Chapter 1 - Faye

Beep! beep! beep!

A lanky boy with dark brown hair and hazel eyes was woke up by the alarm

" I hate my life", he groaned

It's been four year since he was graduated from the orphanage and they had not been fkind to say the least. It seemed that everyone there wanted him gone as much as he wanted to leave and now he is in a cheap one bedroom apartment with no bathroom and a sink next to his bed. He didn't have a window, the rent would have been twice as much if he did.

" Way better then that hellhole"

At least he didn't get sold off like the last kid, that was a tragic day.

" Student number 1427 please proceed to the plaza, tardyness will not be tolerated" a voice on his holowatch exclaimed.

" Yeah yeah, I'm going now "

Lafayette slowly got out of his bed and went to the washing room in the public bathroom quickly getting into the sanitation tube, after all only the rich own a real bath. Once he was clean he grabbed his mirror to brush his hair. Looking at his languid expression he spoke

" Today will be better than yesterday "

With the end of my morning routine I got dressed in my school uniform, grabbed my bag and left for the learning plaza. Today was the seventh day of the seventh month of the 58th century under the Pantheon Suzerainty. Humanity's sole nation united under the immortal sovereign. Today was also the mirage of choice.

The mirage of choice was a event that happens when someone becomes fourteen, it defines their whole future. They will be sent to a government building called the learning plaza and have their DNA scanned. This will then chose that person's career. A person's chosen carrer isn't guaranteed but it is the most likely job they will have.

And now it's my turn to head there. Everyone at the school already believe they know what career they'll be chosen to have but I still haven't decided.

My classmates believe I will be a trash sorter, they say is only right if I work will family. It wasn't a funny joke and the worst part is I think some of them weren't. But just like everyone else, I want to be a Ascendent. They are modern day myths blessed with strength and speed beyond human limits and the sovereign himself takes away their lifetime so they'll never age again. They are the elites of his army and the backbone of the nation. They wield glaives, a marvel of human technology that changes shape at a ascended's thoughts and command. And last of all they are beautiful, all of them look like super models and they stand at a whopping nine feet. It has something to do with the ascension process ridding the body of impurities and when that process is finished each Ascendent is given the title of lucent. They are the paragons of humanity and I wanted to be one.

He continued down the road and headed to the monorail watching hovercraft pass in the sky. Humming as he walk down the hill of his neighborhood there was a small pop that caught his attention then there was a loud ringing in his ears. Wincing in pain he frantically look in different directions to figure out what was happening. And then he sees a women appear from nothing in the alley next to him.

"W-what?" He stammered, a otherworldly beautiful woman was leaning against a trash bin. The only way he could describe her was white. Her skin was a unnatural pale ivory like the keys of a piano. Her waist length hair was so white it seemed to be glowing and her eyes, her irises were a black that no light seemed to reach but her pupils was white like the rest of her. The sight was enchanting almost ethereal if not for the pool of blood staining her white dress and the floor below her.

" She's hurt..." the moment I spoke her eyes focused on me and I felt a tingle down my spine, a cold sweat ran down my back. Her eyes so devoid of emotion gave me a sense of dread I've never known.

" Quis es?" She spoke in a language I've never heard before and yet I could understand her. Who are you she had said.

" Si mori non vis, mihi responde "

The threat made my blood run cold

If you do not wish to die answer me rang in my head. I spoke as quickly as I could

" I'm Lafayette, a student at Northridge middle school"

She seemed to relax a little after that but she still seemed tense. " Quis est iste locus? "

Where is this place. " This place? " She seemed frustrated at my question. She attempted to stand but stumbled and fell to the ground. I tried to help her up but as I got close she outstretched her hand closed to my neck. The movement was faster than I could see. The air vibrated around her hand. I froze in place, none of us moved for a minute straight until I found the courage to speak again

" I want to help you, that's all I whas trying to do."

"Why" her look of distrust hadn't left her face. I spoke again. " you don't see people bleeding out in a alley everyday."

"Let me help patch you up and I'll answer all the questions you want". She stared at me for a while not saying anything, she looked at her wound then back at me.

"Bene, sed momento quo aliquid conaris, morieris" fine, but the moment you try something you die.

I smile and take a step back fearfully. "Im glad we could come to a agreement"
