divided.

The Shadowfang Clan watched from the shadows.

And in the heart of it all, a human woman and her ancient vampire lover prepared to face the most dangerous ritual of their lives.

The war for their love had truly begun.
