Chapter 50 - don’t give up on me

My first instinct was to rush to her and make sure she didn't fall off the cliff. But—I'd promised to stay away.

That tiny second of hesitation cost me a lot because she was already falling, unable to hold her wait on the slippery ground. 

More than breaking the promise of leaving her alone, I wouldn't be able to bear the guilt of her dying because I'd acted a tad too slow.

It all happened in slow motion. 

Me, putting one leg before the other because I couldn't bear to stand on the side and watch her plummet to her death, and Ms. Coraline who was already grabbing her by the waist and pulling her back in.

Mary looked pretty shaken when she finally gained ground, her eyes immediately flickering to where I stood, hands now in pocket. 

I could see the look of betrayal on her face, that accusation, that I had stood by and watched as she almost fell to her death. It made something in my chest twist painfully, almost bringing me to my knees.
