Chapter 61 - Hunger

Everything was still. My breath. My heart. 

There was a strange, hollow silence in my chest where there should be a pulse. For a moment my eyes remained closed despite my attempt to open them.

It felt like they'd been glued close.

Then—

They suddenly snapped open and everything filtered in at once.

The buzz of an insect flying outside the window. The drip from the faucet in the bathroom. It was like all my senses had been magnified.

I could see down to the dust particles that were on the floor. It was only a minute when a certain hunger engulfed me.

My throat was dry, scratching against its soft walls like sandpaper.

I needed something, I just didn't know what it was.

The door creaked open, the sound sharp against my sensitive ears. 

It was Ms. Duval. She was carrying a stainless flash, the scent of the contents immediately hitting me in the gut.

Whatever it was smelt metallic and a bit revolting.

"I didn't think you'd wake up early."
